Ep 39. Those of you guys who have been following for a while will know about our issues with our Gennaker. More precisely, that bloody sail has been a nightmare for us that culminated in the middle of the Atlantic when it split into 2 halves. The sail loft in Saint Martin were great and pointed out to us that we’ve been flying it back to front the whole time since we started sailing! Apparently, the luff of the sail should be the longer edge. We’ve also now installed it in a sock as the sail isn’t really suitable to be used with a furler as it doesn’t have a torsion rope. After getting all our jobs done in Saint Martin, we clear out of customs and set sail for the British Virgin Islands with a cheeky little stop off on a deserted little island called Dog Island as it leaves us with a nice day light sail to get to BVI. After a romantic Valentines day and night as the only boat anchored on Dog Island, we set off for BVI. We were expecting a 12 hour sail but with 20kt winds off our starboard quarter we were flying. We managed 12kts in flat seas as we approached Richard Branson’s island called Necker which unfortunately I didn’t get on camera so you’ll have to take my word for it. We’ve got our act together at long last and are planning to have a new episode uploaded for you every Sunday morning. Check back next week where we start exploring the amazing British Virgin Islands. It seems like a mountain of impossibilities, never in my life would I have imagined: 1. I'd drive a dinghy 5 miles out into the open ocean. 2. I'd be comfortable enough to jump into the deep abyss and just start swimming. 3. I'd get to watch a massive humpback whale swim right up and look into my soul (and nearly touch my camera with his nose). I know some people will feel strongly about this vid, but you should know we had conversations with several whale tour operators, the FP government and the whale protection agency. We did our research and have written approval before we attempted to swim with Humpback Whales without a guide. At this time 2018/2019 it is legal to swim with the whales in French Polynesia from a private boat...as long as you understand and follow the rules, but most importantly they want you to respect the whales. I truly hope you enjoy this adventure. I (Jason) invested about 3x as many hours as I should have in the video edit, and Nikki scoured through 3000+ images to narrow it down for the article on our site. Das wohl meist verwendete Wort bei uns... Das Segeln an sich... die Segelboote... die Technik und Ausrüstung... Alles ein großer Kompromiss. Größe eines Segelbootes, Preis, Material, Segeleigenschaften... Das geht alles gegeneinander und lässt sich nur schwer miteinander vereinbaren. Wir haben einen Gast eingeladen, der beim Segeln keine Lust auf einen Kompromiss hat, der ihm nicht gefällt. Denn er baut sich seine eigene Segelyacht und nennt das Projekt "Next Generation Yachting". Für seine VOLT ist ein E-Antrieb vorgesehen, weshalb wir natürlich sehr interessiert an dem Thema sind. Das Ziel bei der VOLT ist es Performance, Sicherheit, Nachhaltigkeit und Wirtschaftlichkeit unter einen Hut zu bekommen und ein Segelboot mit möglichst wenig Kompromissen zu bauen. Was genau das Projekt ausmacht und worum es geht, darüber sprechen wir im Podcast. Before the rest of the volunteers arrive, we have to get the huge timbers of the Stern Assembly bedded and fastened into the stern of Tally Ho. First we drill the holes for the bolts, using a 6’ long drill bit in a custom-made jig. Then we lift all the pieces with jacks and ropes, and fill the gaps with Tar and Felt. When they are back in place, the bronze bolts are driven through and tightened up, and lo and behold – the Stern Assembly is ready to accept new Frames, just in the nick of time! The last weeks have been especially hectic, so this video is a little shorter than usual, and hasn’t covered all the amazing work that Arnaud, Finn, Thom, Kirt and Tim have been doing to prepare for our intensive Frame-raising period, which is just beginning! With a looong list of jobs we plan to complete whilst on the hard stand, we are busy in renovating our engine room ready to install our new Yanmar "Fang." We have been lucky to have a fellow Salty sailor wish to help us install the new engine, Uncle Kevin is also a guru fibreglasser after glassing surfboards professionally for over 30 years. This man knows a thing or two about fibreglassing and he takes us through the types of matting we use to reinforce the bearers ready for the new engine mounts to bolt on too. After two weeks on the hard stand our engine room has gone form a oily greasy mess from our old engine to a glistening white solid room ready for our new motor! We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We have just sailed 2000nm through Indonesia and have arrived to Malaysia to complete major boat work, ready for the next big adventure. We departed Australia 18 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced different cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! No it isn’t technically a “weather bomb.” It is the biggest recorded change in wind speed that I have personally encountered though and I was caught with the main fully up. The old boat wouldn’t actually record the numbers and I was always frantically running around pulling ropes so I never could actually tell. This particular one came out of no where and was fierce. You will see what I was doing at the time in a phone-call home to Elayna in not tomorrows episode but the one after if we do indeed upload one every day live I’ve been saying we would. I would argue that it isn’t strictly clickbait, that is more like showing a womans bottom and making a video mostly about changing a car tyre. This is more like when you catch a fish and tell people it was bigger than it was. And so but I am mindful of all the old sailors out there whos bad weather experiences on the water would be diminished by some punk running around with misleading titles on his youtube channel and so this description will serve as both an apology to any people affected and will also be for “the record” whomever is keeping that. Back to the boat upgrades and weather stuff next time, but while we hide out from crazy winds in Pipe Creek in the Exumas, it got me thinking about a question we get from just about every non-sailor when they find out we cruise full time on a little boat: have you ever been in a storm?
