All of our sailboat repair and maintenance blogs are now hosted on our dedicated maintenance channel, MOTHERSHIP MAINTENANCE Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/c/mothershipmaintenance An edited version of this video is now hosted there. Fixing the bonding strap in our grey water bilge was the filthiest and most complicated boat maintenance job so far. Amel yachts have unique design features so it's not exactly typical DIY #sailboat #maintenance work.. we even had to custom make most of the tools ourselves. We're just thankful we brought our cordless powertools onboard with us. PLEASE NOTE: YouTube have disabled comments on family channels because they sometimes feature kids. Following Simon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/finding_simon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/findingsimon Website: http://simonstiles.com/ Asking Simon - Who are you? I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

The head refit is coming along nicely! The old seacock is removed, the wood paneling gets installed, and most importantly: Maddie sprains her ankle! Maddie is out of commission for the next several days as she waits for her ankle to heal while Herby keeps working on the head refit. Time is running out and they want to be finished with all the boat work, so work must continue to progress through sickness and in health! Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** The spinnaker came out to help us sail (and race!) in the light airs over to Pasar Wajo on Buton Island. While it was one of our slowest sails ever, I was just thrilled that we managed not to rip the spinnaker... again! Pasar Wajo was going to be a big rally stop as we were invited to the Festival Pesona Budaya Tua Buton (Buton’s Festival of Traditional Culture). We got to witness women weaving fabric using traditional looms, babies undergoing a dole-dole ceremony to help them grow up healthy and strong, and ate a traditional Indonesian meal with locals. But the highlight of the day was the performances put on by 5,000 students. Once they were done dancing, we joined them on the field and must have taken 5,000 selfies! The day was long, but absolutely amazing! Thanks for watching! (Footage from August 2018) Be sure to check out Amy's write up on the Festival for even more information on what we saw and did: https://outchasingstars.com/2018/09/08/festival-pesona-indonesia-budaya-tua-buton/ And here's the write up on her cooking class, complete with instructions on how to make traditional Indonesian dishes: https://outchasingstars.com/2018/09/27/exploring-indonesian-food-in-buton/ Curious for more up to date info on where we are and what we're doing? With a 25 knot plus westerly on Sydney Harbour it made for challenging condition for those 16 footers who were brave enough to venture out this afternoon.

BootsProfis Website: https://www.

At the End of Last weeks video, I mentioned that we ordered a new mattress for the boat. Over the last year with the boat being in the yard, with it being closed up for so long, with the leaks and humidity of not running the air conditioner, the mattress was starting to smell a little bit musty. Like most boats, the shape of the bunk is odd and would require a custom mattress if you wanted to have it look like it did from the factory. We decided when we bought the boat to replace the custom spring mattress with a foam mattress of a standard size. To do so, we had to cut the old mattress to create the angled pieces that go around the standard double mattress. The depth is a challenge in this bunk. It must be no taller than eight inches to still allow the cabinet doors around the bunk to open. Normally this is fine as the boats come with really thin 3-4" thick cushions when you buy them but they are NOT comfortable for sleeping on regularly. We found a coil spring mattress that comes vacuum packed to be thin, then rolled up and packed into a small box no bigger than 10" X 10" by the width of the mattress. We show you the challenges we had with this darn thing. We also spent some time just relaxing in the boat and getting it back into organized condition for living again. This started with getting tools and project 'stuff' out of the way. We also allowed our daughter Whitney to do most of the filming during this mattress battle and she lent her own comical style to the whole thing. Oh and we had to bleep out a lot of stuff as well. We were talking like a sailor, to say the least. The Mount Gay Rum Party was a blast on Friday night with a sandbag grinding competition, prizes on a wheel, band, dancing in the sand and daily awards. Racing for Saturday was canceled, due to light air, so we took a tour of a few of the boats in the 90-boat fleet.

Building a cruising sailboat It's finally time to start fitting the engine in the boat, and the first job involved in this is to securely fit the engine bed. I'm going for a belt and braces and more braces approach to this, so first I make up a plug that will be fixed to the inside bottom of the boat, over which the engine bed will locate. The next step is the very scary task of cutting a hole in the correct location in the bottom of the boat. This is achieved with the use of a self-made template. And that is as far as we get in this video. Next week the engine bed fitting will continue. Stay tuned! The SV Tapatya challenge coin is available from; http://www.svseeker.com/wp/product/tapatya-coin/ All proceeds go to the SV Tapatya sail fund Music tracks "Sit and Wonder" and "The Great Divide" available on iTunes, Amazon etc. EP "Shake a Leg" and album "Out of the Moloch" All music from these videos is available from: https://ynotb.bandcamp.com/album/the-sv-tapatya-tracks If you like what you see, leave a tip in the Tips Jar; http://www.svtapatya.com/the-tips-jar.html Follow the build, along with the story of my first cruising adventure (The Miss Molly I Adventures) on my website; http://www.svtapatya.com Support the build, the vlog, the blog and the writing on; https://www.patreon.com/sv_tapatya Or follow me on Instagram for various shots of my boating life; https://www.instagram.com/sv.tapatya This is the story of my building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk-rigged, schooner dory. The boat utilises a hard-chined, plywood construction and this design of boat is a proven, capable, ocean-going vessel. Boat building with plywood is a relatively easy and cost-effective way to produce a strong, monocoque-style boat hull. These videos aim to show the way in which I go about it. Thank you! Tony

In this episode of Sailing Chelsea, we fix the jib halyard (again!) as the stopper knot came undone, but luckily we do this without any dramas! Faye orders the world's biggest food shop then spends hours and hours trying to stow it all! We leave Tenerife and sail Chelsea to La Palma, our last stop in the Canaries before heading to Madeira. We meet Olmo in Tazacorte Marina, La Palma, and he kindly takes us on an incredible hike through the volcano crater (Caldera) to find the only fresh water river in the Canaries. Ryan gets some epic drone footage of this, more to come... this island is amazing! Proceeds from this video will go to the Coral Reef Alliance, but you can also support us directly (and specifically the production of these videos) by becoming a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/theadventuresoftarka Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific. I am sailing Tarka around the world in part to raise money and awareness for coral conservation by supporting the Coral Reef Alliance. You can learn more here: http://www.theadventuresoftarka.com/fundraiser or visit their website directly: http://www.coral.org If you make a donation to their website directly in Tarka's honor, please send me an e-mail copy of your receipt so I can keep track of Tarka's fundraising. You can forward to: theadventuresoftarka@gmail.com Additional support for Tarka’s sail for CORAL (The Coral Reef Alliance) comes from contributions by: Soylent - Healthy provisioning for the long offshore passages Sta Lok - Swage-less terminals for portions of Tarka’s rigging, making it an easy DIY job and allowing for easy inspection Victron Energy - Providing monitoring solutions for Tarka's batteries, to ensure we always have enough juice to do what we need to. === Music credits: Plastic or Paper - Wes Hutchinson Catch our Moment - Markvard: https://soundcloud.com/markvard Dance With Me – Ehrling: https://soundcloud.com/ehrling

Having some very rudimentary knowledge and no practical experience with sailing, 3 years ago we decided we wanted to pack up our stuff and sail around the world. We worked our a$$es off to save up enough money, learn some basic things about boats and wind and stuff and get all the required licenses (after all Alex is German and I (Mandy) am Dutch and our governments love licenses, so as the good civilians that we are, we got them all!). Now the time has come to leave the city of Berlin, which has been our comfortable home for the past 11 (Alex) and 5 (Mandy) years, behind. We wave our friends and family, colleagues and the city goodbye, drag our many, heavy bags to the plane and arrive on our boat Blue in Lefkas, Greece. Today we went from living in Berlin to living on a sailboat in Greece! Today we start our sailing adventure in the Med! If you are as excited as we are and are curious to see where the wind blows us and which difficulties we encounter upon, join us on this journey and subscribe! If you have any comments, suggestion, questions or feel to need to praise (or scold) us, leave a comment down below and we’d happily write you back :). Of course a thumbs up is always appreciated very much so and helps us a lot! Rewind back a few days to where we explore the main town of Portsmouth in Domenica, we then get the boat ready for the arrival of Khiara's parents who've come to visit us for Christmas. After a bountiful Christmas (thanks to the parents being couriers of all the things we've ordered) we then have some fun playing with Bee-utiful Balms creams (https://www.facebook.com/madebygiselle/) and some new filming gear. We then head to Fort Shirley, a historic and iconic landmark of the Battle of the Saints and numerous history altering events, then on to Indian River, where Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed. We start hauling up anchor for an leisurely afternoon sail to Isle de Saint's in Guadeloupe however our anchor tells us otherwise and Adam yet again tests his freediving skills Music Credits Music from Epidemic Sound About Us We (Adam and Khiara) are making sailing videos and adventures around the world on our 1981 Tayana Vancouver 42. We plan to sail around the world and make our way back to Australia. Want more? Site internet: http://goo.gl/1jaV6G Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JeanneauFrance Twitter: https://twitter.com/EtsJeanneau

In Chapter 2, we will follow our journey in the Uttan landfill in Mumbai. Uttan is the second biggest dump of the city of Mumbai, Deonar being the first. Michel Biel, one of the emerging actors of the moment in France and protagonist of a well-known French television series, that has been directed by masters such as Christopher Nilan ,will discover the issue of plastic pollution in our oceans and will do so, by confronting a reality as brutal as that of the Uttan landfill. Every year, India produces 60 million tons of waste, of which 2.7 million are generated only in Mumbai. The facilities that are there to absorb the tons generated in the city every day are the Deonar and Uttan landfills which also receive tons of plastic waste from other countries. The amount of waste arriving in the Mumbai landfills exceeds twice the capacity of these. As a result of the overload, the mountains of garbage tower over 30 meters high. Local communities and environmentalists have long complained about the lax enforcement of hazardous waste regulations, and Uttan is just one example of a phenomenon happening in many sites around the world. When the heavy seasonal rains arrive, tons of plastic from the landfills wash up into the ocean, unsupervised by the management, and this in turns refreshes the capacity of the dump to receive more waste. That is why many sanctioned garbage dumps in the world are intentionally set up on the coast or close to rivers. There are several dumps that are well managed as well, but it is time to push for better waste management, as well as for more waste reduction and recycling strategies. You can do your part, sharing the Mumbai Diaries of North Sails and spreading the message: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, it’s your choice. Here is What 30 New York City Street Musicians Sound Like Covering New York State of Mind and it is awesome! 30 New York City Street Musicians, who were featured in the Award Winning Limited Edition Art Book book, The Noise Beneath the Apple®, by Heather Jacks, came together at Grand Street Recording in Brooklyn, NY to record a version of “New York State of Mind,” written by Billy Joel. The song was arranged, produced and mixed by Keaton Simons, co-produced by John Briggs, engineered by Ken Rich, assistant engineered by Jake Lummus, and executive produced by John Seiter. I live on a sailboat now, but this was a project we did some years ago, and I just loved it. I hope you do too. If you dig the journey, we would love you to join us on our blog at: https://gypseaexplorer.com/ Cheers!
