Hello Seaplorers of Vela Nautica In this episode we solved the "engine problem" that we encountered, when leaving, ria formosa / Portugal in the last episode (SAILING IN THE EYE OF STORM ) . The marine growth that settled on our propeller slowed down the engine, so the rpm did not go over 1400 rpm, caused by the water turbulences of the propeller. The diesel engine got an overload turning the prop. Come and follow us under water to inspect Vela Nautica´s underwater ship and the marine life around Gibraltar Rock in the anchorage. As you saw us considering the possible cause for this "engine problem" in the last episode, we have been right supecting the marine growth in ria formosa to be responsible. We encountered this problem before in Santa Marta / Colombia even worst. The rest of the underwatership was freshly painted when Vela Nautica had her last stay on the hard and showed a soft, easy to wipe off, growth of algae´s after 4 months in the water. The Maverick 440 is designed and built for the private owner who wishes to live aboard and sail around the world. It is a go anywhere, stay as long as you want yacht. Every aspect of the interior, systems and equipment can be specified to the owners exact requirements. The Maverick 440 is also considered the ideal sailing craft for the ICW, Inter-Coastal Waterway, as it is available with an ICW friendly rig of less than 62 ft above the waterline. It also has the shallowest draft of any fixed keel catamaran of it's class of just over 3ft and has the ability to be beached / dry out at low tide. Sailing 180 miles from Belitung to Lingga in the Java Sea was a first, made more interesting by the anti-collision tactics we had to employ for the fishing platforms, floating debris and crazy tugs in the water. We had checked out of Indonesia, but there was still a long way to go before leaving Indonesian waters. From experience, we knew the authorities were quite relaxed about giving small sailing yachts plenty of time to leave. We estimated it would take about a week to Malaysia if we took day sails and anchored overnight in the lee of places you won’t find in any cruising or pilot guides. We began on a sunny day in 12-15knts of south-easterly wind, giving us a consistent 5kts of speed. The first stop was just 38 miles north-west of Belitung, a small rock named Gelasa. An hour away from the island a storm blew up, but once safely inside the cove we shared just enough shelter from the swell with local fishing boats. After a decent night’s sleep, we weighed anchor at 6am the following morning ready to make our way towards more desolate anchorages in this far-flung area. To stay on top of the weather, we use an Iridium Go with Predictwind. This gives us a good overall picture of wind direction and speed and has helped us plot anchor points in these remote areas. Our Favourite Anchorage to date! https://www.sailingnandji.com/ In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we arrive to our Ultimate Achorage, the Bay of Plenty in the Banyak islands. This is truly our paradise. Surfing from a sailboat is much harder than you think and finding a place that has an all weather anchorage, zero swell and roll in the anchorage, beautiful white sandy beaches, crystal clear water and then pumping waves a short tender ride away through mangroves, which is almost as much fun as the surf itself! We truly have found what we are looking for! I think once we left we have now decided that we will sail around the world just to come back here!!! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra where we are living the island life and chasing the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we are returning to Thailand in the coming months and then taking the northern route of the Indian Ocean to the Andaman islands and onto Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trades begin again! The adventure is just beginning! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it!
