In this video, I walk through my practical, low-stress approach to fiberglassing wooden boat parts — the same methods I use in my own shop to keep the process clean, efficient, and predictable. If you’ve avoided fiberglassing because it feels complicated or unpleasant, this video is for you. Over the years I’ve developed simple techniques that remove most of the frustration and help produce consistent results without unnecessary fuss. We live four seasons aboard our sailboat in Alaska, and this episode follows a real cruising stretch through Southeast Alaska’s Inside Passage. We start by making our way toward Warm Springs Bay on Baranof Island, running through big Southeast Alaska water, strong currents, shifting light, and the kind of weather window you appreciate. From Portage Bay, past Admiralty Island, across Chatham Strait, and into Warm Springs, this is the rhythm of cruising Alaska by boat. After a stop at Warm Springs, we continue on toward Kake, Alaska, where boat life meets small-town Southeast Alaska culture. We walk the harbor, look at a. job and visit with the locals (not filmed), and experience what it means to move through these communities by water. Atz Kilcher is aboard with us for this stretch, and somewhere along the way he gives Scott the perfect title: a “circuit sailor” traveling town to town, helping people, making friends, taking photographs, fixing things, and living connected to the places we pass through. This is not polished marina cruising. This is real Alaska liveaboard life: reading currents, cooking dinner underway, arriving in the dark, waking up in new harbors, meeting people, and continuing toward Rocky Pass. Quiero aclarar algo importante para quienes vean ese momento 👇 En lugar de caer a babor para buscarle la popa como siempre hago en estas situaciones, decidí llamar por radio (VHF), que es precisamente para lo que está. Según el Regla 18 del RIPA, un velero tiene prioridad frente a un buque a motor en condiciones normales. Pero más allá de lo que diga la ley, mi forma de navegar siempre es clara: evitar problemas y buscar la maniobra más segura. En este caso concreto, la situación era especial: Nosotros salíamos de Santa Cruz de Tenerife El buque se dirigía hacia Santa Cruz 👉 Si yo caía a babor para pasar por su popa, y él hacía lo que indica la normativa (caer a estribor para dejarme pasar), hubiéramos terminado cruzándonos continuamente, empeorando la situación. In this episode of our Arctic sailing adventure, we continue through the spectacular islands of Vesterålen in Northern Norway aboard our sailing vessel Polaris. With light winds on the nose, we motor from Stø towards Skipnes, passing quiet harbours, rugged mountains and late-season coastal landscapes. In Skipnes, the main season is already over. The harbour is calm, the hotel seems closed, but we still find a cold beer and a perfect end to a sunny day. The next morning, we leave Polaris behind and walk towards Tinden, an old fishing village and trading post. What looks like a short and easy hike turns into a wet, swampy trail, even after a long dry spell. Tinden itself feels almost deserted out of season, but the smell of fresh paint shows that someone is still caring for this historic place. From there we continue to Skårvågen. The following morning brings thick fog over the harbour and coast, making navigation through the rock-strewn waters unappealing. Instead, we hike up Skårvågfjellet, 403 metres above sea level, rising above the fog into blue sky. As the weather changes and time runs short, we adjust our plans, leave the idea of Trollfjord behind, and set a shorter course towards Sortland. It’s a hull of a job, but it’s time to turn Isabella around so we can work on her starboard side. A few episodes ago, Steve polished and painted her green stripe on the port side of her hull. Now, we’ll work on the other side. Taking her out for a short spin Karen dawns her red bikini while Steve waxes poetic and does a cockpit dance. We pass by some new docks at a marina and enjoy some time out on the water. Docking is always like a controlled crash. Steve steers the boat while Karen catches the lines. On Isabella, it’s easiest to secure the stern line first since the bow thruster makes the bow a lot easier to handle. Ohhh, if we only had a stern thruster, too. Our existing bow camera quit working. Installed a Garmin GC100 in its place. So far so good with the camera performance. Installing a Garmin update seems to have corrected some of the complaints about it dropping the video frequently. In this episode we finally get sailing after a 10 week refit at Rebak island marina in Malaysia. We sail up through the islands towards Phuket, Thailand, but have to make a sudden change of plans when the weather packs in, and there are no anchoring or mooring options at all in these remote islands. We shouldn’t have left when we did… but we sailed anyway. In this episode of Sailing Sunday, we sail to the Bahamas on a 3-day ocean passage after rushing across the USA to get back to our boat. With almost no sleep, we left the dock and crossed toward the Bahamas, dealing with rough seas, bad timing and a weather window that didn’t go to plan. This turned into one of the most exhausting short passages we’ve had. We missed our weather window, spent days smashing straight into wind and waves and ran into a few unexpected problems along the way… including running out of fuel offshore. By the time we reached the Bahamas, we were completely wrecked. But what we didn’t tell you… is that all of this was happening while something pretty big was going on behind the scenes.
