"No yacht should attempt the rhumb line course without considerable range under power. Carry all possible fuel and water." This is stated in the Pilot book, and we can confirm that it's true. Small boat crossing the Atlantic Ocean in calm weather and strong winds. Helping another yacht in need of fuel in the middle of the Atlantic. Sailing from Antigua in the West Indies, to Horta, Faial, Azores. Joined by Dolphins and Whales. The yacht is a Comfortina 32, made in Sweden for coastal cruising and racing. This boat, with it's fin keel, spade rudder and 7/8 fractional rig was never build for crossing an ocean. Only problem was that we were young and unexperienced, so we did not know. Luckily we survived and came home to tell the story. I told the story in several Norwegian sailing magazines and I also wrote two books about this voyage. Some years after our trip, Youtube was launched. Now, 22 years after the last ocean crossing I have got time to edit and publish on youtube. The playlist of Thule sailing around the Atlantic is soon over, and this episode is showing our sailing back across the ocean from the Caribbean to Europe. Small boat, shorthanded and with a small child. No worries. In this episode of Thule's adventures in 2003 you will experience both Barbados and Tobago. These are beautiful islands that many people don't get to visit. If you sail the ARC you will often not get to these islands. On our voyage we sailed from the Canaries directly to Barbados. After a few weeks there we sailed on to Tobago. After Tobago we sailed to Grenada, but that's in the next episode. As in this entire series, there are some important clips missing, and the video quality is not what it is today. This is back in 2003, 2 years before Youtube was launched. When we filmed this it was to send video cassettes back to Norway, so that those back home could follow our adventures. Now, over 20 years later, we have edited them to a format suitable for Youtube. Small boat (32 foot) crossing the Atlantic Ocean with a limited crew. The Comfortina 32 sailboat was never made for crossing an ocean, but we did not understand that at that time. We were young and naive and we just set off in the boat we had. Crossing the Atlantic westbound with a small sailboat shorthanded was easy, scary, exciting, demanding, frustrating and fun. And what did we learn? Go small, go simple and go now. You will never miss one more day at work! On our crossing we had more days with calm that we had with gale force. We wished for more wind on half our passage, but in retrospect it was better to have less wind than too much wind.

In this episode, we finish provisioning in Darwin and set sail on our first major passage towards Cairns! After weeks of prep, it’s finally time to leave and embrace life on the ocean. We share past experiences with diesel bugs and how they caused engine failure. We plan to make a few improvements to ensure greater boat safety. These adjustments include a new fuel filter, purification, and polishing system. Looking to create a safer, more reliable fuel system for your boat? In this video, I share my plan to upgrade the fuel system on my boat for increased safety and reliability. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or just starting out, these changes could save you from a lot of headaches (and potential disasters) when you're out at sea. Nauticat 38 What You’ll Learn in This Video: 🚤 My Current Setup: I explain the existing fuel system on my boat, which includes one engine, two fuel tanks, and a single filter. While it works, I’ve faced challenges like diesel bugs and cross-contamination, which can lead to engine failure when you least expect it. 🛠 The Problems: I outline the critical issues with my current system—like the risk of filter clogs shutting down the engine and the complications caused by fuel return lines feeding into the wrong tank. 💡 The Upgrade Plan: I walk you through my new design, featuring separate filters for each tank, dual selector valves for both fuel supply and return lines, and how these changes will make my system more secure and flexible. Why This Matters: Out at sea, a reliable fuel system is not just about convenience—it’s about safety. If a single clogged filter can leave you stranded, it’s worth investing the time and effort to upgrade your setup. My new plan ensures that if one tank or filter fails, the other remains fully operational, keeping my engine running smoothly. Fue diseñada para la pesca de bacalao y formó parte de la famosa Flota Blanca portuguesa. En 1993, el barco fue parcialmente demolido, pero el casco se conservó. En 2007, la empresa portuguesa Pascoal e filhos se convirtió en dueña del casco y comenzó su restauración, que culminó con su lanzamiento en mayo de 2010.
