A practical overview of preparing and hauling a fixed-keel sailboat on a custom telescoping-riser, tandem axle trailer. In the previous Part 1 episode we looked at the trailer design elements for ordering or building a versatile keelboat trailer for various sized boats. In this follow-up video we look at the operational side of loading and hauling mid-size sailboats on the road. This includes loading the boat, unstepping the mast and securing on deck crutches, handling road logistics for short or long trips, and blocking up the trailer for storage. We also see what can happen when a travel lift breaks down and drops the boat. Our second day cruising around the Thai islands on my new sailing catamaran started at anchor on the north end of Koh Larn. By 8 a.m., the peaceful anchorage was already filling up with tour boats and jet skis, and it was getting pretty uncomfortable. But before we could escape to the quieter side of the island, I had an electrical problem to figure out. The batteries were showing a much higher load than they should have, the charger wasn’t keeping up, and I couldn’t figure out where all the extra power was going. Luckily, we had plenty of solar helping supplement the system. After chasing the electric gremlin for a while, we pulled anchor and sailed around to the east side of Koh Larn, where we found a much more peaceful anchorage near town. There was even a floating dock, which made it easy to take the dinghy ashore, walk the dogs, and find a great little waterfront spot for lunch. Back on the boat, I tried out my brand-new eFoil for the first time, Olivia took the paddleboard out, and we enjoyed a relaxing afternoon before heading back into town for an amazing dinner on the water. This Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 49 Deck Saloon, PURA VIDA, has been designed and equipped with comfortable cruising in mind. In fact, almost everything about the 49DS (whether you’re on or below deck) makes the experience of sailing easy, enjoyable, and stress-free. She features a sloop rig with a fully battened mainsail, lazy bag, and lazy jacks, along with a furling genoa, a Spinnaker/Cruising Chute, and a never-used storm jib. The standing rigging was renewed in 2023, providing added peace of mind for future voyages. Propulsion comes from a powerful Yanmar 110hp diesel engine with a Gori propeller and rope cutter, complemented by a bow thruster for effortless manoeuvring.
