Ocean Club hosted another superb event for owners, partners and friends aboard the 101-foot Gulf Craft charter yacht, Bluestone for the final day of the 2026 KPMG Sydney Sail Grand Prix on glorious Sydney Harbour. Guests watched in awe as the 11 F50 foiling catamarans battled each other and the elements. The US team defeated Spain's Los Gallos and reigning Rolex SailGP Champions Emirates GBR in a tense showdown in tricky conditions.
Day 3 of the JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff World Championship, presented by The Winning Group, was a frustrating one for all teams, officials and spectators as a lack of wind reduced the planned racing from two races to just a single two-lap windward-leeward Race 3 on Sydney Harbour today. The day’s racing started on time in very light wind and it was the series leader Yandoo which held a narrow lead over New Zealand's Shaw and Partners Financial Services at the end of the first lap when the breeze died and the race officer abandoned the race. There was a break of more than 45 minutes while the fleet waited to hopefully get a race started, then finally a decision was made to stage Race 3. While the wind was still light throughout the two-lap race, the racing was tight at the head of the fleet. The Smeg crew of Ash Rooklyn, Josh Porebski and Niall Morrow took an early lead after electing to go to the left hand side of the course and led narrowly at each rounding mark before finally taking a narrow 4s victory. The Kitchen Maker crew (Lachlan Steel, George Morton and Jerome Watts) pushed Smeg to the limit and almost grabbed a last minute win after the two leading teams staged a spinnaker-gybing match race over the final leg of the course. Another great battle was going on behind Smeg and The Kitchen Maker duel. Two New Zealand teams, ASCC (Campbell Stanton, Ollie Gilmore and Pat Morgan) and Shaw and Partners Financial Services-NZ (Eli Liefting, Sam Street and Josh Schon) were having a similar gybing duel right to the finish line before ASCC finally won the day narrowly from her Kiwi team mate, finishing third 52s behind The Kitchen Maker. Keagan York’s Shaw and Partners Financial Services-Australia finished in fifth place, ahead of Lazarus Capital Partners (Tom Cunich), Yandoo (John Winning Jr), Germany’s Black Knight (Heinrich von Bayern), Rag & Famish Hotel (Ben Crafoord) and Club Marine (Emma Rankin). Due to the delayed start and lack of breeze the scheduled Race 4 was not sailed today and the scoreboard after the races doesn’t accurately show the overall position as a number of the leading teams are already carrying results they would expect to discard later. The total scores from all three races have defending champion Yandoo ahead on 9 points, followed by Shaw and Partners Financial Services-Australia in second place on 11 points, Rag & Famish Hotel on 18, Queensland’s GC Sails (Scott Cunningham) on 22, Smeg on 27 and the Australian champion Balmain (Henry Larkings) on 28 points. As predicted, the two-lap windward-leeward races in light wind usually produce unpredictable results and today’s Race 3 was no exception. Smeg’s crew showed in the Invitation Race prior to the start of the championship that their boat was quick in these conditions and their crew work was outstanding as they grabbed the early lead with good tactics. Smeg led ASCC by 18s at the first weather mark, followed by the Kitchen Maker, Shaw and Partners-Australia, Black Knight, Lazarus, Rag & Famish, Shaw and Partners-NZ, Balmain, Sixt (Jacob Marks), Club Marine, Berlin Bears (Philipp Nocke, Germany) and Yandoo, which was 1m20s behind the leader. At the bottom mark, Smeg retained her 18s advantage over the fleet but it was now The Kitchen Maker that was throwing out the challenge as the pair set off for the final weather mark. There was less than 10s between the two leaders as they set spinnakers for the run to the finish and it was a great race over the final leg to give Smeg her 4s victory. The overall positions should become a little clearer after tomorrow’s races (scheduled Races 5 and 6) but the most accurate position won’t occur until after Thursday’s Race 7. The Host Club, Australian 18 Footers League’s spectator ferry will follow all races and ferry tickets may be purchased via this link Buy Ferry Tickets SailMedia will livestream all the action from the course, along with expert commentary and iewing of the coverage of Races 5 and 6 will be available on youtube.com/video/8nk8PkikIIQ/livestreaming Visit www.18footers.com for the very best in 18 foot skiff racing from Sydney Harbour and beyonds

Today was kind of a big day for me. It was the first time on this trip that I hoisted the spinnaker with proper wind… and more importantly, the first time I took it down again while the wind was still there. I’ve been nervous about this for a while. I’ve had some messy situations with spinnakers before, and doing it alone out here felt like one of those things that could easily get complicated if it went wrong. But I also knew I couldn’t avoid it forever. At some point I had to just do it. So today I did. The sailing itself wasn’t perfect. To keep the spinnaker filled I had to go quite a bit off course, so from a “making miles west” perspective it wasn’t ideal. But honestly, that wasn’t the point today. The point was simply putting it up and bringing it down safely by myself. And it actually went pretty smoothly. When the sail was packed away again and everything was under control, I had this huge wave of relief and pride. It’s funny because for some people this might feel like the smallest thing in the world. But for me it was something I had been afraid of doing alone. And today I faced it. I did it. And I’m proud of that. The rest of the day was nice and simple. I did some boat chores, tidied things up, and finally made ice cream, which I’ve been craving for days. That alone made the day feel like a small luxury out here. Good food, a clean boat, steady sailing… and starting the morning by doing something that scared me. That was definitely the highlight of the day. 🌊⛵️ ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. It's time to head south if I want to avoid the worst of winter's wrath. I have to tack all the way out from Quahog Bay against the standard southwest wind, but once past Round Rock, I'm off toward Cape Cod. Except that the latest GRIB's are showing serious thunderstorm activity down south, so I delay my departure one day. Epic Navigator Docking in Serifos is rarely simple. Strong gusts, limited space and unpredictable harbor conditions often turn a normal arrival into a serious skipper decision. Learn more about the Mediterranean Masterclass: https://epicnavigator.com/training/mediterranean-masterclass/ Epic Navigator Offshore Sailing Training info@epicnavigator.com WhatsApp: +30 6948 188 226 This video documents the approach and docking in the port of Serifos, one of the Cyclades harbors where wind, space and timing can quickly turn a maneuver into a challenge. The episode is part of a new sailing series that follows the planning and execution of a real passage: • Departure from Alimos Marina (Athens) • Passage planning toward the Cyclades • Harbor approach strategy and timing • Managing Meltemi wind effects and local gusts • Real skipper decision-making under pressure The Cyclades are not simple cruising waters. Strong Meltemi winds, acceleration zones and exposed harbors require proper preparation and operational judgment. This is exactly the type of seamanship developed in the Mediterranean Masterclass, where experienced sailors learn how to: • Plan passages in demanding wind systems • Evaluate harbor risks before arrival • Manage Cyclades wind acceleration zones • Make confident skipper-level decisions at sea The goal is not simply to sail — but to operate safely and confidently as skipper in complex environments.

But once you’re actually offshore, the goal is clarity over features. In this fifth and final video of our 5-part intensive, we’re looking at the offshore app itself—how it behaves when bandwidth is limited and how to stay oriented when you’re tired. We dive into the practical reality of modern offshore sailing, where tools like Starlink are becoming the norm, but smart data management is still the key to staying calm. This isn't about replacing your judgment; it’s about using smarter delivery to buy yourself the time to make better decisions. ⚓️ WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN VIDEO #5: We are moving from theoretical routing into the actual interface you’ll use at sea. This session covers: * Bandwidth vs. Clarity: Why offshore clarity matters more than having every feature active, and how to focus only on what matters. * Smart Data Delivery: How PredictWind sends a filtered "slice" of data to your offshore app so you aren't overwhelmed or waiting hours for a download. * The Planning Horizon: Understanding why 300 nautical miles is the right distance for making your next tactical decisions. * Starlink & Big Picture Awareness: How high-speed data is changing what is "normal" for sailors while still requiring bandwidth discipline. * Reducing Reactive Decisions: Using these tools to stay calm, predictable, and oriented even when the environment gets difficult. * The Support of Seamanship: A final look at how these tools support your role as Captain without replacing your ultimate responsibility. 📽️ THE PREDICTWIND MASTERCLASS SERIES: * Video 1: The Foundation & Setuphttps://youtu.be/JTJTCXnd8e0 * Video 2: Weather Routing & Interpretationhttps://youtu.be/S1DvOBNulFU * Video 3: Power Routing for Comforthttps://youtu.be/QTrIFfbL6VY * Video 4: Safety, AIS & Extra Featureshttps://youtu.be/C5zBfqqwDMM * Video 5: The Offshore App & Starlink Integration (You are here) https://youtu.be/81_mxAID6t0

Ben Soofer joined 59 North back in 2018, working with media and on the backend of this very podcast. He then started sailing as a mate, including joining August on his first offshore passage on Isbjørn. He’s then gone on to start his own business, and working with many others. August caught up with him to reminisce about the past, share some old sea stories, and talk about how Ben’s made a unique career out of his passion. -- Support the podcast & become a member of The Quarterdeck, where Andy, August & Mia dive deep on the art of seam'nship. Nerd out with us on our members-only forum and talk boats, gear, safety-at-sea, meet like-minded sailors, find crew, and more. Check it out on quarterdeck.59-north.com. See you there! -- This season of ON THE WIND is supported by our friends at Offshore Passage Opportunities and Rutgerson Marin. Support the show by supporting our sponsors!
After more than 1000 nautical miles across the Indian Ocean, we finally arrived in the Seychelles — waking up to towering green mountains after months of sailing through the low coral atolls of the Maldives and Chagos. But as every cruiser knows… days don’t always go to plan. Before we could properly explore the island, our generator decided to cause some trouble, forcing a quick repair and a reminder that flexibility is part of life at sea. Once things were running again we were finally able to get out and experience some island life in the Seychelles — including something a little unexpected… With the kids getting older it felt like the perfect opportunity for a new milestone: driving lessons. Meanwhile, Finn had his own adventure ahead when he joined a local sport fishing tournament, heading out before midnight to see what the Indian Ocean had in store. Life certainly didn’t slow down when we arrived in the Seychelles. 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! We’re the Fothergills – a family of six living full-time aboard our catamaran, Happy Days.
