► When Philippe Marcovich invited me for a ride on his rigid-wing catamaran (designed by Hugues de Turckheim and Philippe himself), I couldn’t say no… even though we’d already tested this prototype in our Forever Green Special Edition #22. Afinado, as it is called, will be unveiled to the public for the first time at La Grande-Motte. ► This all-carbon multihull, 10 meters long and 9 meters wide—including its ladders—weighs barely a ton. With its elegant canoe-style bows, it certainly has style, but it’s not its design that should catch your eye… Instead, one looks up to discover a 17-meter carbon mast supporting an astonishing 60-square-meter flexible, thick wing called the ACCWing (for automatic camber control wing). The principle is thus to have at one’s disposal, depending on the wind direction and strength, a flat or cambered profile, much like an airplane wing. This was one of those days in Port Protection where nothing goes the way you think it will, with surprises around most every corner. We started with a simple plan… Scott was going to go to work at Liz's and Audrey take a little time at the boat. But like most days living on a boat in remote Alaska, the plan had other ideas. What followed was a full day of real life unfolding in every direction. From a walk up the boardwalk to return some gear, small-town encounters, to troubleshooting diesel leaks in the bilge, debating whether to move the boat, and squeezing into tight dock space with shifting wind conditions… it turned into one of those classic “figure it out as you go” days. And then somehow, after all that… the day ended with an unexpected paddleboard trip across the bay at sunset to our friend Veronica's for a karaoke party we didn’t plan on. That’s Port Protection. Not every stop is planned… and sometimes those are the best ones. We dropped anchor in Puerto Patillas, Puerto Rico and were blown away. A peaceful anchorage, a waterfront park with a playground (perfect for homeschooling days), live music, and even iguanas roaming around—it quickly became one of those unexpected favorites. But the real goal? Vieques Island. After a rolly night in Esperanza, we moved to the calm anchorage of Puerto Ferro—and that’s when the adventure really began. A long dinghy ride in the dark brought us to Mosquito Bay, the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world… and it did NOT disappoint. Every movement lit up the water in glowing blue. One of the most surreal experiences we’ve ever had. We wrapped it up exploring Puerto Ferro—hiking, paddleboarding through mangroves, and even spotting baby spotted eagle rays. This video covers the moment the engine told me something was wrong. On startup I heard a sharp clack, clack, clack — the kind of sound that immediately tells you to stop and reassess. A suspected hydraulic lock is not something you push through. If you get it wrong, you destroy the engine. So the decision was immediate. Sails down, boat stopped, and a full shift from passage-making to problem management. From that point on it was about protecting the boat, conserving power, and understanding exactly what was happening before taking any further action. This is the difference between continuing blindly and recognizing when a situation has the potential to escalate into a serious failure. This is not about fixing things quickly.
