In August 2018 we headed out to a four-week Adventure Trip around British Columbia, Alberta and Alaska. We had the pleasure to experience incredible landscaps and the native wildlife, including Brown Bears, Black Bears, Bald Eagles, Humpback Whales, Wapitis and much more. Furthermore we discovered nearly untouched areas, which was a very unique experience in a world were you see the impact of human activities almost everywhere. Our route began in Vancouver and Vancouver Island. Then we moved on to Alaska (Juneau and Wrangell) and the area of Alberta (Jasper and Banff NP). A visit to Bundaberg and finding out the fate of our previous boat.

Just one week is left before we depart our home port of Racine, Wisconsin — for good!?! — and take off south down the river. The list of projects, errands, and to-dos is still a mile long. We need to buy anchor chain, install an anchor swivel, hook up plumbing to our secondary water tank, install sound deadening material inside the engine compartment, top off our batteries, install a cell phone booster, figure out what’s up with our engine leaking oil, arrange for our mast to be unstepped in Chicago, and organize our entire boat — which is a nonstop mess. In between the chores, we squeeze a little yoga, a workout, grocery provisioning, and even a day sail with our boat neighbors. They’ve so graciously helped us with so many boat projects over the summer, and since neither of them were able to sail their own boats this season, we were happy to be able to take them out on ours. Plans have changed and we decide to stay in St. Barth's! To get out of the extremely rolly and uncomfortable main harbor, we drop our mooring ball and take the 2 mile trip around the corner to Anse de Colombier. Here we figure we can begin to tackle a few of the boat projects which need to be done before our Atlantic crossing. Matt discussing our 3-D sheeting set-up for the mainsail, and I talk a little bit about route options and why we've decided to stay put. On our list of chores is removing the traveler from our boat, but before it can be *all* the way completed, our grinder burns out. Making a few trips in the dinghy all the way back to town, we find that we can not get a replacement grinder in St. Barth's.....and also learn of some tragic news back home. One thing I secretly love is a good country music hoedown. I used to think the Calgary Stampede was the best of the best when it came to Country. I was wrong. This week I witnessed the best. A Country Hoedown, an awesome group of boaters, AND our own island. This is that party. I get some top quality line dancing instruction and rip up the dancefloor while Sayo enjoys the local distilled beverages and we get our first taste of pre-teen girl drama. The core of "Family Circus" is Chris (Dad / Captain), Sayo (Mom / Admiral), Aya (First Officer / Deckhand) and Miya (Baby / Stainless Polisher). After many years in business in Vancouver we were tired of life inside the box and wanted to make a change, we just weren't exactly sure what would be next. In July of 2016, when Sayo was six months pregnant, we decided (somewhat at the last minute) to fly to New Caledonia for one last holiday before the baby was born. On this trip we decided to buy "Family Circus", planned to sail her to New Zealand and started an adventure that has changed our lives. Here's a weeks worth of groceries for us as a plant based couple. We live in hawaii and grocery prices are pretty high. Our budget is currently $140/week, but will probably be going up to $150/week. I know this seems like a lot, but we love to eat and experiment with new foods! We'd like to start shopping at more local farmers markets and things, but its still a work in progress. This week, we answer a question we receive from Robert: How much preparation do you do for each passage, and do you have assigned roles onboard? Ahead of our slightly over 100 nautical miles sail between Cascais near Lisbon in Portugal, and Lagos at the Southern tip, we take you through our all our sailing preparations for our coastal passage. We go through everything from picking our destinations and route, navigation and weather briefing (as well as the navigation and weather tools we use for that), checking the engine, the bilge, the ditch bag, all the way to provisions, food, deck preps, to raising the anchor and hosting the sail! Take a detailed look at the new Outremer 51 at the Cannes boat show

We sail 100nm overnight to our first stop in the Bahamas, Acklins Island. Being pregnant on a boat, you can imagine it can make any slight feelings of morning sickness or nausea amplify. So on this trip, I was feeling very nauseous the whole time and basically didn't leave my little sleeping spot in the saloon other than to make a mad dash to the back of the boat. I've had a pretty sweet ride so far, but sometimes when it gets tough it makes you not so keen for the next trip and you wonder how you will ever continue. The second Trimester is supposed to be easier, right?
