I start my trip to Iceland by sailing up the West coast of France; I make an awkward arrival at a port due to tidal current; I manage to change a speed log without sinking the boat; and I divert from planned destination due to high winds and lee shore in the anchorage.

I wanted to get sailing footage of the boat at sea, but being a novice drone pilot I was afraid of launching and landing a drone from the boat. SwellPro appeared to have the answer with the Splash Drone 3, a fully waterproof drone with 4K video capability and, most importantly, the ability to take off and land from the water. This meant that I would not have to be an expert pilot to get great footage, only the ability to pluck the drone out of the water with a boat hook after each flight. The only drawback seemed to be the hefty $1.7K price tag, but being so eager to get great sailing footage it was a risk I was willing to take. Well I did get some decent footage. Unfortunately this drone developed problems about one month out of the box. I had to buy a new camera for it when water seeped into the original one. Then a rotor began to wobble. SwellPro customer service was less than stellar. Long story short I ended up listing the drone on eBay for parts. It sold for $200. In this episode we sail from Los Roques, Venezuela to Bonaire, the first of the 3 "ABC" islands we went to, which include Aruba and Curacao. Here we are forced to go into a marina as ALL of the mooring balls were taken! Nonetheless we made the most of our short time there, rented scooters and blasted around the island, and went for some incredible dives. Bonaire is world famous for its diving and it did not disappoint! The marine park has 86 dive sites where you can grab a temporary mooring ball and dive off the back of your boat! SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged 2012 Lagoon 450 Catamaran bought in Tortola, BVI at the beginning of 2018. Trailer sailing the wrecks of NE Port Phillip Bay including the HMAS Cerberus, HMS J7 Submarine and an unknown wreck at Altona Beach. I sail Neringa my RL28 from St.Helens in Geelong to Portarlington for the night. Previously installed ballast and a new mainsail showed their worth with 6 to 7 knots in a 17 knot breeze with only 10 to 15 degrees of heel. Then on to Black Rock and the Cerberus followed by Sandringham Yacht Club marina and the J7 submarine. On to Williamstown for the night before sailing back to Geelong the following day with a look at the small unknown wreck on Altona beach. With light winds the sail to Geelong took 10 hours with the wind rarely getting above 10 knots.

Ep 39. Those of you guys who have been following for a while will know about our issues with our Gennaker. More precisely, that bloody sail has been a nightmare for us that culminated in the middle of the Atlantic when it split into 2 halves. The sail loft in Saint Martin were great and pointed out to us that we’ve been flying it back to front the whole time since we started sailing! Apparently, the luff of the sail should be the longer edge. We’ve also now installed it in a sock as the sail isn’t really suitable to be used with a furler as it doesn’t have a torsion rope. After getting all our jobs done in Saint Martin, we clear out of customs and set sail for the British Virgin Islands with a cheeky little stop off on a deserted little island called Dog Island as it leaves us with a nice day light sail to get to BVI. After a romantic Valentines day and night as the only boat anchored on Dog Island, we set off for BVI. We were expecting a 12 hour sail but with 20kt winds off our starboard quarter we were flying. We managed 12kts in flat seas as we approached Richard Branson’s island called Necker which unfortunately I didn’t get on camera so you’ll have to take my word for it. We’ve got our act together at long last and are planning to have a new episode uploaded for you every Sunday morning. Check back next week where we start exploring the amazing British Virgin Islands.
