#sailingfamily #familyvlog #sailingaroundtheworld #familytravelvlog #boatlife #bucketlist #lifestyle #travel #sailboat We LEAVE Indonesia to Sail Across the Indian Ocean to Christmas Island Getting ready for the next leg of our journey, we tackle some essential boat maintenance. This episode features some DIY boat repairs and marine maintenance to ensure our marine engine is ready for open water. We check out of Indonesia and begin the first leg of our Indian Ocean crossing to Christmas Island. We are a suburban blended family that has raised our 3 older children and now want to travel the world. After planning and saving for the past 6 years, we are now embracing our dream of sailing around the world on our Leopard 45 sailing catamaran. Follow our journey as we Circumnavigate the Globe in 3-4 years on a budget of $4,800/month (food, communication, fuel, insurance, transportation, mooring/marina & fun). We left the USA in October 2023 and plan to visit 26 countries on 5 different continents all while worldschooling a budding teen in our off grid tiny house. 🏆 Looking for boating spreadsheets, inside info or wanna help keep the dream alive? Welcome to Part 2 of our structural nightmare! 🚢 After days of attempts, we finally found the definitive solution for the uneven and crooked deck. In this episode, the welder and I take a deep dive into the correction, using relief cuts and an ingenious aluminum "shrinking" technique to relieve the plate's tension and force it into the correct position. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. My DIY project continues. Lots of sanding is required to prepare Celinas hull for the osmosis treatment. Luckily her hull was dry to the bone and no osmosis was detected. To keep it this way I closed all holes and cracks with thickened epoxy and applied five layers of Gel-Shield 200. Antifouling protection was applied afterwards using Hempels Silic One biocide free fouling release system. To be continued...
This week aboard Chasing Serenity was a perfect mix of cruising chaos and family fun. After plugging into a shore power pedestal wired incorrectly, part of our electrical system fried, forcing us to chase down faults and rebuild the connection. We also fixed our boom-crane lift for the dinghy and straightened the bent side rail from last week’s sail disaster. Between repairs, we slow down to enjoy boat-life moments with the kids — cooking, fishing, and celebrating Halloween in Charleston! 🎃⚓ Join us for another week of real liveaboard life — a mix of maintenance, parenting, and the magic that comes with raising a family on the water. The crew experiences a cold front in Florida and attempts to sell their 24-volt Amper Time LiFePO4 batteries, a less common voltage. They participate in the Bootkey Harbor Cruisers Radio Net, a community broadcast for sailors. A visit to a monthly swap meet to sell their batteries proves largely unsuccessful. The video also details boat maintenance, including replacing an AC outlet. A cooking segment features a feta cheese pasta recipe. Later, the crew works on removing paint and rust from boat components using specialized products. They attend a Bahamas meeting to prepare for their trip and acquire new electrical panels and primers. Additionally, they assist a fellow sailor with mast repairs and discover a mysterious light underwater. A major focus is the significant progress on their wind generator project, where they plan to install two wind generators:)

Howdy folks — Mark here from Nomad Boatbuilding! Today I’m tackling one of the hardest jobs in wooden boatbuilding: fiberglassing a glued-lapstrake hull. Using WEST SYSTEM epoxy, fiberglass tape, and peel ply, I test a new approach to strengthen the bottom of a lapstrake boat destined for rocky beaches and mooring wear. You’ll see how I: Apply fiberglass tape plank by plank Use peel ply for a smoother, faster finish Mix, roll, and trim epoxy cleanly Learn a few lessons along the way (including a late-night mistake!) We’re in the Wrangell, Alaska shipyards with Alaskan Gypsy, our 80-foot steel motor-sailer under full restoration. The weather’s cold, the fairing compound won’t cure without heat, and my big diesel furnace rental quit—so I pulled this new Vevor portable diesel heater straight out of the box and put it to work. This isn’t a studio review; it’s a real-world torture test. I run the heater nonstop for a full week in a drafty paint tent, measure temps, fuel burn, and reliability, and share what I actually think of it after living with it. Full disclosure - Vevor sent me this heater at no charge, but I have purchased quite a variety of their products before including an earlier model portable diesel heater that I intended to install on our first steel motor-sailer. I haven't installed it yet because I started using it as portable heat on my job sites warming things like the tool shed and the sauna I was building... I didn't want to leave it on the boat it worked so good. Vevor has set up some links for the heater, and other options and a 5% off code. If you have any questions about the heater please comment below. After months away, we finally sailed back to our second home — Banderas Bay — where all the magic happened last season. From cold beers and dancing at our friends’ newly renamed bar #LustyOnLand, to experiencing Puerto Vallarta’s Rhythms of the Night for @BreakingWavesSailing Ben's birthday -- this was one unforgettable homecoming. Join our salty crew as we reunite with old friends, revisit favorite haunts (yes, that birria place), and celebrate in true cruiser style — with music, laughter, and a few too many cervezas. 🌮🍻⛵ I have a few articles about La Cruz published, but check out this one about Lusty on Land: https://latsatts.com/lusty-on-land/?srsltid=AfmBOor9ejX_r0preefIb1YEk2NrAI0sotV-WAn8djq7y64bYUc_f6v8 Read the blog: https://www.svavocet.com/2024/04/23/back-to-lusty-land/ Don't miss out on upcoming sailing adventures, DIY stories, and equipment reviews! This week aboard Arabella in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Steve takes on a cozy mission while Robin is away: Mission: Warm Robin. With winter closing in and temperatures dropping fast, it’s the perfect time to prep both the boat and a special surprise for her birthday. First, a quick fix for the Dickinson diesel heater, sealing up a small exhaust leak that’s been marking the cabin overhead with soot. Then it’s on to something a bit more personal: crafting handmade winter gear using traditional and sustainable materials sourced in Canada: moose leather, beaver fur, coyote, and seal skin. Over the course of a few days, Steve designs and stitches a full set of cozy accessories: fur-lined slippers, beaver-and-coyote overmitts, and a coyote muff, all made by hand aboard the boat. The result? A heartfelt, one-of-a-kind gift to help Robin stay warm aboard Arabella, and out in the backcountry this winter. Join us for this heartwarming mix of DIY craftsmanship, boat maintenance, and life aboard in the North Atlantic. 🔧 In This Episode: • Fixing a small smoke leak in the diesel heater exhaust • Using high-temp silicone sealant for safe stove maintenance • Designing & sewing fur slippers and mitts by hand • Exploring traditional materials from Newfoundland’s Indigenous artisans • Gift reveal: Robin’s reaction to the handmade winter set -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! PG caught up with Andreas, Export Manager for Quick Group, to talk all things gyros, global adoption, and why more shipyards — from Europe to the U.S. — are making the switch. Standing alongside @axopar @nimbusboats @fjordboats_official and @iconyachts — Andreas shared how brands across the board are fitting Quick Gyros as standard. Even on the @maritimomotoryachts stand, two of the three vessels on display are running Quick systems — with no gyro fitted to the third. Why the shift? ✅ Smaller footprint ✅ Air-cooled (no water pumps or secondary systems) ✅ Lower maintenance ✅ Proven performance ✅ Global dealer support Less complexity. More control. That’s why @quickitaly is the fastest-growing gyro brand in the world. Need help speccing the right gyro for your vessel? Talk to the Gineico team. Sailing my 2010 Precision 18 sailboat in unpredictable mid-day winds on a beautiful Rocky Mountain lake. This episode highlights some of the challenges of sailing on a high-altitude mountain lake: unreliable forecasts, frequent wind direction changes, flukey up and down wind speeds, sudden gusts, and lots of frustration. The episode also features plenty of nature, blue alpine skies, gorgeous mountain views and sailing sounds. Subscribe and follow @ColoradoSailing on YouTube for more original sailing videos, gear, boat maintenance, sailing tips and travel content as I sail my Precision 18 trailer sailer and Precision 16 sailing dinghy in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. #sailing #lakesailing #mountainsailing #saillife #sailingchannel #coloradosailing
Last week at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, PG caught up with Daniel from Quick USA outside the SŌLACE display — a standout example of American boatbuilding. With a major competitor dominating the U.S. market, it was a chance to talk candidly about what’s changing — and why more American owners are choosing Quick Gyros. According to Daniel, it’s simple: Air-cooled. Smaller footprint. Less maintenance. No water pumps. No over-complication. Just pop the top, re-grease, and you’re done. And the performance? Adaptive precession, computer-monitored precision, and serious stability. Quick Gyros are gaining ground for all the right reasons. https://zurl.co/v2Zd2 @sydneyinternationalboatshow #quick @quickitaly @quickusa_official @solaceboats #gineico_Marine #quickitaly #quickgyro #quickgyrostabiliser #Yachts #Superyacht #marineaccessories #experience #madeinitaly #virtualshowroom #production #nauticalequipment #accessories #yacht #boat #lifestyle #luxury #elegance #italydesign #gyro #stabilizer

My supervisor is watching me. It turns me on and is hard to keep my manhood from responding. I love peeling tape off of a newly painted surface. Forever working on Isabella. It's satisfying but a little too much sometimes. Watching Karen polish the stainless steel is certainly fun for me and she enjoys how it shines afterwards. LED lights last a long time but also fail prematurely. Replacing with a WaveOne multi-color light certainly brightens up the salon. More maintenance. We're trying to trace down a very subtle leak. We know there is one because our accumulator is working properly and our water pump comes on to refill it even when a faucet is not being used. What is an accumulator? Fresh water systems on a boat include a holding tank, a water pump, and a device to reduce the amount of time the pump runs when using water. This is the job of an accumulator. Ours is a 2 gallon tank with a pressurized diaphragm. This enables the ability to turn on a faucet without the pump running every time. We certainly need a better storage system for pots and pans. Digging out our wok takes a bit of time but the stir fry we make with it is worth the effort. Thanks for subscribing! Free Nav Rules Course - https://www.nauticed.org/powerboating-courses/view/navigation-rules-for-powerboats?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=lSg1tKSKTEk New England Propeller - https://neprop.com Prop strike after hitting a rock or the bottom? This guide explains why you should NOT DIY a prop repair and what to do next. The damage you can’t see—pitch shift, blade alignment, balance/runout—can quickly lead to vibration, lower-unit wear (outboard/sterndrive), or cutlass-bearing damage (inboard). Home tools can’t measure pitch/balance accurately; a professional prop shop uses pitch blocks, runout gauges, and balancing equipment and provides before/after reports so you know it’s right. What we cover: - Don’t DIY: Grinding material off a blade makes imbalance and weakens the prop - Hidden damage: Pitch moved, blade alignment off, hub issues—even if it looks “okay” Inspect after a strike: - Outboard/IO: prop, edges, hub, lower unit (leaks, noise, metal in oil) - Inboard: prop, shaft, strut, rudder, cutlass bearing (play/heat) - Aluminum vs stainless: Aluminum with big metal missing is often not cost-effective to repair Stainless is pricier and more repairable—worth professional work - Twin props: If one looks bent, “just check” the other—often both need work - Fix it promptly: Running with vibration accelerates wear and raises costs - What a shop does: Measure pitch, correct alignment, true & balance; provide pre/post reports Quick After-Strike Checklist: Stop DIY ideas—no hammers, torches, or grinding Visual check: nicks, bends, cracks, missing edge, cup/rake distortion Spin test: obvious wobble/runout at blade tips Lower unit / seal check (OB/IO): new drips, milky/metallic oil, noise Inboard gear: shaft straightness, strut alignment, cutlass bearing play Bring it in: ask the prop shop for measurement + balance and a report FAQ Can I repair a bent boat prop at home? No. Without pitch blocks and balancing, you risk worse vibration and drivetrain damage. How do I know if my prop is too damaged to fix? Large metal loss on aluminum is often a replace call. Stainless can usually be repaired by a shop. What symptoms show hidden prop/shaft damage? New vibration bands, loss of WOT RPM, leaks at seals, heat at cutlass bearing, metal in gear oil. Why fix it quickly after a prop strike? Running out of balance stresses the lower unit, bearings, seals, and mounts, increasing repair costs. 00:00 - Intro 00:16 - Fixing it Yourself 00:39 - Vibration Wear 00:57 - After Strike Checklist 01:10 - How Damaged is To Damaged 01:33 - Damage You Can't See 02:09 - Outro #powerboat #boating #boat
Today’s project on Alaskan Gypsy in the shipyard is a deep dive into the practical reality of welding new through-hulls in a steel sailboat hull. Our first project is cutting out and welding in a plug plate to cleanly remove on old abandoned through hull. We then install two new through-hulls in a new section of plate we installed in an earlier episode. I prep, fit, and weld in new schedule 80, and schedule 40 standpipes — each one beveled, aligned, and burned in with 6011 roots and 7018 cover passes. This episode walks through every stage of the process: A little hole saw trick for a template jig to plug an abandoned through hull. Marking the hull, cutting the pilot holes, setting up for overhead welds, checking penetration, grinding and cleaning, and finishing the exterior for primer. Along the way, I talk about amperage choices, puddle control, heat management, and a few of the surprises that come with working under a 55-ton steel schooner. It’s not glamorous, but it’s the kind of work that keeps an old ship alive. This true story, and dozens more like it, are in my book Be The Captain 👉 https://www.bethecaptain.com This is a true sailing story about what happens when a solo sailor falls asleep offshore. I’ve been through two different boat crashes, both from fatigue, and each taught me hard lessons about seamanship, preparation, and the realities of sailing offshore. If you’ve ever wondered what happens when you fall asleep while sailing, or how to prevent it, this is a story you need to hear. 🗺 About Be The Captain It’s not a sailing book — it’s a captain’s manual for real life at sea. Every chapter is drawn from thousands of miles offshore, from heavy weather to leadership, anchoring, maintenance, and self-reliance. If you connected with this story, you’ll find the whole system in Be The Captain. 📘 Get your copy here → bethecaptain.com
Howdy folks — Mark here from Nomad Boatbuilding. Wooden boatbuilders are often called craftsmen, artists, or engineers — but most days, I feel more like a problem solver. In this video, I tackle a tricky challenge: fiberglassing a glued-lapstrake wooden hull using WEST SYSTEM epoxy products. Lapstrake planking has deep ridges and overlaps that make traditional fiberglassing nearly impossible. My solution? Applying fiberglass tape to each plank individually and finishing it with peel ply (release fabric) to speed up the process and improve the finish. Along the way, I share: ⚓ How to use WEST SYSTEM 105 Resin and 207 Hardener for glassing ⚓ Why fiberglass tape beats cloth for lapstrake hulls ⚓ The benefits of peel ply for smooth, sand-ready finishes ⚓ Tips for mixing, applying, and trimming epoxy cleanly ⚓ Lessons learned the hard way (like forgetting to trim before full cure 😅) This method made the job faster, cleaner, and more durable — perfect for boats that live on a mooring or get hauled up on rocky beaches. If you enjoy traditional boatbuilding, epoxy work, and creative problem-solving in the shop, you’ll love this one. 💡 WEST SYSTEM Epoxy Resources 👉https://www.westsystem.com/ for manuals, selection guides, and tech support. ⚙️ SUPPORT THE CHANNEL 👍 Like • 💬 Comment • 🔔 Subscribe • 💙 Join me on Patreon. https://www.patreon.com/nomadboatbuilding #Boatbuilding #WoodenBoats #Fiberglassing #Lapstrake #Epoxy #WestSystem #NomadBoatbuilding #BoatRestoration #Woodworking #Sailing #MaritimeCraftsmanship #DIYBoatbuilding
It means a lot to us. ❤️😘❤️ Musical Attributes: Daniel Gunnarsson - The Storm Inside Par 50's - You Shine on Me You can also follow us: https://linktr.ee/sailingintermission #SailingCouple #dancing #wok #manhood #BoatLife #Mikado56 #SailingIntermission #maintenance

This week aboard our sailboat was all about progress — tackling a mix of big and small refit projects to keep our boat seaworthy and ready for adventure! 🔧 Project 1: We measured for new sheaves in the boom and mast, and for new turnbuckles and jaws for our standing rigging — important steps toward a smoother and safer rig. 📡 Project 2: We mapped out the path and measured the VHF cable run, crawling through deck lockers and under the nav desk to trace every inch. 💧 Project 3 (The Big One): A leaking valve repair turned into a major fiberglass project. Working in tight spaces, we cut out the old valve and glassed in a new fiberglass tube. Using a balloon to apply pressure kept epoxy under control — messy but effective! The leak is finally sealed, and the job’s done. 🚰 Project 4: We continued the PEX plumbing installation for the freshwater system into the galley — another step toward completing the refit. After a week of hard work, fiberglass dust, and plenty of crawling into tight spaces, it feels great to see real progress on the boat. Entre temps, le vent est revenu 🙌🏼 🇳🇿🇺🇸 // “Some prisons don’t have walls, just a wide blue sky…” 🌤️ A real emotional rollercoaster this morning aboard MSIG Europe. Trapped in a high pressure bubble, Conrad and Mathieu found themselves completely swallowed by a windless zone. Not a breath, not a knot, just a stunning sunrise, which somehow became (almost) frustrating for two competitors like them… 😅 So they made the most of it: a first shower in a week, a bit of rest, and some maintenance work to “bring a fresh perspective for the next stretch of their adventure.” And the good news? The wind is finally back! 🌬️💪🏼 Social medias : Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/conradcolmanoceanracing Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/conradcolman

In this episode of we cruise into Halifax, Nova Scotia, one of Canada’s most historic and vibrant coastal cities! We start by exploring the northwest arm of Halifax, checking out the viable anchorage spots for cruisers and liveaboards. Then we tie up at what might just be on the most rolly dock we’ve ever been on — seriously, it was wild! 😂 After securing the boat, we head ashore to explore downtown Halifax, do some shopping, and pick up a brand new drone for epic aerial footage. We spend the next couple of days soaking up Halifax’s waterfront attractions, taking a self-guided historical building tour, and (of course) enjoying amazing local food. From drone practice over the harbor to wandering the charming waterfront, this episode is packed with classic boat life adventures in Atlantic Canada. Guest stars: Larry, Beth, Willie, and Pebbles. If you’re dreaming of living on board a Nordhavn or buying a Nordhavn for bluewater cruising, this video offers a firsthand look at the challenges and rewards of long-term boat life. We’ll take you behind the scenes to see how we manage real-life boating situations—from maintenance issues to steering failures—and offer tips for anyone planning to live aboard or buy a Nordhavn. In this video, we’re taking on a whole new boat project, as we start to build custom carbon fiber tables for our catamaran. Since our old rear cockpit table was another warranty fail, and the upstairs one is less than impressive, we decided to do some boat DIY and make new tables. Instead of teak or fiberglass, we've gone carbon fiber and foam, designed to be lightweight, strong, and perfectly suited for life at sea. You’ll see how we shape the foam cores, reinforce the hinge areas, and prep everything for a flawless carbon layup. One table folds neatly away to save space, while the other features a custom, non-standard shape designed specifically for coach-roof. 👉 SUPPORT THE STORY TELLING ⛵ Gain access to our member only area: https://www.travelsketchsailing.com/join-in 😎 Tip jar: https://buy.stripe.com/6oE8A1d9Yabj4OA9AB After backpacking Asia, road tripping Europe and doing a bit of van life, we’re now exploring the world aboard our Leopard 45 catamaran. In this episode of Sailing Astrid the Wombat, we’re breaking down the real haul out costs and sailboat maintenance expenses involved in getting our boat ready to sail around the world. Whether you’re a future liveaboard sailor, a current boat owner, or just curious about the true costs of sailing life, this video dives deep into the dollars and details behind our latest haul out. We’ve spent months preparing our 1990 Beneteau Oceanis 430 — Astrid the Wombat — for blue water adventures, and this haul out was a major milestone. From antifouling paint to through-hull replacements, prop maintenance, and bottom cleaning, we reveal exactly what it costs to haul out a 43-foot sailboat and make her ocean-ready. We’ll walk you through each step of the process: lifting the boat out of the water, inspecting the hull, replacing worn fittings, and tackling those essential upgrades every liveaboard cruiser eventually faces. If you’ve ever wondered, “How much does it cost to maintain a sailboat?” or “What does a boatyard haul out actually involve?” — this episode has the answers. This transparent cost breakdown includes both DIY sailboat projects and professional boatyard services, showing you where you can save money and where it’s worth paying for expert help. It’s a must-watch for anyone planning long-term cruising, full-time liveaboard life, or simply trying to budget for their next sailing adventure.
