We live aboard our 80-foot sailboat year-round in Alaska, and one of the things we love about this life is the people and places we stumble into along the way. After helping Sterling and Aaron of Second Growth Homes raise an A-frame in Southeast Alaska, we were invited out to the logging and milling operation Sterling runs alongside his dad, Gordon, near Tenakee Springs. And Gordon has a story. He spent nearly 50 years as a builder before moving to Tenakee 26 years ago. After years of bringing lumber north from Washington and Oregon, he started questioning why they were importing wood while living in the middle of one of the greatest timber-producing regions in the world. He bought an old sawmill, eventually moved into logging and milling, and today he and Sterling work together harvesting and milling local Southeast Alaska timber. Their operation takes the process nearly from beginning to end. They selectively harvest timber through Forest Service timber sales, mill Sitka spruce and Alaska yellow cedar themselves, fill custom orders, and even built a barge and have a towboat to get lumber out to customers around Southeast Alaska. On the day we visited, they were in the middle of a large order of Alaska yellow cedar. With plenty of lumber left to mill, Scott got put to work learning Gordon's hydraulic Wood-Mizer while Sterling and the crew kept the Mobile Dimension mill running on the other side of the shed. For Scott, who has his own history with logging and sawmilling back on the Kenai Peninsula, it felt a little like finding a piece of home in another corner of Alaska. Living aboard isn't always about sailing. Sometimes it's about where the boat takes us, the people we meet when we get there, and the lives and stories we're lucky enough to step into for a little while. This is our second collaboration with Second Growth Homes, and really just an introduction to Sterling, Gordon and what they're building here in Southeast Alaska. I think this was the week the countdown stopped feeling like a countdown. For so long, the Golden Globe Race has been this thing I’ve been preparing for somewhere in the future. Fix the boat. Find the money. Do the courses. Buy the things. Fix the things I already fixed. 😂 And suddenly everyone is here. The marina is filling up with GGR boats, the other skippers are around, the official programme has started and my calendar seems to have something happening every five minutes. It’s a strange feeling because I still have SO much to do. But at the same time, I’m trying to remind myself that this is it. This is part of it too. These last few weeks surrounded by the people I’ll soon be sailing around the world with, all of us trying to get our boats and ourselves ready for what’s coming. And I actually want to enjoy it. Because very soon the marina, the people, the running around and all this noise will disappear. Then it’s just me and Showgirl. So yes, the to-do list is still terrifying. But this week I’m trying to look up from it every once in a while and realise... I made it here. It delivers a genuinely spacious cockpit and strong interior volume. It has one head down below in the saloon and in 2023 all of the toilet and waste hoses were replaced. Maintenance has been kept meticulously current. Fantastic Lady was hauled out and had the shaft bearing replaced, topsides polished, full antifoul and propspeed completed in April 2026. With a genuinely thorough maintenance history and a long list of recent upgrades already taken care of, Fantastic Lady is ready to be sailed away and enjoyed with confidence. We actually did it. We sold almost everything we own, said goodbye to our home, our cabin, our cars, our pets, our friends and the life our kids have always known… and boarded a plane to Florida to begin our new life sailing around the world. Tudo ia muito bem. Barco sendo preparado, prazo definido e uma travessia pela frente. Até aparecer aquilo que todo velejador sabe que, cedo ou tarde, vai acontecer: uma manutenção de emergência. O problema estava na bucha do pé de galinha do eixo do hélice. Uma peça que precisava ser substituída — e um serviço que, em condições normais, significaria uma coisa: tirar o barco da água. Só que, dessa vez, isso não era uma opção. Não havia tempo. A logística não permitia. E a data da travessia estava chegando. Então surgiu a pergunta que acabou virando este episódio: Será que dá para trocar a bucha com o barco dentro d’água? Para tentar fazer isso, precisei imaginar uma solução, desenhar e fabricar uma ferramenta específica para retirar a bucha debaixo d’água, sem precisar levar o Don Thomaz II para o seco. E é aí que uma simples manutenção vira engenharia improvisada, tentativa, erro e solução. It took us two years to get out of the Mediterranean. This is the day we finally did it. We slipped the mooring at 7:26 in the morning and pointed at Punta de Europa — the corner where the Mediterranean stops and the Atlantic starts. Between us and it: an entire day of motoring in nine metres of water, hugging the coast, because the closest thing there is to a defence against the orcas is staying in water too shallow for them to work in. That's why the route looks insane on the chartplotter. The straight line to Gibraltar would have been quicker. It also would have taken us across a stretch with attack reports in 2023, 2024 and 2025. So we went the long way round, in and out of every bay, dodging an absurd amount of unlit fishing gear that only the radar could see. Then the Rock came up out of the haze, and about an hour later we went past it and out — England on one side, Africa on the other, close enough to be strange. Next week we start up the Atlantic coast toward Lisbon, which is the part everyone warned us about. A prua troviamo un'altra grande area dedicata al relax, con divanetto e prendisole, utilizzabile anche durante la navigazione. Il concetto alla base del GT50 è chiaro: offrire grandi spazi all'aperto senza rinunciare al comfort degli interni. Uno degli elementi più interessanti è il tetto apribile, che insieme alle grandi aperture trasforma la zona giorno regalando una sensazione molto simile a quella di un'imbarcazione open. La cucina è posizionata al centro della vita di bordo e permette di servire comodamente sia gli ospiti sia il comandante. La plancia di comando del Gran Turismo 50 mantiene un'impostazione sportiva e tecnologica, con tre display dedicati a navigazione, cartografia e controllo dei principali sistemi di bordo, compresi flap automatici e Seakeeper. La postazione di guida è a dritta e dispone di un'ampia seduta che consente di condividere la navigazione con gli altri ospiti. La cabina VIP offre spazi generosi e può essere configurata con letti separati oppure con un grande letto matrimoniale. Beneteau Gran Turismo 50: prova in mare, velocità e consumi Dopo aver analizzato gli spazi arriva il momento più importante: il test drive del Beneteau Gran Turismo 50. Nel test abbiamo rilevato, a circa 19-20 nodi, un consumo indicato di circa 112 litri/ora, equivalente a circa 5,9 litri per miglio nautico. Abbiamo provato anche l'accelerazione: partendo dal minimo e dando piena potenza, il Gran Turismo 50 entra in planata in circa 5 secondi. Durante la prova abbiamo inoltre superato i 25 nodi, continuando a navigare con un elevato livello di comfort a bordo. Le spiaggette laterali abbattibili consentono di aumentare ulteriormente la superficie utilizzabile del pozzetto, mentre il Seakeeper contribuisce alla stabilità della barca quando si è fermi in mare.
