► This 40th edition of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers brought the 32 multihulls we saw in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, safely to port after a beautiful 2,700-mile transatlantic crossing. We rejoin our fleet in Saint Lucia. ► To begin with, a presentation of the setting is in order! We are here in Saint Lucia, a small island in the Lesser Antilles, located between Martinique to the north and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to the south. Saint Lucia, in addition to having been a former French colony, then British, and finally an independent country since 1979, is the only state in the world to bear a woman’s name. This island, with its rugged terrain, covers an area of 620 km² and has a population of nearly 200,000 inhabitants. ► Exposed to the easterly trade winds, it is on the west coast that the best sheltered anchorages are found. Among them, one of the finest is undoubtedly Rodney Bay, at the very north of the island. This vast anchorage is further complemented by a lagoon, a true hurricane hole. It is here that a lively 253-berth marina and very comprehensive technical facilities have been established. Red Lantern is a beautifully presented 2012 example that has clearly been well cared for and thoughtfully upgraded. On deck, the cockpit is well protected with a quality dodger and bimini setup, providing excellent shade for summer cruising. A large solar array is mounted atop the bimini, supporting extended time at anchor. The cockpit is a genuinely comfortable and social space, enhanced by custom cockpit cushions throughout and a large varnished cockpit table in excellent condition. Sailing systems are well laid out, with four Harken winches including an electric winch for the in-mast furling mainsail, making sail handling simple and efficient. Below deck is where this yacht truly stands out. The raised deck saloon design creates an open, airy interior with excellent sightlines and a real sense of space. This is the desirable three-cabin, two-head layout, with generous cabins that feel noticeably more open than many comparable yachts. The saloon table can also convert to an additional berth when required. The galley is well appointed, featuring a large fridge with freezer compartment, making life aboard comfortable for extended cruising or liveaboard use. In terms of systems and upgrades, Red Lantern is impressively equipped. We’re finally sailing together again - this time from Puerto Real, Puerto Rico to Samaná, Dominican Republic. But the Caribbean had other plans for us… With only two weeks for this trip and a small craft advisory in effect, we had no choice but to sail through less-than-ideal conditions. What followed was a fast, intense 140 nm downwind passage with 4-meter waves and 25–35 knots of wind nearly the entire way. The day started beautifully - sunshine, calm seas, and Ella relaxing under the sun. But once we left the wind shadow of Puerto Rico, the waves built quickly… and so did the seasickness. Before long, it was just me at the helm, steering Mirage all the way to Samaná through squalls, spray, and the raw power of the Atlantic. This video is all about rough-weather sailing, staying calm when nature tests you, and the reality behind the romantic idea of life at sea. Will Ella sail with me again after this adventure? I sleep on the floor in a traditional Sasak hut with woven from bamboo, no walls, just air, and wake up to the perfect cone of Mount Rinjani glowing in the sunrise. We scooter to a stunning waterfall, watch men balance 60 kg rice sacks on their tiny bikes like it’s nothing, get a private tour of an organic farm and eat raw cacao beans straight off the cacao tree. Local women weave beautiful fabric right in front of me, we make our own lunch in a restaurant, and then the monsoon hits: in ten minutes we’re soaked to the bone, sliding through mud, laughing hysterically in the pouring rain.
