I’m not in Okinawa. I’m in “Typhoon Alley” on Amami Oshima—one of Japan’s longevity hotspots and, on and off for the past three years, my longevity laboratory. A typhoon has just passed, and walking through the village afterward reminded me of something I keep encountering in places like this: what I call **the Art of Community**. People watch out for each other. There is security in knowing others know you are there—without intrusion. As a temporary resident, I try to remain visible. A nod on the road. Sailing single handed means that if something goes wrong you are on your own. So, I tend to be careful. However, there are occasions when luck is against you and you end up in a situation that's going to take a lot to get out of. This is what happened to me last week. Leaving an anchorage at dawn I was faced with a 200lb lump of metal completely tangled in my chain. The anchorage was packed, I was drifting, and I knew as soon as the sun was properly up I would be getting 20 knots of wind. The water in the anchorage was murky so it was very difficult to work. In short, a bit of a nightmare. This is the story of a day that starts off very very badly and an overnight passage that's a bit special. Living aboard an old steel schooner means there is always something to build, change or figure out. This time, we needed more storage aboard the Alaskan Gypsy, so Scott headed ashore to his friends sawmill in Southeast, Alaska to see what he could find. What started as a hunt through piles of leftover lumber turned into beautiful old-growth Alaska yellow cedar, including pieces that otherwise may have ended up in the burn pile. Back aboard the Gypsy, Scott puts it to work building simple shelves while we continue figuring out what the eventual interior of this boat will become. One of the things we love most about living and traveling through Southeast Alaska is learning to work with what’s around us. Local materials, local people, old skills, unexpected opportunities, and projects that take shape as we go. These shelves may be temporary, but they also gave us a chance to see what weathered Alaska yellow cedar could look like throughout the Gypsy someday. The Westsail 32 traces its roots to the heavy double-ended rescue boats designed by Norwegian naval architect Colin Archer in the late 1800s. American designer William Atkin adapted that type of hull into cruising yachts such as Eric and Thistle, and in the late 1960s builders in California turned the concept into the fiberglass Kendall 32. After Kendall ran into financial trouble, the molds were acquired in 1971 by the newly formed Westsail Corporation, which developed the design into the Westsail 32. With its full keel, cutter rig, high bulwarks, massive bowsprit, heavy fiberglass construction and roughly 19,500-pound displacement, the boat looked and felt more like a small traditional ocean-going vessel than the lighter production sailboats becoming common at the time. What made the Westsail 32 famous, though, was not just the design but the way it was marketed. Westsail sold the dream of leaving ordinary life behind and sailing the world, using images of remote anchorages and tropical destinations under the slogan “Westsail the World.” The boat became especially popular during the cruising boom of the 1970s, with many sold as partially completed kits that owners could finish themselves. Its heavy displacement earned it the nickname “Westsnail,” but it also developed a reputation for extraordinary strength, load-carrying ability and offshore survivability. Around 800 were ultimately built, and many went on to cross oceans and circumnavigate. The Westsail 32 became more than a sailboat—it helped popularize the idea that an ordinary person could buy a relatively small yacht, move aboard, and sail away. #sailing #sailinglife #sailboat

De Porto à Nazaré en voilier… une trombe marine nous oblige à changer de cap ! Dans ce nouvel épisode de notre voyage à bord de Majentess, nous quittons Porto au Portugal pour poursuivre notre navigation vers le sud, direction Nazaré. Une belle navigation à la voile nous attend… jusqu'à ce qu'un phénomène météo impressionnant apparaisse sur notre route : une trombe marine ! 🌪️ C'est la première fois que nous en voyons une en mer, et le spectacle est vraiment impressionnant. Au loin, nous voyons la trombe se former et soulever la mer. Par précaution, nous décidons rapidement de modifier notre route pour nous en éloigner. Après cette rencontre assez inattendue, nous poursuivons notre navigation le long de la côte portugaise avant de faire une escale dans un mouillage. As Loveworkx accelerates across the Indian Ocean, I’m sailing at 7, 8 and sometimes 9 knots through the night. But the fast sailing comes with challenges.
