We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, fifteen months after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. Despite being mid-November, Portugal laid on warm temperatures and light winds for the opening day of the RC44 Cascais Cup, the final regatta of 2018 for the high performance one design monohulls. However with an offshore easterly to southeasterly blowing, the swell failing to line up with the breeze and often coming from different directions, combined with the ebb flowing west out of Lisbon’s Tagus River for most of the day, racing today was a most complex exercise for the tacticians. It also was for the race committee; PRO Peter Reggio somehow managing to find conditions stable enough to hold a second race, after his first attempt had to be abandoned following a major right shift. The RC44 Cascais Cup is the final event of the 2018 RC44 Championship Tour which pits the world's top businessmen and the best sailors in the industry compete in high-performance one-design 44-foot carbon racing yachts. The US Sailing Reach Initiative, a national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) educational program to inspire sailing programs and schools to utilize sailing as a teaching platform, focuses on building community partnerships through program implementation. Columbia Sailing School and Yacht Club in Chicago has been implementing Reach for several years and was recently recognized as an Emerging Hub and Mid-West Center of Excellence in the Reach Program. They utilize local and regional partnerships to execute their programming and engage students on a deeper level. Module six of the Reach curriculum is featured in this video. We mix some fantastic sailing with incredible food discoveries in this episode. First we discover the joys of foodie city Alicante on mainland Spain. After that we have a wild Nikau record (12.6 knots) downwind ride to Cartegena where we discover a tapas & beers festival is on citywide - all the restaurants are offering a tapa & drink for only 2.50 euro a pop (we were able to exchange beer for wine & coke as well thankfully). We also make some new friends with a French family in the very affordable but excellent marina in Cartegena. So impressed with the history, food, culture and marinas in Spain - exceeds all our expectations!! We are the Robbins family sailing on our yacht named Nikau. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures! I had spent so much time and effort trying to get all of my measurements just right when I was replacing all of the standing rigging, and it all came down to a single very moment where I would know if I had done everything right. Leaving Spitzbergen the engine sea water cooling pump died and we made emergency repairs to get to Norway. We cruised the rugged northern islands of Scotland and the west coast of Ireland. When we crossed the Bay of Biscay the weather got warmer. After Christmas on Long Island, courtesy of a 747, we made a double-handed passage to St. Martin; two old men with and average age of about 75. On the way home we visited the worker’s paradise of Cuba, and left it in stormy weather for the Bahamas and then Bermuda. Fiona Cruises to Antarctica, (Chapter 3), 1998 to 1999. This was my first cruise to Antarctica, I chose a tough route via the Chilean ‘Canals’- the labyrinth of channels and passages on the west coast of Chile. We endured deep anchorages, gusty winds and icebergs. On the way back, we duplicated the famous voyage of Sir Ernest Shackleton who made passage from Elephant Island to South Georgia in a small boat in 1916 after his ship was crushed in the ice. We managed to anchor briefly in the open roadstead at Tristan da Cunha and get ashore in the dinghy. This voyage attracted the attention of the Cruising Club of America, who were gracious enough the following year to award me the Blue Water medal in recognition. New York to Falmouth, U.K. on Arvincourt ll, 1964. This depicts the start of Captain Forsyth’s ocean sailing; a voyage to England as crew with Edith on board John Knight’s home-made cutter. The action was filmed with an 8mm camera by Steve Gould, it was later edited onto a DVD with narration. The boat was sturdy, but slow; the trip took 33 days.
