The Trust is a charity dedicated to public education, sail training & the preservation, conservation & maintenance of a unique, historic fleet of traditional Broads sailing craft, the boatsheds in which they were built & associated and endagered heritage craft skills Hunter’s Yard lies at the heart of the Norfolk Broads and is the home of our Fleet of 14 traditional cabin yachts lovingly known as ‘Percy’s Lovely Ladies’. We also have 8 half deckers (day boats), which includes 3 Rebels (racing boats) part of only a few available on the Norfolk Broads for hire. Our ‘Lovely Ladies’ were designed specifically to be sympathetic to these beautiful, unique waterways and are available for hire for short breaks to full weeks. All our vintage cabin yachts and half deckers deliver a great sailing experience from our smaller 2 berth (Hustler Class), 3 berth (Wood Class) or our larger 4 berth (Lullaby Class) yachts. Some yachts in our Fleet are now equipped with an electric engine. Hunter’s Yard have pioneered the introduction of electric pod type engines to the fleet to assist with mooring and when going through bridges. Some yachts in the fleet remain engineless so you would need to be an experienced skipper to take one out. Very good dinghy sailors do find our cabin yachts easy and a joy to handle. We’re cruising around Antigua, checking out some amazing views, and hiking through English Harbour. We're anchoring in a smaller anchorage where the winds spin boats 360 degrees and demonstrate how it takes a bit of time to settle in whenever we anchor down in a new spot. We also get some stunning drone shots of the coastline before saying goodbye to the super yachts that line the harbour. While underway to a scenic anchorage, Carlisle Bay, we get into a bit of boat maintenance. Our anchor chain is rusted so we fix it on the move! No mooring buoy or dock slip required. We also share a little DIY with materials we have on hand to stop galvanic corrosion by isolating stainless steel from galvanized metals. Then we test our aluminum boat for stray current using a silver silver chloride electrode to make sure everything’s in check. We’ll show you how we do it and what the results are. We explore more things in Tasmania, outside of Hobart such as the Hastings Caves, Maria Island and a good 17km trek to Cape Raoul. There is so much to see but Maria Island had to be one of our favourites, the history, wombats, Tasmanian Pademelons, Fossil Cliffs and Painted Caves. Join us (and a tree full of pelicans) as we begin cruising east to west on the Okeechobee Waterway. Not many sailboats our size have the ability to cruise the Okeechobee Waterway. Because we are gaff-rigged, our masts are shorter, giving us the clearance we need to pass under the many bridges and power lines along the route. Before we jump into the St. Lucie River from Fort Pierce, Robin tries her hand at dropping the anchor using our windlass. I explain some of the factors I consider when choosing where to drop the anchor, especially in the ICW where sand bars can take you by surprise (as we learned up by Daytona). We do some provisioning in Stuart before jumping aboard and heading into our first of five locks on the Okeechobee. The St. Lucie South Campground, operated by the Army Corps of Engineers, is just past the first lock, and they have a few slips available for cruisers on the Okeechobee. We booked two nights, but Arabella was too big for the slip, so we ended up anchoring with the alligators across the way. The campground showers made paying for a slip worth every penny. Bug-o-clock hits hard in Florida—it’s like something out of a horror movie. We quickly get the bug screens into our portholes to save ourselves (and our skin). After a rainy day, we’re excited to explore the St. Lucie Nature Trails before getting underway again. We make our way to the Port Mayaca lock and into Lake Okeechobee. I finally got to raise the sails and turn off the motor for a while. Lake Okeechobee is filled with beautiful birds, ‘gators, and incredible flora—from Cyprus trees to mangroves. Through the Moore Haven lock (where we leave our mark), we’re officially west of Lake Okeechobee in the Caloosahatchee River. We head to an anchorage called “Lollipop” near the Ortona Lock, taking Victoria through a network of wild canals to the dock at the Ortona Tavern for a bite to eat…and an ice cream sundae. Cruising the Okeechobee Waterway by sailboat is an experience we never expected to have, but are so glad we did.
