I know, I know, this Episode is a bit dry. It´s about boat works again. But we got many requests for more detailed description about the setup of our Lithium batteries. That power Vela Nautica and provide electric comfort even when we anchor. So its more interesting for boaters who like to improve their boats. Paul from S/Y Ya Fohi even traveled down to our anchorage at the Algarve to look at the installation in person. One important aspect to many request was also the price tag. Most sailors are not rich, so to invest in an expensive standard batterie system, as offered by some companies, is out of question. We found a way to get a maybe even better performing batterie and BMS for our boat, for a fraction of the price, like usualy offered. We got offers, asking 12.000,- €, only for the batteries half the size of ours, plus nessesary electronics. If you pull these offeres you might well come up with a final price of 15k to 20k. We considered of course also the safety aspect and implemented all kind of fall backs to prevent casualties. Hello Seaplorers of Vela Nautica In this episode we solved the "engine problem" that we encountered, when leaving, ria formosa / Portugal in the last episode (SAILING IN THE EYE OF STORM ) . The marine growth that settled on our propeller slowed down the engine, so the rpm did not go over 1400 rpm, caused by the water turbulences of the propeller. The diesel engine got an overload turning the prop. Come and follow us under water to inspect Vela Nautica´s underwater ship and the marine life around Gibraltar Rock in the anchorage. As you saw us considering the possible cause for this "engine problem" in the last episode, we have been right supecting the marine growth in ria formosa to be responsible. We encountered this problem before in Santa Marta / Colombia even worst. The rest of the underwatership was freshly painted when Vela Nautica had her last stay on the hard and showed a soft, easy to wipe off, growth of algae´s after 4 months in the water. Hello Seaplorers of Vela Nautica In this episode we sailed first time long distance since Vela Nautica got her refit. Unfortunately it was very rough and we encountered a storm. The tidal currents and the continental shelf in the bay of Cadiz made sailing very uncomfortable. Vela Nautica was thrown by crossing confused seas and overcoming waves. It became even more diffcult as more and more traffic came up over night and made navigating more tireing. It was not a fun sailing at all, but what they say is YOU ARE NOT A SAILOR IF YOU ONLY SAILED IN A CALM DAY. We where bound for Gibraltar, while considering to search shelter in the closer harbour of Cadiz we decided to go on and head for Gibraltar as we visited Cadiz before. And as always after rain there is sunshine and we droped anchor in sunny conditions under the ROCK OF GIBRALTAR. In this episode of our cruising life we show you how we switched Vela Nautica to Lithium power and integrated a lithium batterie in the ships energie system. This giant change is part of the extensive refit we spend our Vela Nautica to get her ready for more adventures. The change to Lithium power is an archievement that improved the comfort, living on this boat, for 100%. We choose the thorny way and did not use the overpriced "drop in" batteries, that are offered for boats. We build one huge batterie with 14.4 kWh controlled by an PowerBMS controller. This controller is accesible by WiFi and shows all batterie data and alarm systems.
