We have two Yanmar 4JH4-TE 75hp engines. With regular maintenance, these engines should comfortably last 10,000hrs and ours have 5,000. Engine maintenance is difficult on a boat. Space is tight, temperatures are often unbearable, and unless you have confidence and experience working on engines, it’s not uncommon to discover a lot of deferred maintenance. When we purchased the boat, we knew it was leaking oil. We were also pretty certain that nothing deeper than semi-regular oil and impeller changes were done. Now we have three choices: 1. Repower. 2. Replace the old components with new ones. 3. Disassemble, clean, and fix the components that can be salvaged and replace those that can’t. We’ve opted for door number three. Shawn has a lifetime wrenching on engines, developing this skill from about age six at his father and brother’s sides. Also, new engines are not in the budget. So, it’s makeover time.

Ever wondered how a DIY water maker works that uses a pressure washer as a main pump? See how we tackled a DIY water maker installation on a sailboat to achieve an off-grid water supply for sailing. In this video, we share why we chose the octopus water maker, a cost-effective water maker for sailors, and how it simplifies turning seawater into drinking water. If you’re wondering, do I need a water maker, or comparing portable vs fixed water makers, this guide explains the decision-making process and setup. Facing the challenges of solo sailing as a female sailor, I navigated the highs and lows of single-handed sailing while tackling DIY boat repair projects, from engine fixes to full boat refits on a budget. My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. Together, we face the unique dynamics and challenges of sailing as a couple, balancing off-grid life, sustainable sailing, and the demands of long-term cruising. For months, Steve and Robin have been moving Arabella south, waiting for warm enough weather to haul her, and give her a fresh coat of paint. The time has finally come. Arabella is getting hauled out, and—in this episode—we’ll detail the hard work that went into scraping and painting their homebuilt wooden sailboat. Arabella’s last paint job was done in Rockland, Maine, back in November 2023. It was a little too cold, and despite tenting and heating the hull below the waterline, the paint job just didn’t stick. This paint job will be different. With a sunny, warm, and dry forecast for the foreseeable future, it’s time to get to work. But he’s gotta move fast to prevent the oak and cedar planks from drying out too much while Arabella sits on the hard in the hot Florida sun (and to prevent a yard bill bigger than his bank account). He starts by gathering and sharpening the equipment he needs to scrape the bottom paint and splooging seam compound off Arabella. Steve singlehandedly scrapes and sands the entire hull down to the wood, and explains why the bare hull looks the way it looks (hint: the wood isn’t moldy, it’s just the remnants of a layer of black bottom paint). As usual, Steve’s got a well-thought-out plan, and a few boxes of TotalBoat paint and products to make the magic happen. Steve and Robin use the laser to mark the waterline, bringing it up just a few more inches. Before applying the first coat of bottom paint, Robin gives Arabella a bath in denatured alcohol. The crew gets to painting, coat after coat. Ultimately, they apply three coast of bottom paint and two coats of topside paint, working well into the night to get all of the work done. The finishing touch is Arabella’s name, hand painted onto the stern of the boat. After 8 days on the hard, Arabella is ready to be relaunched, and Robin, Steve and Akiva are ready to continue their journey south to…who knows! But, they have another problem they could use your help with: modifying the 8-pin connector on their Epropulsion electric dinghy motor. Their Propulsion Evo Tiller has left them stranded one too many times, but Steve and Robin really like other aspects of the motor and don’t want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. If you have an idea, we’d love to hear it! Send your thoughts to acorntoarabella@gmail.com. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! The Leopard Catamarans App offers a groundbreaking solution to modern boating by offering a fully integrated digital ecosystem for boat owners, bareboat skippers, and fleet managers. Powered by BoatClick, it features a precise Boat Digital Twin, consolidating all boat-related systems usage, data, and parts into a single, accessible hub. Existing solutions often rely on scattered resources or manual input, causing inefficiencies. This app overcomes these issues with a fully preloaded, ready-to-use system, ensuring maximum convenience. Marine Chat AI addresses a key challenge of AI tools by delivering precise and reliable answers exclusively from a secure, closed database. Unlike general-purpose AI, it draws from the owner manual and user manuals of the boat’s systems, the combined expertise of dozens of professionals, and decades of operational experience managing hundreds of catamarans. This ensures accurate responses tailored to the specific needs of boaters, empowering them with confidence in their decisions. Further elevating the user experience, the app enhances after-sale support with a fully digital service process. Why They Chose the Cruising Lifestyle For Alicia, sailing represented freedom and adventure—the excitement of waking up in a new country every few days. Douglas, on the other hand, is a homebody who values community, stability, and creative work. Though he enjoyed the experience, he struggled with the transient nature of the lifestyle and missing his lifelong friendships and family connections. One major realization? Freedom at sea comes with limitations. While sailing offers the ability to move, it also means being at the mercy of the weather. At one point, they were stuck in a terrible anchorage for three weeks, just waiting for a weather window to travel east. Pro-tip #1: If you’re considering the sailing life, get LASIK eye correction before you go—it’s much easier than dealing with constantly dirty glasses on a boat! Challenges They Faced • The difficulty of returning home – Finding an island with a marina and an airport that aligned with their needs wasn’t always easy. • Financial reality – They realized they didn’t have the funds to sustain full-time cruising indefinitely. While remote work opportunities exist, reliable income was a challenge. However, Starlink has been a game-changer for those working remotely from a boat. • Boat maintenance fatigue – Douglas grew weary of constantly checking the weather and fixing the boat. He wished they had bought a boat already located in the Caribbean instead of sailing down from Wisconsin. However, his favorite part of the journey was traveling through the river system—something they would have missed had they started elsewhere. Pro-tip #2: For passages, have a third crew member. If one person gets sick, handling the boat becomes incredibly difficult. Pro-tip #3: Be self-sufficient with repairs—there’s no mechanic on call when you're offshore! Scariest Moments at Sea 1 A boat dragging into them at night – They anchored in calm conditions but woke up to 50-knot winds in the middle of the night with torrential rain. The sudden change made even getting out of bed difficult, let alone dealing with another boat drifting toward them. 2 Alicia’s allergic reaction to conch – She got incredibly sick, and if she had been on land, she would have called an ambulance. On the boat, she had to push through without immediate medical help. 3 Managing medical needs – Douglas relies on thyroid medication, and getting regular medical checks in the Caribbean wasn’t easy. Pro-tip #4: Learn as much as possible and practice your skills before setting sail. Pro-tip #5: Stock up on regular medications—you won’t always have easy access to a pharmacy. Pro-tip #6: Schedule regular visits home to see family and for medical appointments. They regretted spending the first year without leaving the boat. What They Would Do Differently • Choose a catamaran instead of a monohull – Alicia wonders if the boat’s motion will impact the video, leading to a key insight:Pro-tip #7: If you don’t like rocking, buy a catamaran! • Prioritize personal well-being over the boat – Sailing can be stressful, but at the end of the day, you are more important than your vessel.Pro-tip #8: Your health and sanity matter more than your boat. • Plan for the real costs – One of the biggest surprises? It costs more than you think! Food and laundry can be incredibly expensive in certain places.Pro-tip #9: Budget for more than expected—it will cost more than you think! • Stock up on spares – Whether it’s boat parts or basic necessities, having backups is crucial.Pro-tip #10: Food and laundry are surprisingly expensive. Plan accordingly!Pro-tip #11: Stock up on spares—you never know when you’ll need them! • Know your boat inside and out – Whether it’s maintenance, repairs, or handling, a deep understanding of your vessel makes a huge difference.Pro-tip #12: Intimately learn your own boat—it will save you trouble in the long run. Final Thoughts Alicia and Douglas loved different aspects of the cruising lifestyle. Alicia thrived in the adventure, while Douglas ultimately longed for a home base with his family and friends. Their biggest motivator for returning? They now have their first grandbaby. Their journey was filled with unforgettable moments, invaluable lessons, and a deep appreciation for both the freedom of the sea and the comfort of home. Would they do it again? Maybe—but with a few adjustments. For anyone considering the sailing life, their advice is clear: plan ahead, know your boat, and be ready for the unexpected. And while "stuck" isn't our best look, we're working on embracing our circumstances – even if it isn't where we planned to be. Because when you can't change the wind, you adjust your sails. ---------------------------------------- WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity. We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us. Things We're Most Curious About... GETTING OFF-GRID Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so. TALKING TO STRANGERS People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment. Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. In this episode of Sailing Eleutheros, we continue our sailing adventure in Bermuda! After Mark’s solo offshore passage in the last episode, I reunite with him in St. George’s. Before we set sail again, Mark tackles a crucial boat maintenance task—rebedding the port lights with butyl rubber to ensure our sailboat stays dry and seaworthy. Exploring Bermuda, we walk along the stunning coastline, passing by the historic Town Cut—the narrow channel Mark sailed through to enter St. George’s Harbour. Along the way, we encounter a lively group of goats running along the road, adding a fun surprise to our adventure! Our journey takes us to the Unfinished Church, a breathtaking ruin that tells a fascinating story of Bermuda’s past. Later, we hop on a local bus to Windy Hill Farm on market day, experiencing Bermuda’s vibrant local culture. Our return walk along the old railway trail is a nature lover’s dream, surrounded by lush tropical foliage. To wrap up this episode, we visit Fort St. Catherine, a historic coastal defense built in 1614, offering incredible ocean views and a glimpse into Bermuda’s colonial history. After weeks of waiting for parts, we're finally putting our sailboat back together! This isn't just about repairs. Our boat is our home and our only means of transport. In this episode, we fix our diesel tank fuel supply, recalibrate the system, and reinstall the head sail. But just as we're ready to go, tropical depressions in the Coral Sea force us to put our plans on hold. Living aboard a sailboat means being self-sufficient, planning for the unexpected, and ensuring that everything works when it matters most. Without a reliable diesel engine, we lose control in tight spaces, risk getting caught in bad weather, and can't move when we need to. That's why this process is so critical. After years of being career focused, we decided it was time to shake things up and sought a lifestyle that would provide us with new experiences, humble us, allow us to visit remote locations, and experience new cultures. In 2021, we traded our regular suburban lifestyle for a nomadic one and moved aboard our sailboat, Te Tāiko, a Chico 40. After three years sailing in New Zealand and preparing for Category 1 (regulations for New Zealand registered vessels planning to sail offshore), we set sail from New Zealand to Fiji on the 23 May 2024. This would be Vicki and Tāiko's first ocean passage and Adam's third. We have since sailed to Vanuatu and New Caledonia, where we will be during the cyclone season. We fund our lifestyle by working part time. This sometimes involves returning to New Zealand to help top up the bank account. The other avenue is through our content creation where we document our journey though YouTube videos and our our social media accounts and website. We would love for you to follow our progress as we navigate a nomadic lifestyle. If our content is something that you enjoy, please consider supporting our channel. @the_reeva_project Embarking on a journey from the serene Krabi River to the vibrant shores of Satun, we set sail under the starlit sky, arriving at the Satun River by midday, precisely timed with the tides. Despite meticulous planning and guidance from the PSS Satun team, unexpected shallow patches led us to run aground. In this moment of challenge, the unwavering kindness of the Thai community shone brightly. Three longtail boat crews came to our aid, skillfully maneuvering Reeva back to deeper waters. Their generosity and expertise left an indelible mark on our hearts. Upon reaching Phithak Shipyard and Services (PSS), established in 1992 in Ban Chebilang, Satun province , the proficient team took charge of Reeva's haul-out with remarkable efficiency. PSS has evolved from servicing fishing boats and ferries to accommodating a diverse range of vessels, including yachts . The shipyard is renowned for its comprehensive services, encompassing mechanical repairs, painting, and intricate woodwork . Navigating to PSS requires careful attention due to unmarked channels and tide-dependent access . Despite these challenges, the shipyard's commitment to customer satisfaction and the genuine warmth of its staff make it a preferred destination for many sailors . Robin finally returns to Arabella after spending a few weeks dealing with work stuff. Steve takes the opportunity to handle some housekeeping and tame Akiva’s mane while waiting for Robin to return. Once Robin arrives, Steve takes her on a tour of the oldest city in America. St. Augustine was founded by Spanish settlers in the early 1500s—and it has the fort to prove it! Steve and Robin get to walking, touring the Castillo de San Marcos, which was built from a curious material called “coquina,” which is made from a paste of mollusk shells, crustaceans, and brachiopods. Walking through the fort, Steve and Robin get a taste of what life was like 500 years ago. After their tour of the fort, Steve and Robin poke around the shops, and check out a few interesting art galleries. Robin gets serenaded by Ken Jensen at Jensen Pottery, playing a ceramic guitar he crafted himself—art meets music! And Phillip Castillo—St. Augustine’s OG of art—shares the Bart’s local art collection with Arabella’s crew. Of course, coffee was involved :-) Robin and Steve head out of St. Augustine and head to a quieter, more secluded anchorage. At Ponte Vedra, they enjoy long walks on the boardwalk, paddle boarding through a pod of dolphins, and wildlife spotting in the nature preserve. Life doesn’t get much better than this! They even meet another local artist, Ross Currington, who is a skilled artists and woodworker who carves incredibly detailed fish out of cypress wood! Steve also shares the plan for the rest of the winter season. Sailing to Puerto Rico isn’t in the cards at this point, so the crew decides to change course and make way towards the Florida Keys instead, with the ultimate goal of sailing to the Dry Tortugas! Robin has found a few mountain biking trail networks along the way south, which is a good consolation prize since they won’t be climbing in Puerto Rico, as they hoped. If anyone has suggestions for what to see or where to anchor the boat along the east coast of Florida, email acorntoarabella@gmail.com. Likewise, if anyone has ideas for a graphic for our next tee-short campaign, we’d like to see it! All creative concepts are welcome! Welcome aboard to our sailing adventures! Join us as we dive into boat maintenance, DIY upgrades, and unforgettable moments on the water. Recently, we gave the forward head a teak backsplash makeover and repaired some molding. We encountered some manatees while walking. By stripping old latex paint off a wall, a beautiful African mahogany wood surface was exposed. Explained the hydraulic steering system on Isabella—from the helm pump to the autopilot actuated electric pump and hydraulic linear drive. Waiting to get it power bled to get any air out of the hydraulic fluid. We and the boatyard also did some engine care, including an acid flush for the Cummins engine heat exchanger, antifreeze flushing for the Northern Lights generator, and rebuilding the diesel fuel tank access flange. And of course, we’ve got some great music and a little waltz to make the experience even more fun!
