Laura Dekker first sailed a MiniCat in Bora Bora when on her epic solo circumnavigation 17 years ago. She soon had her own MiniCat on board her ketch and since then has been a MiniCat Ambassador. MiniCat are proud to support the Laura Dekker World Sailing Foundation and their work with youngsters teaching real life-skills whilst sailing across oceans. On board the young sailors have access to two MiniCat sailboats which are used to teach them sailing skills and also for them to have a lot of fun at anchor wherever in the world they are. Winter has fully set in around Arabella in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland—the harbor is freezing, ice sheets are moving with the tide, and keeping the boat safe becomes a daily task. This week we show how we protect a liveaboard sailboat in icy conditions using a deicer (bubbler system) and even a floating log to shield the hull from shifting ice. Once the boat is secured, we head out for two unique ice climbing days on Newfoundland’s west coast. First, we climb a 200-foot frozen waterfall and rappel using V-threads—leaving nothing behind on the ice. Then we top-rope surreal sea cliffs formed by freezing ocean spray at Bottle Cove, where ice crashes directly into the Atlantic below. From winter boat maintenance to safe rappelling techniques, ice screw anchors, autoblocks, and climbing over ocean waves, this week blends cold-weather sailing life with technical ice climbing in one of Canada’s most dramatic coastal landscapes. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built.

Is the Com-Pac 23 Pilothouse a smart upgrade, or a costly compromise? Or both? Or Neither? Adding a pilothouse changes more than comfort. It changes weight distribution, windage, stability, performance, resale dynamics and long-term ownership costs. In this video, we break down the real engineering tradeoffs behind one of the most highly rated and debated small cruising sailboats ever built. If you’re considering buying, upgrading, retiring aboard, or investing in a small cruiser, this analysis will help you think beyond the brochure and make a financially intelligent decision. Because when you add structure above the deck, you’re not just adding shelter. You’re changing physics! Thanks for stopping by, Mitch Small Sailboat Big Water smallsailboatbigwater@gmail.com

It's 6.5m long and when it flies it's doing almost double the speed of a 'normal' Mini 650, no wonder the focus of attention for the famous single handed race across the Atlantic, the Mini Transat, has been on Benoit Marie's foiling Nicomatic. But while the French skipper is leading the charge in this notoriously hard core racing scene, he's also plotting the future of performance cruising.......and the two are starting to look very similar. We take a look at Skaw [A] a radical new 12m performance cruiser. But could you live with a scow? Another class that knows all about scows it the Class 40 where the bluff bow configuration is unstoppable. And in the Globe 40 double handed race around the world the competition is tight at the top. So tight that after 7,000 miles of racing no one knew who had won. MAKAI Power Catamarans is a modern, innovative brand in the luxury boating world focused on designing and building high-performance power catamarans that combine elegance, comfort, and superior sea-going capabilities. Founded by a team of industry veterans with decades of experience, the company has quickly made a name for itself by addressing a growing market demand for multihulls that offer more space and efficiency than traditional monohulls, without sacrificing performance or style. Italian designer Emanuele Rossi contributed to the brand’s distinctive aesthetic, which draws inspiration from classic sports cars to create sleek, athletic lines and cutting-edge hull shapes. Makai’s debut model, the M37, is a flagship example of this ethos. At around 37 feet in length, it blends spacious luxury with thoughtful engineering: dual cabins with ensuite heads, generous cockpit and salon areas, and innovative features like the Air-Glide shock-absorbing hull design that enhances comfort and fuel efficiency. The M37’s semi-asymmetric hull gives it surprisingly high performance for its class, with some configurations capable of speeds approaching those of much larger vessels while maintaining stable, smooth rides in varied conditions. Building on that success, Makai has expanded its line with models like the M42, which emphasizes all-season cruising comfort with an enclosed saloon, generous galley, and optional flybridge — ideal for longer voyages and diverse climates. Across its fleet, Makai places a strong emphasis on fuel efficiency, onboard comfort, and practical usability, making power catamarans accessible for both experienced boaters and newcomers. By positioning production in Croatia and leveraging a global dealer network, the company aims to bring its blend of performance and elegance to cruising enthusiasts around the world. After 73 days in the boatyard…the rudder saga finally ends. We designed them. Second-guessed them. Stressed about foam compression. Ripped off Coosa board. Glassed them. Sanded until our arms stopped working. And then realised the boat wasn’t even high enough to fit them. Classic. In this episode we’re finally finishing our DIY catamaran rudders on our 57ft abandoned catamaran - testing our bearings, setting our 6mm hull gap, bogging, fairing and doing everything we can to make sure these blades are ready for launch in 7 days. This is the last major job standing between us and the water. We’ve lived on a steel Adams 35 for five years, steel fabrication we understand. Fibreglass rudders with coosa board and H115 foam cores ? That’s been a STEEP learning curve. Huge thanks to Riley, Callum, Dayne and the team at Ocean Degree at The Boat Works for helping us through the glassing phase - and to our mates who continue to lend tools, time and moral support as this deadline looms. Seven days. Very little energy left. But these rudders are going on - one way or another!! _____________________________________________________________________________ For ad-free and early release episodes, behind the scenes content and live updates, check out our Patreon! 👉 Come funziona? In this Ask Me Anything episode, I answer the question everyone keeps asking… Who is actually coming with me to Thailand to pick up the new boat? There’s been a lot of speculation about crew, plans, and what’s happening next — so I finally address it. I also talk about: • Whether Chloe is joining me • Lauryn? • Thailand flotilla details • What I actually have planned once I get there • The current status of the boat raffle • RV updates and the Camping World situation • Craziest sailing mistakes I’ve ever seen • And how to get hired on a sailboat Big year ahead. New boat. New adventures. Possibly new crew. Let’s get into it.

This week we continue heading south on the Intracoastal Waterway, making our way toward Palm Beach, Florida. What starts as a fairly normal cruising day quickly turns into something much more confronting. Between boat jobs like waterproofing our cushions and settling into life underway again, we’re hit with a scary reminder of how unpredictable life aboard can be when Nala suddenly becomes unwell and we have to rush her to the vet. It’s the kind of moment no cruising pet owner ever wants to face — and one that forces us to think seriously about what could happen when we’re far more remote. With a Pacific crossing on the horizon, this experience becomes a wake-up call about preparedness, medical planning, and the realities of life at sea when help isn’t just around the corner. This episode is a mix of cruising, boat maintenance, and real life — the good, the stressful, and everything in between. ⛵ Sailing south on the ICW 🐾 A health scare with Nala 🛠️ Boat jobs & preparations 🌊 Preparing mentally for the Pacific Thanks for being here and supporting our journey — it truly means the world to us.
