We have been sailing our Leopard catamaran for six years, crossing oceans and really putting down the miles on our boat. We spent a long time choosing this model and there are a number of reasons why we are super happy with our choice, but after 6 years of hard sailing, and a recent rough ocean passage from New Zealand to Fiji, we had a major failure while we were offshore. We were forced to drop anchor at a submerged reef so that we could temporarily make our boat safe to continue sailing a further 500 miles to reach land where we could begin the repairs. In this video, we tackle our first bot job since arriving in Fiji, and we're just hoping that the damage isn't too severe - with this structural failure we could lost thousands of dollars in broken or lost items, before we even began the repairs themselves. We leave Støtt for another beautiful stretch of sailing along Norway’s Helgeland coast — but even a light-looking wind gives us an immediate lesson in not fighting the elements. Our route takes us via the anchorages at Gåsvær to Ørnes, before continuing the following day via Tukhuset Gjestehavn to the small island of Bolga. Along the way we encounter gusty winds funneling out from the Norwegian mountains, spectacular spring scenery and one of the warmest days we’ve experienced this far north. Getting away from the pontoon at Støtt doesn’t quite go according to plan. With around 10 knots of wind from behind, our intended spring manoeuvre simply pushes the floating pontoon along the wall rather than bringing Polaris’ bow out. Time for a change of plan: swap the springs, leave stern-first and let the wind help rather than fight it. After sailing via Gåsvær, we reach Ørnes for the night. Kathrin heads ashore for a hike while I take advantage of the stop to give Polaris some much-needed attention and clean the boat. The next morning brings an extraordinary change in the weather. With sunshine, blue skies and temperatures around 16–17°C, northern Norway suddenly feels almost like summer. We leave Ørnes, call at Tukhuset Gjestehavn and continue towards Bolga. Once ashore on Bolga, the adventure continues on foot. We explore the remarkable crack through the mountain, tackle ropes and scrambling along the route, enjoy spectacular views over white beaches and clear water — and even brave a very quick swim despite the sea being only around 6°C. And our timing couldn’t be better. It’s 17 May, Norway’s Constitution Day, and even on an island of only around 100 inhabitants the Norwegian flags are flying and celebrations are underway. Real nasty...yep, that was Isabella’s deck before washing. Now it’s sparkling clean after a good scrubbing. Burmese teak is getting harder and harder to find these days and luckily we happen to have a piece onboard. Steve uses a hole saw bit to cut a base for our new Garmin weather antenna. The wood is so tough that it broke the drill bit. Karen keeps her fingers crossed as the drill continues to kick and cut; hoping that it doesn’t slice any part of Steve as it bores through the wood. The drilling made a nice base and some teak dust that we collected for later use. After applying polyurethane and connecting the antenna base with silicone we attached it in the cockpit where the antenna has a clear view of the sky. It’s now ready for action. Hooray!!!! We are putting in a helm chair. The Tempress ProBax will make our cruise from Georgia to Texas so much more comfortable. It’s orthopedic, it swivels, it’s attractive, it has a removable support pole and we are really looking forward to this addition to Isabella. The cockpit floor will also have some upgrades. Stay tuned for some fun DIY in the very near future. Many thanks to those of you who gave us the secret to solving the jigsaw puzzle. The letters printed on the back of the pieces will be a huge help when we start to put together all those blue pieces for the sky. We are on S/V Isabella a Super Mikado 56 manufactured in France by C.N.S.O. (Constructions Nautiques du Sud-Ouest). Isabella is a sailing ketch and is considered a 1990/2010 model. It has four private cabins, an engine room, salon, galley, and three heads with two separate shower stalls. The hull is fiberglass and is considered a bluewater cruiser. Isabella has an excellent capsize ratio of 1.68 and a very good comfort ratio of 42.19. She is equipped with Garmin / Raymarine electronics and has hydraulic steering. The naval architect was Michel Bigoin who also designed the largest sailboat in the world which was manufactured in 1976 and called Phocea. It was a 246 foot four masted steel schooner and was considered the largest private sailing yacht in the world until 2004. One last adventure at Grande Anse, one of the most beautiful beaches we’ve found in Guadeloupe before making the short hop to Deshaies. There we enjoy some delicious local treats and cool off with a swim in the river. Then it’s time to keep sailing south along the coast of Guadeloupe. How much can you really save by importing boat equipment directly from China? For our refit of ROAM, we decided to look beyond traditional marine suppliers and source a number of major components directly from Chinese manufacturers. The results were far more significant than we expected. For the specific products discussed in this video, we spent approximately $50,000 on equipment that would have cost roughly $150,000 through the U.S. sources we compared, representing more than $92,000 in savings. But saving money wasn’t the only consideration. In this episode, we break down exactly what we bought, what we paid, what comparable equipment cost in the U.S., and—perhaps most importantly—what it actually took to source these products ourselves. We discuss: 🛶 Our custom dinghy — including the specifications and customizations that made a direct-from-the-manufacturer purchase possible. 🔋 Our lithium battery cells — the foundation of our massive DIY house battery bank and one of the biggest opportunities for savings. ❄️ Air conditioning systems — including the challenges of comparing different BTU capacities and configurations when an exact like-for-like product isn’t available. ⚓ Windlass — comparing the equipment itself as well as the challenges of finding the correct marine hardware. 🔩 Custom turnbuckles — including one of the biggest lessons we learned about buying from overseas: getting exactly what you need can take time, patience, and very detailed specifications. 💡 Marine lighting — comparing quality, specifications, and pricing. ⚡ Electrical connectors and components — another category where buying directly from the manufacturer can produce substantial savings. We also talk honestly about the tradeoff between money and time. Buying directly from China isn’t as simple as clicking “buy.” You have to find manufacturers, communicate specifications, compare products, verify quality, understand certifications and materials, negotiate pricing, arrange shipping, and sometimes wait much longer than you would for something sitting on a U.S. dealer’s shelf. And when something goes wrong, returning it isn’t as easy as taking it back to the local marine supply store. So was it worth it? For us, absolutely—but there were some important caveats. One of the biggest misconceptions we want to address is the idea that “Made in China” automatically means cheap or poor quality. China manufactures everything from inexpensive consumer products to extremely sophisticated, high-quality industrial and marine equipment. The country of manufacture tells you very little about the quality by itself. The real challenge is finding the right manufacturer, the right product, and the right quality level. For everything we discuss in this video, quality was a major priority. We weren’t looking for the cheapest possible option. We were looking for equipment that met our specifications and was comparable to—or in several cases better than—the alternatives we found through U.S. suppliers. If you’re planning a sailboat refit, building a catamaran, outfitting a cruising boat, or simply wondering whether importing directly from China is actually worth it, this episode gives you the numbers and the real-world experience behind our decisions. Depois da adrenalina de conseguir entrar com segurança, deixamos o Veleiro Cabana para trás e embarcamos em uma aventura completamente diferente. Nosso destino? Chapelco, na Argentina, para uma semana de muito ski, neve e paisagens incríveis nas montanhas da Patagônia. Foram dias maravilhosos, conhecendo as pistas de Chapelco, encarando as aventuras no ski, aproveitando a neve e também explorando a gastronomia, os restaurantes e o hotel onde ficamos hospedados. Só que a barra da foz não tem carta náutica atualizada, o fundo muda de lugar sozinho, o meu veleiro tem 2 metros de calado — e quem me tirou dali não foi o meu GPS. Foi um pescador que lê o formato das ondas. No ponto mais raso, sobraram 70 centímetros de água entre a minha quilha e a areia. Neste episódio eu preparo o Balanço para o mar aberto: limpo o casco depois de dois meses em água doce, encaro as plantas que engancham na âncora desde que as represas deixaram a água mais transparente, desço até a foz do Velho Chico e cruzo a barra guiada pelo Chumbinho, pescador que conhece aquela areia desde criança. Eu tenho dois GPS, sonar independente na rede NMEA e o track da minha entrada gravado no celular. Montei essa redundância toda justamente para nunca ficar sem instrumento navegando sozinho. E na hora H, o Chumbinho seguiu por um canal completamente diferente daquele por onde eu tinha entrado. Eu gelei. Desacelerei, pensei de novo, e decidi confiar em quem tem o conhecimento que nenhum equipamento dá. Do outro lado: água salgada de novo, mar aberto, uma travessia solo de quase 13 horas e a chegada em Maceió pouco antes da meia-noite — uma cidade que eu nunca tinha pisado, ali embalada pra presente. É um episódio sobre saber a hora de ir, sobre confiar em quem sabe mais do que você, e sobre uma coisa que nove anos morando a bordo me ensinaram: com a natureza a gente aprende a dançar junto, não a bater de frente.
