Quand nous avons décidé de faire notre tour du monde en voilier, nous ne connaissions rien à la voile et aux bateaux. Nous avons tout de même passé un permis mer pour nous sentir plus en sécurité. Ensuite l’achat du voilier, sa préparation très rapide par manque de temps et hop, nous-voilà parti en tdm. La transat, nous l’avons fait en équipage réduit, seulement à deux. Pour une simple raison. Nous ne voulions pas prendre la responsabilité d’autres personnes au cas où quelque chose arriverait. Aucune transatlantique ne se ressemble. La nôtre a été assez agitée avec des vents forts, de la houle croisée, beaucoup de nuages et du roulis permanent. Une transat est très fatigante et comporte des risques. Tout peut tomber en panne à n’importe quel moment. C’est ce qui nous est arrivé. Moteur en panne et par conséquent, impossible de recharger les batteries. Il fallait barrer pendant deux jours jusqu’à ce que, grâce au téléphone satellite Iridium Go, on a pu nous donner la marche à suivre pour nous dépanner. Nous avons pu avoir un autre gros souci : panne de l’autopilote. Alors là, ça aurait été une catastrophe pendant une transat à l’équipage réduite. Par chance, l’autopilote est tombé en panne juste après la transat. La traversée de l’océan est une aventure et nous étions bien contents d’être arrivé sains et saufs.

It's 2020 and time to act on our fossil fuel consumption. If you're keen to minimise your environmental impact seriously, then look to traditional and alternative methods of travel and navigation. The Pacific Proa was first launched in the 1200's. Usually consisting of two parallel hulls of unequal length, the smaller of the two is kept to windward while tacking involves 'shunting' the main which rotates and the dual direction hull is reversed. Despite the advances in boat building throughout the decades, the Proa's simple construction and sailing technique has little changed, requiring only the wind and a base of water to move at considerable speed. Gaiasdream* is a Pacific Proa which follows the same principals and design as the traditional proa using sustainable materials for propulsion where we see vegetable oil replacing diesel. Built by esteemed yacht designer and navigator Yvette Wijnen, she is the largest known Proa of her kind in the world. Still hanging out in Key West working on some final touches before we officially start our trip. Had some friends over for a New Years brunch, and were spoiled with some chefs aboard. Learned some massage techniques to soothe our sore muscles after the long sailing days to come. Took a family trip out to Mule Key for the night buddy boating with our sailor friend Mike. We sailed a brand new Corsair 37 from Tahiti to Tikehau, straight after commissioning her. Big question was how would a trimaran handle the trip ? It's a 175 nautical miles journey upwind right in the rainy season (meaning big squalls all night) before we reach the calm turquoise waters inside the lagoon. Not only did she sail very fast but she proved very stable, super easy to manage and with enough room inside to welcome 5 people for a night at sea. Amazingly enough we did not break anything which normally never happens on a new boat! She is also super cool to steer. We tried the autopilot but quickly went back to manual steering as it was so thrilling. Definitely a big winner, that I would not be scared to sail across oceans while delivering top performance and pleasure. On all Seamester voyages, you and your fellow students serve as active members of the crew. This includes the unique and challenging role of creating meals for everyone on board. Once every 20-30 days, you and another crew member will be responsible, for making breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the entire crew. So what is the food like? That’s really up to whoever is the head chef that day. A few days before your turn as head chef you’ll be asked to write up your meal plans for that day, plus all of the ingredients you’ll need to make it happen. While it's somewhat of a blank canvas, you’ll have to keep in mind things like the boat's current location, supplies on board, and ingredients available at our next port, as well as options to provide for students with dietary restrictions and allergies. At most ports-of-call, a provisioning team will visit the local grocery store and markets to fill up a small convoy of shopping carts with fresh produce and food. After returning to the vessel with the supplies, you'll work as a team to store the provisions into every nook and cranny for the days ahead. When it's your day as the head chef, you’ll find all your ingredients and spend time in the galley, alongside your sous-chef, bringing your recipes to life. Whether you fancy yourself as the next Top Chef or feel like Mac n’ Cheese is more your comfort level, your staff will be there to help guide you through your cooking experience. When your culinary creation is ready, it's time to gather on deck to enjoy your delicious home-cooked dinner with your crew while you take in the beautiful views from a life at sea.

Life is better SAILING | 92 | Beau and Brandy Sailing When we set out last year, we knew we had some experience to gain, lessons to learn and growing to do. What better way to learn to sail your sailboat than to sail it. We love having an electric engine, but we don’t use it a lot. We tend to only use it to motor in and out of tight anchorages. Since untying the lines and heading across to the Bahamas we have sailed over 3000 nautical miles. We also left without and still don’t have an autopilot, so that means either one of us is behind the helm at all times. It's tiring and exhilarating all in one. We love to feel the wind. We love the art of sailing. It's time for the daunting task of crossing the North Sea! On this episode of WE| Sail, we venture back out into the heart of Guatemala's rainforests and jungles to explore some extremely beautiful remote regions. First up is Semuc Champey, and area with blue green waterfalls, deep hidden caves, and stunning beauty in all directions. After a rough bus ride there, we spend four days taking full advantage of all this are has to offer. Next, we make our way by bus to the northernmost area of Guatemala where there are famous ancient Mayan ruins that rival almost any others archaeological sights known today. After a week on a mooring in Les Saintes with violent gusts and plenty of showers we take the first chance to cross towards Basse Terre along the west coast of Guadeloupe. Idéfix and Mareas have survived it a day before so we should be OK. Where the forecast mentions gusts up to 25 knots we have constant winds between 27 and 30 knots, as we reach the corner of the mainland it even increases twice up to 40 knots. Good idea of the captain to go out with 2 reefs and a reefed jib. The wind is from the beam, so Greatcircle isn't bothered to much with the wind nor the waves. Well behind the islands we get similar conditions compared to what we had before on the leeside of the islands we have already passed. Changing winds in force and direction, until it's totally gone and/or right on the nose. First stop is at Jacques Cousteau's Pigeon Island, a natural reserve with a good anchorage just next to it. After that we make a second stop at Deshaies, very protected but even here the larger swell from the NW finds a way to bend around the corner. We visit the botanical garden, just a mile outside the village. The last day we finalize the interior photo's as Michiel from Wehmeijer Yacht Brokers is preparing the listing for the current Greatcircle, Now that Outremer has announced the new model 55 on Boot we're preparing to sell the L52S this year on our way to Boston. 2021 is going the be all about the new boat.
