We spend our last couple of days at the Palm Cay Marina in Nassau tackling a few boat chores and stocking up on provisions before heading to the beautiful Exuma Cays. The Exumas are often described as one of the most stunning, special places in The Bahamas. All of the cruisers we’ve met so far absolutely love the area, so we’ve been anxious to experience it for ourselves for the first time. From the east side of New Providence Island (Nassau), we travel 29 nautical miles in the incredibly clear blue, and at some points, shallow water to reach one of the first stops in the northern Exumas. We dropped anchor in Allan’s Cay, a very small island with nothing but rock and reef (there’s prehistoric iguanas on SW Allan’s, but we didn’t make it over there). While snorkeling the area, we spot 2 lionfish, which are incredibly invasive and dangerous to reefs. They have invaded The Bahamas and much of the Caribbean, have no predators, and each fish releases over 2 million eggs per year. (You can read more about lionfish here: https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/lionfish-facts.html) Keegan has been eager and excited to start spearfishing, we just haven’t seen many fish up until this point. So with his Hawaiian Sling, dives down for his first catch! We’ve known about lionfish and their threat to the reefs for years, we’ve just never had the opportunity to remove any - so this was an exciting moment. After a few days in Allan’s Cay, we head a bit south to our next destination - Norman’s Cay, another favored stop for cruisers. Colombia was amazeballs!! Creativity just oozes from this place and it's people - there's street art, music and performance pieces on every street corner plus plenty of homemade crafts and great food. We were also lucky enough to take a trip up into the Sierra Nevada mountains to the town of Minca and walk through the rainforest, visiting coffee plantations, learning from the locals about the very real and recent history of violence here and enjoying swimming in the rivers. We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We created a Kayak Rack for our jeep that connects to the receiver hitch to make it removable. This is a multi-purpose rack to carry other things or just a kayak. Sea Horse is back in the water so we all take her out for the first sail of the year. Whilst we do that we have a bit of a natter about tides! We get a lot of tide on the east coast of England, yes there are places that have more but with todays tidal range being 6m, we have plenty to keep us occupied. Of course with that much water flowing in and out of the Medway each day you dont get very far if you dont take it into account when going for a sail so here are some of the things we think about when picking a route down river. Floor timbers are a critically important structural member in wooden boats. As we've been building Arabella, there have been many decisions so far in terms of following the original plans or making slight adjustments. Each decision has pros and cons. When it came to the floor timbers, we felt the the wooden floor timbers she was designed with were actually very problematic. Wood floor timbers fastened through split frames cause a hard point and weaken the frame where they are connected. We therefore were pretty adamant about figuring out how to fabricate metal floors for her. Iron was not an option due to the galvanic reactions we have been meticulously avoiding so Silicon Bronze seemed to be the obvious choice. However, casting them was going to be difficult as well as potentially costly. It’s been a nice surprise that the area we’ve been traveling in for the past few months have had such great Nordic influence. A trip to Poulsbo made us feel like home and we got to experience going through the Ballard locks on lake Union. Then it was time to fly to our home away from Ran, Sweden, and meet our families and friends after 1,5 years! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat Ran, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter in January 2016. This 6 day offshore passage from New Caledonia to Australia completed our 12000 mile journey across the south pacific, the worlds largest ocean. Despite ripping our mainsail and having to come up with an alternative sail plan, we finally reach Australia, the end of the south pacific journey for us. Joined along the way by some friendly wildlife, it was a mixed passage in terms of emotion and weather. Part 15 of a series: Sailing Miami to Key West. We sail through Stiltsville using our spinnaker. Anticipation builds as we continue to fish while we sail. The wind begins to build, so I take down the spinnaker single handed. Ashley unfurls the head sail (genoa) and the boat heals as we pick up speed. We speak to other sailors on a catamaran as we pass near Miami.

Just after midnight, swell swept in from the North that caused the boat to rock and roll all nite long. Honestly, it wasn't the worst conditions we've ever been anchored in, but it was far from the best. As a result, Tambi and I slept very little. Molly, however, has the gift of being able to sleep through just about anything. Lucky her! The next day, despite being sleep deprived, we weigh anchor and set sail towards Great Harbour in The Berry Islands. We enjoy a great day of sailing! Once safely anchored in the basin just outside of the marina, we really appreciate a CALM anchorage. Unfortunately, this anchorage won't be calm for much longer because a strong cold front is rapidly approaching that will really test out the holding power of our new Mantus anchor. For today though, it's calm, so we celebrate a successful passage with a walk to the Beach Club where we'll enjoy burgers and cold drinks. Thanks for watching!!
