We weigh anchor and go sailing downwind from Egg Island all the way to Hoffmans Cay in the Berry Islands. This may be the shortest video we've ever made, but I hope the effort that went into it is apparent. Basically all the footage ended up being really windy and splashy which hurt the audio... so I made a music video out of it. :) In this video you'll see our 52ish mile crossing from Egg Island to Hoffmann's Cay - or from Eleuthera to the Berry Islands. Not a bad trip. Dead downwind all the way. It's times like these that I kinda wish we hadn't ditched our whisker pole, but at the same time, I still don't think it would have been worth hauling it around for the 2-3 times it would have come in handy. You should never judge a shipyard by the appearance of the yacht though - certainly not where custom yachts are concerned - since they are really more of a reflection of the designer than the builder. She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. I continued hiking New York through Harriman State Park. I stayed with friends and later visited the New York Ren Faire. I set off to tackle the Bear Mountain area the next day. This included the notorious Lemon Squeezer. I tried and succeeded in not ripping my bag or rain cover as I navigated the tight fit. Bear Mountain held a trailside zoo and fun lodge. I walked across the Bear Mountain Bridge and caught a train passing as well as weekenders on a large boat. A: I travel really cheap, free camping, cooking my own meals, being as efficient as possible. I make my income almost entirely on YouTube but it's really tight. Ad revenue, patreon, paypal donations, merchandise sales and affiliate links bring in about as much as a part time minimum wage job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough I go back to work, doing photography mostly, sometimes commercial video projects, but it takes me away from my travels and videos. - How much does it cost? I spend on average $2000 travelling, most of which is gas, some repairs, food, and on average less than $200 on any eating out, shopping or extra curricular expenditures. I make $200 a month from YouTube and $400 from Patreon. The rest I make from my work. - What camera do you use? We decided to go separate ways (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPgxDIXxCjY&t=4s) - Are you rich or something? definitely not. I've spent some quality time homeless, I've struggled financially most of my life, and although I'm blessed with great friends and family as well as being able bodied white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to travel the world. You need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, time with family, and often your career but it is possible. - Why don't you have 10x more subscribers? My channel isn't that old, many of the bigger channels you can compare mine to started putting out videos a couple years before I began. I could always use your help sharing my videos, spreading the word, and connecting with cross promotional opportunities. Editing and travelling tend to take up all my time. - Where are you now? HURRICANE IRMA is definitely taking her toll and destroying everything in her path.
