Hi everyone! Here's our next video of our time cruising Fiji in October of last year. People ask us all the time what our favorite part of crossing the Pacific was, or specifically what our favorite islands were. As much as we love French Polynesia and Tonga, we really think Fiji had a distinct remote atmosphere of people living like the old days off the grid. The islands are beautiful to look at, and the undersea coral and sea life was absolutely the best. Only a few episodes left will bring us to New Zealand and our touring there, and then the Pacific 2025 journey will come to an end. What a year! Solo sailing isn’t always smooth seas and heroic moments… and this trip proved it. I sailed out to Green Island and quickly learned just how tricky it can be to pick up a mooring buoy alone when the wind and current decide to argue with each other. After a few ego‑bruising attempts (and a couple of expletives), I finally got it sorted with some help — and walked away with some solid lessons for next time. From there, I headed out to Arlington Reef, anchored in a beautiful little lagoon, and speared myself a fresh feed of coral trout and crayfish. Sometimes you just need to slip away to a place where no one knows your name. For Toni and me, that place has become St. John’s Creek—tucked off St. Leonard Creek, tucked off the Patuxent River—a sanctuary within a sanctuary. It’s quiet, protected, and perfectly suited for kicking our feet up while the shoreline wildlife and the parade of birds overhead provide the entertainment. On our last visit, we discovered a tiny deserted beach, the kind that feels like it appears only for those who truly need it. It was too perfect not to return with a proper picnic. So we packed a basket with the good stuff, grabbed our beach chairs, loaded up the Miss Annemarie, and set off to create another moment in time. Our first course set the tone: delicate blinis crowned with caviar, caprese bites bursting with freshness, and blue cheese stuffed olives with just the right briny punch. The second course was a playful masterpiece—liver pâté topped with muenster, shielding a thin slice of kosher dill pickle from the almighty Mt. Olive, all resting on pumpernickel tea bread. For variety, we added crisp garden cucumbers atop a cream cheese–onion mixture, finished with fresh dill and tucked between slices of rye tea bread. Dessert was its own celebration: French éclairs, coconut wrapped macarons, and warm apple strudel. And because every great picnic deserves a flourish, we toasted it all with the finest pink champagne. Eventually, the radar nudged us back to reality. Thunderstorms were marching toward St. John’s Creek, so we returned to Moments in Time, packed up, and made our way back to Solomons. Once home, we weren’t quite ready to let the magic fade—so we grilled Asian infused sticky ginger scallion soft shell crabs for dinner. What a day. What a feast. What great Moments in Time. At the time, she was listed for $48,000. Today, she belongs to Save The Day Jay. And Jay didn't pay $48,000. He paid $15,000. There's a lesson in that: Don't ask, don't get. But there's another lesson that's every bit as important when buying an older sailboat: Know what you're buying—and know your own limits. Fortunately, Jay knows his way around boats. BoatFools viewers may recognize him as the guy who helped save our asses this spring when we were scrambling to get our boats ready for the charter season. Around here, he's become known as Save The Day Jay, and now he's taking on a much bigger project of his own. Jay is refitting Southern Cross 39 Hull #1 with plans to head south for the winter, and in this episode we're going back aboard to see what $15,000 bought him, what he's discovered, what he's fixing, and what it's really going to take to bring this classic bluewater cruiser back to life. The Southern Cross 39 was designed by renowned naval architect Thomas Gillmer, who also designed the Allied Seawind—the first fiberglass sailboat to circumnavigate the globe. Hull #1 was built by C.E. Ryder in Rhode Island in 1981 and, importantly, was factory finished; many Southern Cross sailboats were sold as kits for owner completion. Her construction was noteworthy for the era, with a closed-cell Airex-cored fiberglass hull, a technique C.E. Ryder became well known for, along with balsa-cored decks. When we first toured her three years ago, we saw a serious cruising boat with an impressive pedigree that needed work. Today, we're seeing what happens when the right buyer looks beyond the cosmetics, makes an offer—and then has the skills, time and determination to deal with what comes next. Because a $15,000 bluewater sailboat can be an incredible opportunity. It can also become a very expensive lesson if you don't understand what you're getting into. Don't ask, don't get. Two things have really changed the way we live at anchor this season. The first is our custom anchor alarm, which means we can both sleep easier at night. The second is the new shade over the bow. Together, they give us more comfort and peace of mind while living at anchor. When we arrived at the anchorage, Holly handled the windlass while I talked through how we set the anchor. We’ve also got the anchor alarm running on a split screen, so you can see it working in real time, including when the alarms go off. The anchor watch is a custom Home Assistant setup that takes GPS, depth, heading and wind data from Signal K. It calculates our swing radius using the amount of rode we’ve put out and the depth, then keeps an eye on the boat for any signs that we’re dragging. If the boat moves outside the area it should be in, both our phones get an alert and the onboard siren sounds, whether we’re awake, asleep, or simply not paying attention. The trampolines are great to sit on until about ten in the morning, and after that, nobody really wants to be up there baking in the sun. The shade has given us that space back for the rest of the day. We already had Sunrise trampolines and Sailor’s Pillows, so we knew the build quality before we started.
