Steve and Robin only have 4 days before Arabella needs to leave Harwich Port. Meanwhile, there’s some spring cleaning that needs to be done. Winter clothes, boots, fenders, and some dock lines are removed from the boat to be stored until next winter. This will be Arabella’s first sail of 2024. The plan is to move the boat to Mattapoisett. On day 1, the boat will sail to Cuttyhunk Island. On day 2, Arabella will sail to Buzzards Bay before reaching Mattapoisett, which is where the on-the-water journey began. It’s crazy to think that it’s almost been a year since Arabella launched. The boat has been prepped for sailing—unhooked from shore power, systems fired up, and dock lines untied. Everything was good to go…or so they thought. Around 6pm, when turning the engine back on to motor into the marina, the oil pressure light came on. Just before reaching the buoy of Cuttyhunk’s channel, the engine went dead. Fortunately, the wind was blowing toward the boat and away from the shallows, and luckily, the engine died just before entering the channel. And even more luckily, the tie-downs on the anchor chains were freed before taking off in case they needed to be deployed due to an emergency. The crew decided to hook up outside the channel in water deep enough for everyone to feel safe. Unfortunately, that was the end of sailing for the day. The end of the boatyard is insight as our NEW RIG arrives and we re-step the mast! https://www.sailingnandji.com The long one month in the boatyard is finally coming close to the end. We first hauled out Nandji 2 to complete 3 major jobs in preparation for the year of sailing ahead. With a gnarly Indian Ocean in front of us, we need to make sure the vessel is up for the task. Hauling out, and wasting no time, we removed the mast the following day in order to replace the standing rig. With the mast on the ground, we got an accurate pin to pin measurement of the wires, a rig plan then created and then sent through to Hamma in Australia where our wires were fabricated by Josh and the team at Arcus Wire. Whilst we waited for DHL to get our new rig to us in Thailand, it gave us time to sort the other 2 major jobs. Below the waterline was was being attended by the team at Yacht Blast, firstly dustless blasting the bottom and revealing the true integrity of the hull. A million tiny holes were then subsequently filled n faired and the butt re anti fouled to keep those barnacles away. With the other major jobs underway, it gave Bonita and I time to concentrate on the 3rd task, our teak deck. We scrapped, sanded and vacuumed, sanded and vacuumed some more for weeks on end, finally reaching a finished stunning new deck that not only improves the appearance of our home into super yacht status, but is a functional, water tight deck. With the new rig arriving into Phuket, the final task of replacing the mast is in full swing and the end of the boatyard is in sight!! As many of you sailors and boaters know Thru-hulls are one of those things that make life so much better yet are always an area of concern. There is no question that it's nicer to have your sink actually drain and suck water up for your watermaker from the inside instead of hauling buckets and having hoses hanging overboard. But what kind of Thru-Hull do you choose? why? and how do you know they won't just break off and create a massive water fountain inside your boat? Petit St. Vincent Petit St. Vincent was a beautiful stop in the Grenadines, just a short sail from Union Island. The highlight? The little sandy spit called MOPION Island with a shade umbrella that made the perfect photo spot. It was quite difficult to get on the island as it’s surrounded by reef and rough waters, but Stephen got on the island while I pulled dinghy watch. And, of course he had to bring a beer. Petit St Vincent is a private resort island, and while you used to be able to go ashore for cocktails and dinner, the recent new ownership has changed that. You can still go ashore, but it costs $150 per person JUST to go ashore. The cost for one overnight in a one bedroom cottage is a mere $1500. So, we just enjoyed the waters. Snorkeling on the south side of the island was a real treat (in the waters between Petit St Vincent and Petit Martinique). Much to the security guards dissatisfaction, a couple onshore struck up a conversation with us and of course, they were from the Carolinas! Snorkeling on the north side was just as nice, but the water was a bit rough, so we didn’t stay long. Petit Martinique The next day, we did a drive by of Petit Martinique, an island known for its fishing and boat building trades with only 900 residents. While actually a part of the Grenadines geographically, it is owned by Grenada. The current in these waters is super strong and at one point, we lost a full knot of speed after crossing a current line. Carriacou Our next stop was a quiet anchorage called Anse Roche in Carriacou, a secluded paradise beach. While a 50 minute hike from the closest road, it is easy to reach by boat. Wonderful snorkeling around the “rocks” and a beautiful beach with Tim’s Lobster BBQ beach bar. After spending hurricane season in Ocean World Marina Puerto Plata DR. We finished the last of our DIY projects in preparation for our first sail of the season off the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. We end up dodging several fishing nets along the way and marked each position to give us a better idea of how far off the coast we should sail. After an overnight passage, we arrived in the early morning hours at Samana Bay. We were enchanted by the beautiful jungle and amazing caves that the Taino lived in before we crossed the Mona passage to Boqueron, Puerto Rico. The trip turned out to be a gorgeous one thanks to the help of the gentlemen’s guide to passages south. We were able to pick a great window and sail the majority of our trip. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. Steve and Robin recently spent some time hiking across northern England, following Alfred Wainwright’s 190-mile-long trail from coast to coast, through three national parks: the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors. The trail can be walked in either direction, though it is most often hiked from west to east—from St. Bees Head to Robin Hood’s Bay. And that’s exactly what they did… The crew consisted of Steve and Robin, Robin’s mom, Wendy, and Robin’s honorary aunt, Debbie. Before beginning their hike, the crew headed down to the beach to dip their boots in the ocean, and choose pebbles that they would carry with them all the way to Robin Hood’s Bay. Once in Robin Hood’s Bay, they would toss the pebble back into the ocean, signifying the end of their journey. Steve and Robin couldn’t help but imagine Arabella anchored off the rocky shoreline of northern England. Sigh. Someday… The first five days of the hike took them through the Lake District, marked by steep, technical climbs and lots of scrambling—but with plenty of breathtaking views to distract them from their burning quads! Steve and Robin broke off from the group to explore some higher summits and narrow ridge lines, and Robin did some even more advanced exploring, visiting the summit of Helvellyn—the third highest summit in the country. After the Lake District came the Yorkshire Dales, where Robin and Steve were able to tour the Richmond Castle. This castle was built sometime around 1100, and is one of the best-preserved early Norman castles in England. Next came the North York Moors, which were exactly what Steve and Robin expected them to be: windy, misty, disorienting, and just a little bit eerie. The Moors definitely lived up to their reputation! Each night, they stayed in quaint villages, at the most hospitable Bed & Breakfasts, eating dinner at the most local of local pubs. The journey was characterized by sheep, sheep, and more sheep, plenty of challenging navigational hurdles, complicated gates, hundreds of miles of stone walls, and just a tad bit of mud…but the weather was uncharacteristically pleasant! They enjoyed panoramic views, endless visibility, sunshine, and friendly temps for almost the whole journey. Almost… The crew arrived together in Robin Hood’s Bay—a town with a rich archeological history—two weeks after starting their journey. There, they dipped their boots in the ocean, tossed their pebbles, and sat down for a well-deserved cup of tea, with scones and clotted cream. With their coast to coast hike behind them, it’s time for Steve and Robin to get back to sailing—it’s time to move Arabella from its winter home in Harwichport, and get going to wherever their next home-for-the-time-being will be.
