Determined to make the absolute best of perfect morning conditions in Barcelona, Alinghi Red Bull Racing came out with their AC40 and put on a display that made the America’s Cup world sit up and take notice. It was near perfection from Arnaud Psarofaghis and Nicolas Charbonnier who barely put a move wrong and oh so very nearly recorded a 100% day on the manoeuvres foil-to-foil. Just one touch & go blotted the record over 24 tacks and gybes but it was brilliance on display as a southerly ‘Garbi’ wind brought in a decent 13-16 knots that is just ideal for the AC40. Shoreside at Alinghi Red Bull Racing, some notable senior management was in town to celebrate the 25-year anniversary of superstar rigger João Cabeçadas joining Ernesto Bertarelli’s sailing teams across the America’s Cup, TF35, GC32 and many other classes that the Alinghi and Alinghi Red Bull Racing teams have competed in over the years. João is one of the legends of the America’s Cup with this being his fifth campaign and he was more than impressed with what he saw on the water today (Wednesday) saying: “I think it was really, really, good. It was windy, we performed well we did kind of 100% dry which is one thing on these boats! We had our goals to achieve on testing, we did them all, checked every box came back with the boat in one piece and the crew in one piece.” Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024

With six crew positions, three either side, on their LEQ12 prototype, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli have serious options to bring in new crew-members, upskill the young talent that the team are deeply committed to fostering and on occasion give the ride of their life to design or engineering team members. Today out in Cagliari in an afternoon breeze that just built and built, it was the turn of Gwenolè Bernard, Head of Soft Wing Systems and Nicolas Carabelli from the Aero Analysis team to get a new perspective on life above the waves at eye-popping speeds. Speaking afterwards Gwenolè Bernard gave an insightful interview and a glimpse into the design world saying: “I think it was a really good day. We are lucky to have a boat where we can bring guests and we were two lucky guys from the design team to be able to go onboard. So at the start, the day was quite light which was good for us to start like that and then as you can see we finished with a good sea breeze and the sea state increasing so yeah was a was really nice, very interesting and quite dynamic….I think the main idea of this kind of ride is to take us out of our computer world where maybe sometimes everything is a bit easier and understand what problems we can face while sailing. And, if I speak for myself, look at how people are acting on the sail and the control of the speed as well for the dynamic phase and I was ready to try to get a bit our head out and really get closer to the sailor’s feeling and understand better their need and why they are struggling in some areas and really trying to get better, merging what we have from the theory to what really we can see on the water.” Section 41. Keen to test themselves and the new W-Foil in the upper wind ranges, INEOS Britannia were greeted today with big mistral winds and a building waveform on the Bay of Palma and elected for a long tow round to the west off Portals Marina to find flatter water and a solid breeze that touched 18 knots at times. This was a day to push hard and with Ben Ainslie and Ben Cornish on the helm, replaced later in the session by Giles Scott, with Luke Parkinson and Iain Jensen on trim and flight control, this was the race team at race pace, with no compromises. Speaking afterwards Team Coach Xavi Fernandes was pretty calm about the situation saying: “Well again we pushed through the day more and more, we were quite conscious at the beginning and just making sure to take care of the gear and then you push more and more and you get a bit more into racing scenarios and one mistake here, one mistake there but I think everything was okay, we did a kind of a jump but nothing broken we kept sailing so it was good… I think it was quite the spectacular, but it didn't hit very hard the water when it came down and you know they didn't report any noises. Of course, it will be checked and all the floor area, but I think it was all good.” Section 41. In the world of the America’s Cup, it’s all too easy to get distracted with rival teams unveiling new technology, sailing styles and different training regimes. Staying focussed on the controllable takes strong leadership and the New York Yacht Club American Magic team has that in abundance. After a relatively shaky launch and commissioning of the team’s newly upgraded starboard foil on Monday, modifications were completed overnight and it was the turn of the sailors to start hitting the performance profile. They didn’t disappoint. In a remarkably frank interview after sailing, Tom Slingsby opened up about the programme, playing down the team’s expected top billing after a brilliant winter of testing in Florida. When asked about whether he felt they had an edge, Tom endearingly offered: “Do I feel we have an edge? Honestly not really. I think that every team is probably going to be strong in some areas. I mean New Zealand have been out two-boat testing these boats and had the boats for a lot longer than anyone so it would be stupid of me to say that I think we would be pretty fast in a one design AC40 because they've got a lot more experience than us. I actually don't know how everyone else is going we've just got our checklist and we're chipping away and trying to get some good design feedback for designing our race boat.” Section 41. It was a day that didn’t promise much but delivered on several fronts for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli on this, day two, of their commissioning of the new port foil that they revealed and declared on the 6th April. With Jimmy Spithill back in Cagliari, it was a day of short course sailing at race pace with the enigmatic Australian putting the hammer down and extracting maximum meaningful data whilst rifling through a variety of light air modes to give the design and engineering teams plenty to be happy about. Speaking afterwards, Jimmy Spithill, always a compelling interviewee, gave a superb run down of the day saying: “Yeah it was a great little breeze. Initially all the models showed that the mistral would spite the sea breeze and we weren't convinced we were going to get much in but as it turned out I was kind of 6 to 9 knots all day and really good sailing…just getting a bit more time on the wing and in those conditions, it was just a great opportunity to do some laps and sort of test that kind of downrange gybing and manoeuvring. A few times we got caught in some light air and the guys are doing a good job in being able to survive a few of them and yeah, it's just good to go round the marks as then you have the pressure of the boundary and having to pull off a manoeuvre.” 'Section 41. INEOS Britannia’s upward trajectory continued today with an entertaining light airs session out on the Bay of Palma that saw the team rifling through an intensive test schedule and looking remarkably comfortable all round on ‘T6’ the ‘silver bullet’ LEQ12 prototype. Flight was stable, manoeuvres were slick, windward heel was induced both upwind and down, and the sailors looked the most assured since the team introduced the W-Foil concept on their starboard foil arm on the 21st March. Iain Jensen in the starboard pod, controlling the W-Foil, was observed looking over the side frequently, gauging the performance profile of the foil and as he confirmed afterwards was using a visual to hit “target ride height.” The recon team also noted multiple board drops of the starboard foil arm in flight to windward with Jensen watching the immersion with interest at different cant angles. It’s abundantly clear that INEOS Britannia feel that they are onto something very interesting with the foil concept, something they trialled in the 2021 America’s Cup, and are looking better and better on it as the data gathering sessions progress. New York Yacht Club American Magic declared their fourth iteration (D) of the starboard foil that they’ve been modifying and upgrading every five to six days since revealing it on the 18th March 2023. Having experienced issues just before the Easter break it was perhaps no surprise to see that the fairing just above the lower foil arm had been replaced with an aero banding wrapped around, presumably housing the technical actuator mechanism used to control the foil flaps but it was a short day of tow-testing and commissioning as the team push on with foil development and rig set-up ahead of confirming their designs for the team’s AC75 that is shortly to go into build. Speaking afterwards, Anderson Reggio one of American Magic’s on-water performance analysts confirmed that today was tough saying: it was a short day…we had a couple of days off making some changes to a number of settings on the boat. We didn't need a long one today to just go out and validate the settings and as you guys saw it was a little unstable at times but we learned what we needed to learn and we can make the adjustments that we need to make for another day of sailing tomorrow.” Section 41. On November 9th, 1913, SS Henry B. Smith left Marquette, Michigan as a blizzard ravaged Lake Superior. She would go on to be one of 19 ships lost in the Great Lakes Storm of 1913, also commonly called the White Hurricane. The decision to leave port that day and what happened in her final moments has baffled researchers for decades. In 2013, her long-lost wreck was finally discovered only a few miles from where she began her voyage, shedding some light on the tragedy that claimed the lives of 25 sailors. In today's episode, we'll look into some of the most affordable cruising or sailing catamarans on the market. This is an update on our past video on multihull sailing yachts, and we’ll talk about design features, performance numbers, and the ideal price range, so be sure to watch until the end to see our top pick! Catamarans come in a wide range of sizes and styles. However, when you're on a budget, it's recommended to stick with the average price of around 250,000 to 500,000 US dollars brand new. Cruising catamarans, in particular, can reach up to 45 or 50 feet as they are designed for long-distance travel. Section 41.

Our favorite thing about this lifestyle is the ability to live in wild and remote parts of the planet. The feeling of waking up in our own home and yet surrounded by wilderness is indescribable, and has been the main driving force behind all of our efforts. But in order for us to release weekly episodes we need to be in a place that has relatively fast and reliable internet, something that is hard to come by when sailing in remote areas. So heading off grid and then rushing back to civilization has always been a challenging balancing act for us. But all of that is about to change... There’s something in the air around INEOS Britannia at the moment as the team push ever harder with ‘T6’ their LEQ12 prototype and just look better and better, oozing confidence in the platform and thoroughly enjoying the process. Today (Wednesday) the sailors had a mammoth, productive session flying around to the east of the Bay of Palma, seeking waves and wind to really get to grips with the new rig set-up, modes and of course, the much talked about W-Foil. Speaking afterwards, Bleddyn Mon who is such a vital link between the sailors and engineers, gave a terrific interview with the recon team and summed the day up brilliantly saying: “It was a perfect day out there, kind of medium-strong sea breeze and great conditions for us testing and actually able to get a variety of sea states across the Bay…we had a few design related tests to do in the first part of the session, kind of testing at various boat speeds and pitch angles and cant angles and then later in the day it was more kind of VMG sailing and exploring sailing the boat in a bit more sea state so we headed out to the east of the Bay.” Section 41. Emirates Team New Zealand completed a vital day of light airs training out in Auckland with ‘Te Rehutai’, the team’s much modified AC75, seeking down-range maximum power in a breeze that struggled to get above 8 knots all throughout the afternoon. After sailing, a stoked Scott Barnes talked to the recon team specifically about his area of hydraulics and speaking about the pump system he said: “It's a one design component for all the teams, the pump for the cyclors, so all the teams will have the same kit…we have got a different setup of cylinders on the boat because now the boats don’t have runners, you’re moving different displacements around, but you know it's all the same sort of principle…There are different displacements you can choose…there’s a huge range that you can cater for your own design. (Higher volume lower pressure and vice versa – as noted by the recon team). The rule is 600 BAR in the sailing circuit, which is quite high as a maximum so all the teams will be pushing that I guess???there’s a class accumulator which is titanium and yeah that’s pushing the boundaries too.” Section 41. Sir Jim Ratcliffe was on the water in Palma today to witness a sensational training session of ‘T6’, the British team’s LEQ12 test platform, as Ben Ainslie and Giles Scott pushed it to the outer limits. At times, T6 looked almost supersonic as they rocketed around the Bay hitting mid-30 knots upwind and well into 40 knot barrier downwind and had the innovative W-Foil really performing to its profile. Luke Parkinson is one of the key flight controllers for INEOS Britannia who brings a wealth of foiling talent and long experience to this America’s Cup campaign. Speaking afterwards he gave a terrific interview with the recon team who dug into the differences that he can feel between the foil designs: “It's definitely an interesting concept and there's a lot of pros and cons to it. It's something that we looked at last Cup and the designers wanted to look at it again. I guess it's just different junction heights that’s really the big thing but there's different angles and forces going on so there’s a fair bit of interesting things…Each foil is always different depending on a T or a W or the albatross like the Team New Zealand one. They all have different little features to refine the window of where you fly them to get their performance.” Section 41. If there’s one thing we are learning this week from recon units all over the world, it’s that AC40’s in big swell require a huge amount of technique and skill to keep upright and flying fast. Today out in Barcelona with wave heights estimated at around 1.5 metres, Alinghi Red Bull Racing had the AC40 rocking and rolling with a new crew formation onboard, especially downwind, where they wrestled with ride height to keep the foils immersed. They did a brilliant job. After sailing, the recon team caught up with double America’s Cup winner Nils Frei who is such a calming influence on the team and brimming with experience. It’s a rare interview and Nils is happy with how Alinghi Red Bull Racing have progressed in eight short months saying: “Time is flying and we're flying better and better as well so that's good. A lot of things going on, obviously first we learned to sail the AC75 and so we had really good months last year in the Autumn and then now since a couple of weeks or a couple of months already sailing with the first AC40, so yes, it's been really interesting. So many things have happened - the crew has evolved a lot too, we had a lot of crew swaps as well, doing a lot of rotations, so I think it's coming together nicely.” Section 41. The Regal 2665 is a great Sports Cruiser that could be your perfect step up to something you can stay on overnight. Coming in at just under 9meters you would be forgiven for thinking it's a little on the snug side, but with two double berths and a very sociable cockpit its a great (and economical) way to extend your cruising grounds. Take a look aboard with Jason and let us know what you think of this cracking boat! Huge thanks to the team at Clipper Marine Swanwick for access to the boat, for more information Tel: +44(0)1489 550 583 Email: sales@clippermarine.co.uk Website: www.clippermarine.co.uk Please Like, Share and Subscribe to The Marine Channel, so we can keep growing and bring you more great videos, thanks!

An unspecified and highly unusual below-decks gear breakage curtailed Emirates Team New Zealand’s second day of training this week aboard ‘Te Rehutai’ in Auckland on Tuesday. The team were out for just under an hour before calling it a day but some superb footage came back from the recon unit up close on flat water and highlighting just how comfortable the Kiwis are getting with the boat that they nickname “the big school bus.” Simon van Velthooven, one of the super-fit power group of Emirates Team New Zealand summed it up brilliantly after sailing saying: “Yeah we’re starting throw it around a bit more now and probably the G-forces feel like it was pre-racing here in Auckland. Everyone is getting more comfortable in the ‘big school bus’ and yeah I'm just obviously excited for the further upgrades and further refinement and really starting to rip into it.” Section 41.
