The year 2022 starts with a new seasonal job on a Swan 112, in the Caribbean. A busy season, sailing between the islands from Antigua to the BVI, several times. After the winter season an Atlantic crossing to Cascais for maintenance and in July the delivery to Palma. Immediately after that, a delivery of a Swan 66 from Spain to Athens and then a period of time off, due to personal loss and a surgery, until late December, when we started with a Swan 651 from Cartagena to Gran Canaria. 6400 nautical miles added to the total sailed on Swans.

Work on the dodger may be done, but before we can leave Okracoke, we need to install our new Garmin GMI20. The last one died halfway through our passage from Miami to Beaufort, and we had a replacement unit sent to the Okracoke post office. Despite our best efforts to get the original unit working again (and after many calls with Garmin’s support team), we determined it a lost cause. Fortunately, the new unit fired right up and worked like a charm right out of the gates. There was one other last task we had to tackle before leaving Okracoke: decorating the dodger with stickers from our travels. We’ve been picking up stickers everywhere we’ve stopped with the hope of “stickering up” the underside of the dodger, which is well-protected from rain and the sun’s harmful UV rays. It was great to take a walk down memory lane and relive—if just for a moment—the memories we’ve made along our journey so far. With all of our electronics firing—and the dodger newly decorated—we’re ready to head out of Okracoke…and we have a plan. We waited for a calm day, so if we do runaround on another surprise shoal, we won’t have any sort of sea state to deal with. We also pulled up the ferry schedule with the intention of following one through the tricky, turn-y channel…but that plan backfired as the ferry screamed ahead of us and we quickly fell too far behind to actually follow its maneuvers. Safely into Pamlico Sound, we found more wind than what was forecasted and decided to raise the sails. The next day, we found more rain than what was forecasted, and put our foul weather gear on for the first time since our journey south. The next day brought more rain, but we only had about 20 miles to cover—including a few bridges and a lock—to get into Norfolk, VA, where we plan to wait for a weather window to make the passage back north. In Norfolk, we find perhaps our last taste of southern hospitality at the local marina, where access to hot showers, laundry, and a dinghy dock is convenient, affordable, and so very welcomed. And now, we wait for our good friend George to join us for the multi-day offshore passage to Mattapoisett, where we launched Arabella just about two years ago. Talk about bringing things full circle… -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Join us on an epic desert adventure as we walk four days through the Sahara—just us, two camels, our two dogs, and the vast, breathtaking stillness of Morocco’s southern desert. This isn’t a tour. It’s an experience. In this third part of our Morocco road trip series, we leave the last paved road behind and head deep into the Sahara desert. From sleeping in the desert under a blanket of stars to sharing meals at a nomad desert camp, we reflect on the beauty, the silence, and the transformation that comes with walking the desert, step by step. Along the way, we share what it’s really like to go on a 4 day Sahara walk—how the landscape surprised us, how much our dogs loved the freedom, and how this place sparked powerful memories from Floh’s solo desert journey in 2013. This is a story about stillness, about reconnecting with what truly matters, and about two solo stories slowly converging. If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to be out there—just you, the horizon, and nothing else—this is our Sahara experience. Motorsailing to Sorong – Creature Comforts & Crossing Prep! 🌊⚓🍕 We motor sail for 10 hours to our overnight stop on the way to Sorong, where the mission is simple: provision, indulge, and prepare! Our favourite new catchphrase quickly becomes "Two Sorongs don’t make a right"—especially when navigating a bustling town after weeks off-grid. Once in Sorong, we hit the western food spot multiple times for some much-needed creature comforts: think wood-fired pizzas, black bun beef burgers, and plenty of cold drinks. With our bellies full, it’s time to get the boat in order—cleaning, sorting, and organising as we get ready for the big milestone ahead: crossing the equator! Join us on this leg of the journey—it's a mix of hard work, indulgence, and excitement for what's to come. #SailingLife #Sorong #Provisioning #CrossingTheEquator #FamilySailing #BoatLife #SailingAdventure

After years of coaxing our old engine through breakdowns, maintenance struggles, and endless repairs… it’s finally time. 🎉 In this episode, we reveal the engine we’ve chosen to power our off-grid sailing life — and explain exactly why it’s the right fit for our family, our boat, and the remote places we sail to. We’re a family of four (plus our rescue dog Solo), living full-time aboard our ex-Vendée Globe Open 66 — a retired race boat we’ve been transforming into a fast, off-grid home. Every system matters — and this engine upgrade is one we’ve been dreaming about since day one. 🔧 If you’re thinking of re-powering your own boat, or just curious what goes into choosing the right marine engine for long-term cruising, we’re sharing everything we’ve learned along the way. — ⛵ Got questions? Join us as we prepare to leave Georgetown, Bahamas, for a 400-mile sailing adventure to the Dominican Republic! Watch as we change the oil in our diesel engine, generator, and water maker, explore island life at local spots like the Snappy Turtle, and battle rough seas on our journey. Expect honest moments and plenty of nautical tips along the way. Chapters: 0:00 Introduction and engine warm-up 2:15 Diesel engine oil change process 5:30 Water maker oil change 7:00 Dropping off trash and errands in Georgetown 10:00 Visiting the Snappy Turtle bar 13:45 Planning for Dominican Republic travel 15:30 Saying farewells and preparing to sail 18:00 Rough seas and sailing speed updates 21:30 Arrival at Long Island anchorage and swell conditions Blog Post Draft (Detailed Outline / Draft Concept): Preparing for a Long Sailing Passage: Engine Care, Island Life & Rough Seas Preparing for a long journey by sea involves careful maintenance and planning. Leaving Georgetown, Bahamas, with about 400 miles ahead to the Dominican Republic, the first step is making sure the boat’s diesel engine and generator are ready. After about 100 hours, it’s time to change the engine oil to maintain performance. The process starts by warming the engine, then pumping out the old oil using a specialized pump. Proper disposal is important, so the old oil is transferred to a jug for recycling once in port. The water maker’s oil is also changed, using full synthetic oil per manufacturer’s recommendation. Though the water maker holds only a small amount, regular oil changes are essential for keeping it running smoothly. Having the engine located conveniently near the kitchen area has its perks — like easy access to refreshments while working. Once maintenance is done, the day includes a run to town to drop off trash and grab supplies. Exploring Georgetown’s local spots, like the dog-friendly Snappy Turtle bar, adds a lively break. The local drinks, especially fruity cocktails, and island atmosphere make it a memorable experience. Planning ahead for eight months in the Dominican Republic includes renting a car to explore mountains, beaches, and cities like Santiago. This kind of travel offers a new chapter beyond just sailing. At sea, however, things get challenging. The seas proved much rougher than expected, with the boat leaning up to 25 degrees at times. Even with sails and engine working, the rough water caused seasickness. The video shows candid moments of dealing with motion sickness, and the importance of staying calm and watching the horizon helps. Anchoring on the north side of Long Island brought more challenges. The anchorage was very rolly due to swelling water and wind. Things inside the boat were tossed about, creating mess and discomfort. This trip highlights the reality of long passages — thorough preparation, enjoying island life briefly, and facing the unpredictable conditions of the open sea. For anyone planning similar adventures, keeping up with maintenance, planning for downtime, and expecting tough seas will help make the journey safer and more enjoyable. We’re Chris and Jo, an ordinary Aussie couple living our extraordinary dream aboard our Seawind 1260 since January 2019 and now we continue from 2024 aboard our new 1370! Our adventure began with an unforgettable journey down the east coast of Australia, followed by a sail to the stunning New Caledonia. In 2020, we continued our exploration further north, and by 2021 and 2022, we circumnavigated Australia, discovering breathtaking locations along the way. Having previously owned fishing and water-skiing boats, our passion for sailing deepened after crewing in South Australia, leading us to make the leap into full-time living at sea. #PompeDeCale #Voilier #EntretienBateau #RénovationVoilier #DIYBateau #Plaisance #joyenmer #sailinglife

In this second chapter of our Moroccan road trip, we take you from the stunning red rock formations of the Dades Valley all the way to the desert gateway of M’Hamid—sharing the first two of five unexpected moments that truly caught us by surprise. This isn’t the beginning of our journey—we started back in Rabat, made our way through Fes, and hiked the Todra Canyon (check out this part here https://youtu.be/NGAiz61catM). In this episode, we continue south through the vibrant village of Aït Arbi, explore the surreal ‘Monkey Fingers’ rock formations, navigate a canyon hike that felt more like a playground, and wind our way over the snowy peaks of the Anti-Atlas—yes, snow in Morocco! With each turn, Morocco keeps challenging our assumptions, and this leg of the trip reminded us why we travel: for the joy of discovery, the beauty of the unexpected, and the stories waiting in the in-between places. Stick around as we reach the edge of the Sahara and prepare for a four-day desert trek with two dogs, two camels, and two curious humans. Part 2 coming next week! This week, Arabella makes her way to Ocracoke Island, at the south end of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Robin and I have been looking forward to visiting the Outer Banks, and maybe exploring long-abandoned Portsmouth Island. With winds expected to pipe up, we deployed a conservative sail plan for our passage to Ocracoke. Once we were a few miles from Silver Lake harbor, the seas picked up. Navigating a few tricky, skinny sections of channel, Arabella started to hit bottom at the trough of every wave. Thinking quickly, I threw out the jib to heel the boat and slightly reduce our draft. It worked, and we quickly found deeper water…but not for long. We ran up on a sandbar in Nine Foot Shoal channel. Not wanting to get tossed into shallower waters, Robin ran up and dropped the anchor. Fortunately, once the anchor bit, Arabella slipped into deeper water. We decided to spend the night anchored out and wait for the wind and seas to calm down before picking our way into the harbor. In the morning, a local navigated out the channel past us, giving us a better idea of how to safely pick our way through the tricky channel. We made it safely into Silver Lake, dropped the hook, and took a big exhalation. Then we went exploring: Cape Hatteras, Springer Point, Hammock Hills, the public garden, and—of course—the shops around town. We decided to stay put in Ocracoke for a few days while I did some work on the dodger. I needed to reshape her, paint her, and run the solar panel and Starlink cables. This will make our dodger setup slicker (and slimmer) than ever. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. January 6-11, 2021 ------------------------------- Welcome back to another Sailing ELANE episode on the breath-taking Algarve Coast of Portugal, this time in Lagos. Jan 7 – (Praia dos Estudantes Beach, Lagos) We were fascinated by the street art of Lagos, but we were eager to see the spectacular coastline here, too. So, we decided to do the day backwards today…first play (stroll the beach), then work. The beaches weren’t empty only bc of Covid, but bc it was soo cold (48 F/9C)! Don’t-get-hit-by-the-wave Game Grottes de Lagos (Lagos Caves) Jan 8 – Niko’s 11th bday (Ben&Jerry’s Choc Fudge Brownie Ice Cream in bed) Jan 10 (Sun) – Curfew lockdown from 1pm: boys surfing, Liv takes a safety-at-sea course, knitting, oil change (2C) While we wait on both the wind vane and Iridium Go to arrive, Eivind does some maintenance on ELANE to get our vessel in ship-shape for our longest passage yet to the Canary Islands. We’ve been looking forward to the Canaries since Departure Day from Norway. So, this being our next stop gave us hope in the face of the Covid curfew and lockdown. While awaiting the arrival of both the wind vane and Iridium Go, Eivind does some maintenance on ELANE to ensure our vessel is in optimal condition for our upcoming long passage to the Canary Islands. We have eagerly anticipated reaching the Canaries since our departure from Norway. So, knowing that it is our next destination keeps the morale up amidst the Covid-induced curfew and lockdown. Jan 11 (11C) – boys go boarding for gym class + Daddy instructs Aksel how to use harpoon gun Aksel had some creative solutions to install the Iridium Go Antenna. Daddy was glad for the help! Teamwork! Check out our next episode where we find diesel bugs in our newly changed oil tank, explore more of the spectacular coastline and visit the charming, neighboring coastal town of Portimao. Another 2 weeks goes by before we are ready to cast off the lines for off-shore sailing, with no possibility of return! Stay tuned! Cheers, ELANE ______________________________ CREDITS: Movavi Video Suite 2025 Epidemic Sound Beatleap Videoleap Photos: https://www.pbo.co.uk/
Back on the boat for Episode 2, and things are already getting interesting… I found about a gallon of water sitting behind the front bulkhead up in the bow. Definitely not what I was hoping to see this early on. In this video, I take a closer look at the bow area and try to figure out where that water is coming from — could be rain, a leaky fitting, or something worse. No idea yet, but we’ll start digging. Also got to play with a few new tools I’ve picked up for the refit, which definitely made things a bit more fun (and a bit more chaotic). This refit’s turning into more of an adventure than I expected, but I’m here for it. If you’ve had water issues like this or just enjoy following boat projects, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Thanks for being here. More to come. #SailboatRefit #BoatLife #DIYBoatProjects #ColvicUFO27 #BoatRestoration #SailingJourney
