The 2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race concluded on 31 December with the final prizegiving held in Hobart, Tasmania. Of the 85 yachts who started the 74th edition, 79 completed the 628-nm race and there were six retirements. Recipients of Rolex timepieces were Alive as overall race winner and Wild Oats XI for line honours. The achievements of all class winners were recognised as were the personal and collective achievements of the sailors and crews in finishing this revered and gruelling offshore race, one which is embodied by a true Corinthian spirit. Rolex has been Title Sponsor of the 628-nm race, organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia with the collaboration of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, since 2002.

What happend to the calm and sunny Mediterranean? Why are there big waves and so much wind? Okay... I agree it's no summer anymore but... See us in this episode when we sail from Alicante to Torrevieja to pick up Lena, anchor one night in a sweet water Lake and finally arrive in Aguadulce. We have more wind and wave as we expected, but it's a good training for our upcoming Atlantic crossing.

We learnt some lessons from our last (stressful!) trip and this one was a very different experience... First and foremost we set off on time, just before high tide. This meant that we were able to transit both locks in free-flow, which made things very easy. We also decided not to wrap Emma up like a Michelin-Man, strapped into a car seat in a lifejacket. This meant she was much more relaxed and as any parent knows, a happy baby = happy parents! Overall this was a very easy passage. We would have loved to have got the sails out and gone sailing, but that would have meant missing the tide, and in all honesty we are happy to take small, successful baby-steps, rather than take on too much and suffer a mishap before we have even got to know our new boat. "Slow and steady wins the race" as they say... Before we leave Chatham, Chris also gets a tour inside a UK Border Force patrol vessel, which was really interesting. Off the coast of Lombok we lose our engine, how do we get out of this one? https://www.sailingnandji.com This week on Sailing Nandji, heading back to sea after a lovely quick stop off at the Komodo Islands, we continue sailing into the sunset heading West towards the island of Lombok. Cruising past the island of Sumbawa, we have engine issues and discussing the great places on the island, decide to make a detour and explore for a few waves. Having a quick surf at Scar reef, we return to the sea crossing the Alas Strait between Sumbawa and Lombok. We have 100nm to travel to reach the destination where we plan to collect our new crew member. Off the coast of Lombok, things take a turn for the worse losing our engine. How do we get out of this one! We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We have been in Indonesia for a couple of months cruising and are now high tailing to Malaysia for boat work. We departed Australia 18 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some amazing people and experienced cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, fifteen months after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it. Much love Carla and Simon

Alive, a 66-ft Reichel/Pugh design owned by Phillip Turner, has been announced as overall winner of the 2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. The fifth yacht to finish this year's race, Alive prevails from an 85-strong international fleet. Alive becomes the first Tasmanian yacht to win the race since 1979 and the fourth winner from the island since the inaugural race in 1945. Turner and his crew were rewarded for their historic success with the Tattersall Cup and a Rolex timepiece at a presentation held on Constitution Dock. Rolex has been Title Sponsor of the 628-nm race, organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia with the collaboration of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, since 2002.

Fuerteventura with two very esteemed guests in the shape of Freyja and Bubbles. Xanthe's two best mates made a short trip over from the UK to sail and surf around the island. A lot of love bursting out the seams of this episode. Freyja, Xanthe and Bubbles all moved to Australia together more than 8 years ago, and recently they all left to pursue new ventures.
