Herby prepares Wisdom for Hurricane Helene! After the storm, he continues working on the boat. The project on the menu is to remove the rotten wood from the closet, and there is a lot of rotten wood! Solid beams of wood have turned into mulch. Herby then returns to the states where he and Maddie go to the Chesapeake Dental Conference (CDC). Lastly, they visit the Annapolis Sailboat Show, where they meet other sailors, friends, and Sailing Miss Lonestar! Herby and Maddie give their opinions on the new boats they see, discussing design features that are awesome and others that are failures when actually sailing. In this interview with Tommy Spithill we hear about Winning Appliances race to Hobart, the purpose of their race – to commemorate the loss of John Dean in the 1998 race, whose son Peter raced aboard Winning Appliances – the importance of keeping a crew fresh and thrill of surfing down waves in a fast run south with your mates. And of course there always has to be an entertaining anecdote to share when you talk to Tommy!
We are still enjoying the beautiful Ha’apais, a small archipelago in the middle of Tonga. We find a desolate island which we relish for as long as possible before heading to the main town to do a local clear in.. Weird we know.. We chill out for our last couple of days in the southern islands where we meet some great friends and have a few days of quality time. Next stop, Tongatapu! The 2019 O'Pen Bic Worlds hosted by Manly Sailing Club is officially opened! The first races kick off on Sunday 30th December. The Opening Ceremony celebrated the sailors with almighty cheers. Let the racing begin!
Wild Oats X- Ocean Respect Racing skippered by Stacey Jackson achieved a great finish coming in 6th across the line in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and currently 2nd on IRC handicap. She talks about the trip down and whether she’ll be back again.
A thrilling contest for 2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart line honours went down to the wire with the fleet’s remaining four 100-ft Maxis offering a compelling spectacle and finishing within 42 minutes of each other. Having assumed leadership of the 628-nm race shortly after 04:00 AEDT on the second morning, Wild Oats XI extended her advantage down the Derwent River to cross the Hobart finish line in first place. Owned by the Oatley family and skippered by Mark Richards, Wild Oats XI extends her record number of line honours victories to nine. Peter Harburg’s Black Jack finished second on the water prevailing from an epic duel with last year’s line honours winner Comanche. The gap a mere 63 seconds. The spotlight now turns to who will claim the Tattersall Cup and Rolex timepiece as overall race winner.
RSHYR 2018 – SUPER MAXI INTERVIEWS With much of the attention in Hobart focused on the AIS protest against Wild Oats XI (the protest found invalid at the hearing just completed) this selection of interviews with skippers and some highly credentialed crew aboard the four super maxis gives some insights on how things played out on the water for the four super maxis. Bow Caddy spoke to Juan Vila (Wild Oats XI), Mark Bradford, Tom Addis and Brad Butterworth (Black Jack), Kyle Langford (Comanche) and Chris Nicholson and Bouwe Bekking (InfoTrack). Even across this eminent line-up there was some surprise that four such different designs could occupy the same patch of water for so much of the race.
This week in the World on Water Rolex Sydney Hobart Race start and Black Jack is first out of the Heads Half way to Hobart report Wild Oats XI is first round Tasman Island, into the Derwent River and the finish The Commodore of the CYCA announces that the Race Committee has protested WOXI for not having their AIS enabled The first day of the BIC O'pen Worlds in New Zealand The start of the Melbourne to Hobart Race. remember if you like the show hot the "Like" button and share with friends

We have been thinking for a while now that it would be great to buy a waterfront lot that would have a canal or place to park the boat. Frankly, with the price of property in Florida and the cost of slip rent, we started thinking that in about five to eight years of slip rent, we may be better off buying a lot. There are a lot of variables that go to that like the allowance of living aboard if you don't put a house on the property. And could we put a garage without a house, etc? This was a weekend that we decided to head over toward Panama City Florida area and see if there is a good deal to be had given the storm that went through. I figured there would be quite a few listing of people who had either damage or losses to their house, collected the insurance money and wanted to get out of the area. So that was our plan. Head to Florida for the weekend and check out some properties. We looked at a half dozen or so and the first good learning is realtors rarely know much about water and water navigation. The number of listing we saw that said: "Deepwater sailboat access to the Gulf" were in the 20-40 range. When we looked at the charts, 98% of them were either on a 3-foot deep canal or a narrow channel that was not dredged and many were on the wrong side of a fixed bridge and in many cases, those bridges were 30-50 feet in vertical clearance. There is a lot of extra things to sift through when considering this as an option. When we got to Florida, I was a bit overcome with just how devastated the area was even 2 months after the hurricane hit. The sheer force of nature to snap forests of trees, destroy buildings and homes and pile boats up like discarded toys were depressing. We still looked at houses, but frankly felt guilty the whole time doing so. After the sobering visit to Florida, we returned to the boat to continue with the epoxy work on the exterior that needed to be completed. Deb turned her attention to the varnishing down below and after a final sand and prep of the surface, she applied 2 coats of satin finish varnish down below. She also opted to stain the banister and railing between the galley and salon a dark (almost black) color. It will have to grow on me a bit but she has never let me down over the years with her vision of color, paint and finish on our boats and even our homes. The support post for the hard bimini top on 9 LIVES cracked! After a month of ignoring the temporary fix done at anchor, Duke finally made a somewhat better repair to the PVC post. This repair video is relatively pointless for anyone else, since the bimini top is custom-made and so doesn't really have any relevance to any other sailboat. Whatever. It is just a step in the eventual transformation of 9 LIVES from an acceptable boat to a world-class mega-yacht. OK, maybe not. This repair has lasted without failure all summer, fall, and now winter. In the spring, Duke has plans to reconfigure much of the bimini top, including a brand new support structure which will include a relocation of the main sheet traveler and an integrated dinghy davits system. In this episode; We arrive at super chilled out Cay Caulker but northern weather systems warrant we find a more protected anchorage, so we’re off sailing south for Robinson island just 8 miles East of Belize City, but Robinson Island feels like a dodgy and slightly unsafe place to spend the night and so we continue sailing further, searching for somewhere safe to drop the anchor. At the end of this episode; awesome Drone footage of our anchorage at Commence Bight, Dangriga and then a few short bloopers... our GoPro is voice activated and doesn’t always listen! Spend an all inclusive week with us aboard our catamaran Saltair3 learning how to live aboard, prepare, repair, provision, check into foreign countries and sail a big cat, or just sit back, relax and enjoy being aboard Saltair3 in the warm and beautiful Caribbean Sea. (Ep.58) Hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas!! Next stop... 2019! WHOOP! This week, we attempted to remove our engine.. which ended up being a epic fail! We spent the whole day setting up this A frame.. just for it to fail on us, but that's what this whole boat building experience has been about. Trial & Error. We show you the state of our engine bay & the future plans for it. We show you how corroded and gross looking our Z drive is. I get down to varnishing our cabinetry doors since.. it is a lengthy process & then we give Moses a big SURPRISE for Christmas... why?? because he's a legend & has helped us so much this year! If you know of anyone or you yourself live in the Port Elizabeth Vicinity and would like to employ Moses.. please email us on svladyafrica@gmail.com We also got our own surprise... which i won't give away in the description.. because that defeats the purpose of you watching the video now doesn't it ;) If you want to purchase one of our sweet coins go check out the link below: http://www.svseeker.com/wp/product/lady-africa-coin/ Thanks for watching! Crossing the Gulf Stream in good weather beats boat preparation hands down. And it starts days, even weeks before. Here’s why. In fact to Go or No Go on any passage scores: WEATHER 10 BOAT PREP Meh. Does this mean we should neglect our boat? No. But a boat, any boat, is NEVER ready. Good weather will make bath tubs and bleach bottles seaworthy. It is the Captains job to make the call. The kids at the O'pen BIC World Championships show us what sailing is all about. "What I love most about Bic Sailing is that everyone is happy. There's no dramas and no complaints". Amen! It was an honour to see 140 sailors from around the world racing at Manly Sailing Club, New Zealand.
