Day 1 we drove over the mountain from the west to east very spectacular road. Day 2 we drive down to Ponta de Cha very tricky road down from the mountain(2 hour) and when we come down and finally find a place for lunch we ask were the road was further north, no road, you have to go back the same way !!!!!

This week we finally finish up the yard work and sail our baby for the first real sail of our ownership of her. Sure we have sailed her once, (kind of) on the Sea Trial, and when we took her to the boatyard in November of Last year, (a year ago at this point). That time we sailed her, Jib Only, south across Lake Ponchartrain about 30 miles or so. I would love to get all noble sailer on everyone and talk about us doing that for the joy of sailing, but we did it because the motor died with a fuel system problem. So now here we are leaving the yard and all I want to do is throw up ALL of her sails. She is not rigged the way we want her BUT she is ready to be sailed across the lake for sure. So in this episode, we finish up some tasks and head out and set sail. We do run into 2 squalls and some fairly steep and tight waves (shallow lake sailing is sometimes more rough than sailing in the ocean). Check out the video of some of the pitching and rollings. What lies between us and saltwater sailing? 1300 miles of rivers! Before we can get underway, we need to unstep our mast. For this leg of our journey south, we turning our sailboat into a motorboat. There’s a fixed 19’ 1” bridge in Chicago that forces sailboats to ditch their sticks. Besides that, rivers don’t offer the best sailing opportunities. ;) Some sailors opt to carry their masts on deck, others, like us, decide to ship it via truck. In this episode, we pull into Skyway Yacht Works at the mouth of the Calumet River to have our mast unstepped and pack it for shipping. Our mast is keel-stepped, so while our boat is only 37', our mast is 52'. Besides the massive inconvenience of having the mast and rigging on deck making it difficult to see and move around, we decided we didn't want to worry about jousting something or someone while maneuvering in tight quarters. We would of had 15' hanging off the bow/stern of our boat, and that just felt unsafe all around. And in the end, all variables considered, it ended up costing us only a handful of boat bucks more to ship it vs. putting it on deck. Even though we’re packing away our sails for now, we’re already thinking about a new headsail for sailing in the trade winds. Our 155% genoa is old, stretched out and much too big for where we’re headed next: the Gulf of Mexico, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. After Kirk spent hours researching the type of sail we wanted (115% Dacron tri-radial), we contacted over a dozen sail lofts for quotes. We received the best information from Mack Sails and Precision Sails. In the end, we ordered our new headsail from Precision Sails, as they were the most responsive, their quote form the most detailed, and their price the cheapest. Hard to beat. Exploring Central Vanuatu was beyond our expectations. We strolled along coastal roads in Epi, made fast friends with the locals and visited deserted islands in Malekula and for the pinnacle, attended the "Back to Our Roots" festival on Ambrym. The festival is put on for the villagers to help preserve their traditions. All ages participate. It was scripted but felt very real. From the incredible custom dress, to the very beginning where tradition has it that a pig is sacrificed for the sacred Nakimal (house of worship) to the mind numbing rhythmic dancing and chanting. We were thrilled to be invited. For 3 days we witnessed everything from the Yam dance to a circumcision dance and for the pinnacle, the Rom dance. It was an experience we will never forget. It is an experience we are so stoked to be able to share with you. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

(Ep.52) Ricky finishes up the foamalite layout for our headliner, now all we still got to do is wrap it up in vinyl and install. He also had to plug up some holes on the stern where we removed some fittings. Ricky installed the leg for our table, but realized we need a double leg set up so were waiting for our other leg to arrive and we can install our table for good.Ricky and Moses get done fairing off our decks and prepared to get painted white. Ricky & I also head off to the petting zoo because who doesn't like petting cute fluffy farm animals! It was great meeting our Patreons Ryan and Genevieve! Ricky and I head off to Durban because we had to get Ricky to work to finish up a project that side and make some money to put right into our boat again. :P We met up with Dave in Durban who has built this beautiful 40ft Catamaran from scratch all by himself. It was truly and inspiration to see & the amount of work and detail went into it was incredible! We had to try pop our watermaker pump into a dodgy looking box so that i could fly with us down to Port Elizabeth! It got checked in and had no problems so it was Happy Days for us! At this half way stage of the RC44 Cascais Cup, Vladimir Prosikhin’s Team Nika is the stand-out leader. The 2018 World Champions, on which Dean Barker calls tactics, won the first race today, as she did yesterday, and remained star performer up until today’s final race. In this she was called OCS and, unlike yesterday, was unable to recover, causing her seven point lead to dwindle to four. Behind Team Nika the leaderboard remains impossibly close with just five points separating second from sixth in the eight boat fleet. Langsam geht es auf den Winter zu. Zumindest, wenn es nach dem Kalender geht. Aber die Saison neigt sich auch in Kaş dem Ende. Ein Großteil der Gulets im Stadthafen ist schon aus dem Wasser.

Es geht doch nicht nach Lissabon. Der wind macht uns ein Strich durch die Rechnung. Wir steuern der nächsten Hafen an. Nach Figueria da Foz soll es gehen. Die Stadt überrascht nciht mit ihrer Schönheit oder Charme. Stattdessen gibt es ein großes Casino im Zentrum um das sich das gesamte Stadtleben dreht. Wir würdigen dem Casino nur einen kurzen Besuch und 5€ und anstatt lieber Surfen in den Wellen. Ja genau die Wellen... die sind so groß, dass wir den Hafen für ganze 10 Tage nicht verlassen können. Surfen können wir dann natürlich auch nicht... Aber wir machen uns eine schöne Zeit und finden sogar unsere ersten Freunde auf der Tour. Ein älteres Pärchen das uns auf ihr Boot einlädt und auich grade im Hafen festsitzt. Allerdings nicht wegen den Wellen sondern wegen Motorproblemen. JA... Motorprobleme kriegen wir auch noch. Nach einem weiteren Surfverusch crashen wir das Beiboot in den Wellen und der kleine 5PS Außenbordmotor kentert einmal durch. Jetzt hat Tom erstmal was zu tun um den wieder flott zu machen. The engine has gone 800 hours and it is time to clean the heat exchanger and change the coolant fluid. It is always a big mess to let out the coolant and this time I also remove the heat exchanger cooling pipe held in place by two rubber boots or sleeves. But as you know one problem leads to the next one and this time it's no exception. The system rinse must be done every 400 hours according to the manual and the coolant must be changed every 2. year to protect the system against corrosion. The brass cooling unit must lie in vinegar a day or two to remove any deposits in and around the cooling pipes.
