On the 18th August 2022, a violent storm hit Corsica. It was 7am in the morning, we were at anchor in Porto Pollo and experienced 60kts of wind. The most wind either of us have ever experienced at sea. Thankfully Caladh and crew were ok, but the aftermath was uncomfortable and even more so when we learned of the full impact. This was a sobering reminder not to rush through life, but nonetheless we were glad to finally be in France (Corsica) and on track to make Kath's brother's wedding. So pour yourself a drink, sit back, relax and set sail on another adventure with us. Subscribe to our website for updates! We had a lava-ly time in this episode (sorry). Yes, we couldn't resist sailing to the beautiful Aeolian Islands, just North of Sicily. A group of seven volcanic islands, with a stinky elderly volcano on Vulcano island, to a younger more obviously active lava spewing volcano Stromboli! Join us as we explore these mesmerising cracks in the Earth's crust by day... and by night! Time starts ticking though... as we have a deadline to make it to Corsica before flying to Latvia for Kath's brother's wedding (she's officiating don't forget!!). So, in this episode we also have a quick stop in Palermo, before sailing from Sicily to Sardinia. We also tackle a leak in our fuel pipe! In this episode we tackle the legendary Messina Strait, dodging multiple swordfish fishing (Passerelle) boats, whirlpools, currents and traffic. The Scendente and Bastardi currents made their presence known, but soon enough we were spat out the top in one piece! Despite losing our orientation ever so slightly whilst behind the wheel(!), we soon set our sights on the beautiful Aeolian Islands just North of Sicily. We anchor off a stinky and steamy elderly volcano, find HOT bubbling springs and a collection of seriously organised fish! We're back, back, back again! YES! Ok firstly, we're sorry it's taken so long to edit these videos. Life ran away with us, Covid happened, work, sailing, weddings... it's been hectic. BUT here we are (not in real time), re-joining Caladh post-Covid. Catch-up with us, as we set sail once again... this time for France! It's quite a big mission this season, we have a race against the clock (now that post-Brexit we can only spend 90-days (Schengen) in the EU) AND... Kath needs to make it to Latvia to officiate her brother's wedding. No pressure. Will we make it?! Join us this season to find out! In this episode, as always, we have boat jobs to do, including some gel-coating of old war wounds, antifouling (of course) and an installation of a new rope-stripper. We then slip the lines and make the 300+ nautical mile passage for Sicily (again!). So pour yourself a drink, sit back, relax and join us back onboard Caladh. Subscribe to our website for updates! This was quite an emotional chapter for us. Not only because we are missing Caladh terribly (and wonder if she misses us too!), but also because in this episode we ended up making one of the most difficult decisions of our adventure so far... to leave the boat somewhere safe and travel back to Manchester. Family illness and the escalating pandemic were the main reasons for this mid-season finale, which we chat a bit more about in this episode. Despite this, we still manage to clock up over 2,000 nautical miles and explore the deep Mani in the Southern Peloponnesus. We test our new electric outboard for the first time, see dolphins, fortresses, breathtaking sunsets and sail the length of the dramatic rugged coastline made famous by author Patrick Leigh Fermor and home to descendants of the Spartans. So pour yourself a drink, sit back, relax and sail off into the sunset with us, as we share the only Mani in our life and sprinkle you with our favourite tales from this year of (incidental) sailing. In this chapter, we sail from Athens, through the narrow channel off Poros and South towards the Peloponnese. Sadly the preventative maintenance we had invested in Caladh on Samos was beginning to unravel. This coupled with the growing pandemic and the reality of its global impact, threw hundreds of variables into sharp relief for T and I. Much like the culprit of our 'knocking' sound, we were beginning to be a bit ground down. Life on the boat is isolated and, in many ways, we were some of the safest individuals on the planet. That said, the concern for family and friends and the physical separation was intensifying. As we all know, a week is a very long time in a pandemic, so our plans were changing regularly. I share this with you because you might notice we appear on camera slightly less this episode, but also to break the fourth wall social media mirage and delusion of 'everything is perfect'. I mean I think we shatter this fairly regularly ANYway(!), with toilet pumps breaking, tornados and leaks, but nevertheless, I think it's a pertinent reminder - especially in 2020. The reality is that we have captured what we could at the time and more often than not, this is when we were feeling more up to it... but like most people this year, we struggled too. However, we were on a mission to stay safe and keep our options open. So we pulled our socks up as best we could and decided to sail beyond Spetses to escape the (now busy) charter-boat zones and head for the Peloponnese. Mother nature was on our side and we were rewarded with some fantastic downwind sailing, accompanied by dramatic mountainous valleys, deserted anchorages and crystal-clear waters. The veil of worry was still there, but we took what we could and for us, the Peloponnese was exactly the kind of adventure into raw mother nature we love - a timely reminder. So pour yourself a drink, sit back, relax for a moment and join us for some escapism as we venture into the Peloponnese. Subscribe to our website for updates! What would you put in Room 101? This season it was mosquitos 165 and the sailing nomads ZERO. In this short chat, we have a couple of mosquito incidents to share... because a problem shared is a problem halved? *fingers crossed!
Mother nature never ceases to amaze... or SURPRISE! After leaving Samos, we make our way across the Aegean for the second time. Hopping fairly swiftly between islands in an effort to avoid the full force of the Summer Meltemi winds. Little did we know we were soon to be gifted with a slightly different meteorological phenomenon - a WATERSPOUT. Thankfully for us, we were not in its path, so it only left us with a slightly increased heart rate and some twisted material for our memoirs. After a few more stops along the way, we eventually made it to Athens where we were booked-in to get our nine-year-old rig replaced. So grab a drink, sit back and relax. In this chapter, we finally slip the lines and go sailing! That is, just after we install a BIG 245watt Panasonic solar panel and 370ah AGM batteries to store all the reNEWable power. Neither of us are electricians, so it was a steep learning curve, but with a lot of help from our friends and a bit of trial and error we got there in the end. 'Bertha' (the panel) now generates enough power for us to live and work from the boat, which was always a goal of ours when we set off on this adventure. Next, we sail West towards Athens, racing across the Aegean for the second time before the Meltemi kicks in again. Subscribe to our website for updates! As the world descended into chaos this year, so did we! It seemed like everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. The cooker was awkward, the stern gland was awkward, the thru-hulls were moving, the prop had to come off and our anodes were seized something rotten! That said, we got there in the end and given everything going on, we were grateful to be on Caladh and making progress... however slow! Subscribe to our website for updates! After spending last Winter in Marina Di Ragusa, Sicily, we decide to mix things up a bit this year and take a working trip to San Francisco. We totally fall in love with the city, but our life on the boat soon calls us back. Returning to Greece, the world is changing and the day after we land we dive headfirst into 14-day quarantine! Hi folks, we're on Day 6 of staying home. Making this video provided some much-needed distraction and light relief. There's a lot going on, but perhaps watching this will do the same for you too, if you need it. Sending all our love and healthy vibes. Kath & T xx It's mixed emotions on board, as we complete our final sail of the season before securing the lines in Samos for the Winter. There's no rest for the wicked though, with a list of boat jobs as long as our boom. So join us for some light relief (the haul-out not included!), as we close our second season on s/v Caladh. Welcome aboard as we continue sailing East across the Aegean. This time, in slightly calmer conditions! We also practise goose-swinging, fix our wind generator 'Bertie', visit a monastery and clean up a beach. Before heading to our Winter berth near Turkey. Join us for a glass of red as we discuss our sailing experience prior to moving onboard Caladh, how we find it sailing as a couple and offer a bit of drunken advice if you're curious to get on the water too! Caveat: there was a generous dose of wine in the making of this video. Cheers!
After leaving our friends in Epidaurus, we sail East into the Aegean. Our timing couldn't have been worse, entering just as the Meltemi fires up big time. Despite knowing this, we choose to go anyway(!), reefing hard and pushing ourselves to the limit. So much so, there are two parts to this adventure. So pour yourself a stiff one, hold on tight and enjoy the ride! Subscribe to our website for updates! Yep. Our start battery dies, we have an ongoing leak in the stern gland that needs fixing AND we get our anchor tangled in the biggest mooring line and old rusty fisherman anchor bundle you have EVER seen! Arrrrrggghhh!! But don't fear, we do get stuff sorted. We also have a birthday on board, dive on the wreck of a bi-plane and discover Caladh has her own in-built wind machine! It's never dull, we can promise you that. Subscribe to our website for updates! Join us as we do the 267 nautical mile passage the other way, this time with The Mothership! It's a near-perfect crossing from Siracusa to Argostoli, with a cooperative wind off the starboard quarter.... except for a problem 50 miles offshore (again), when our prop gets choked on some poly-tunnel plastic. Thankfully this was easier to resolve than the engine failure we had last time. So after a few days in Argostoli, we have a quick crew change, visit Zakinthos and transit the Corinth Canal on our way to the Aegean. Oh and we completely lose our biscuits...
