Hear from Ed Furry of Sail22 on the Harken SnubbAir. First designed to solve a deck layout challenge unique to the J/70, the Harken SnubbAir looks like a smaller, more efficient version of the winch it replaces. It looks like a winch. It mounts like a winch. It cranks like a winch. It’s not a winch. It could act more like a really large ratcheting foot, cheek block, or even a ratcheting line diverter in the pit. The SnubbAir provides lots of line-holding power even without a winch handle. That muscle could become very popular on an A Scow or a powered-up sport boat where the spinnakers can be more than a handful. Even better, you can just flip the sheet off the drum and jibe. If you need even more holding power, wrap the sheet around the SnubbAir twice or use a winch handle with the optional adapter. SnubbAir comes with four integral threaded studs placed to precisely match the bolt pattern of the B8A winch on the J/70 deck. Start-to-finish, swapping out winches for SnubbAirs takes less than 10 minutes. All washers and Nylok® nuts required for mounting are included.

Depending on your Seamester voyage, passages between ports of call can range anywhere from a short 4-hour sail up to 18 days at sea. While it takes the entire crew to raise the anchor and set sail, once you're underway, it only takes a handful of the crew to stand watch and maintain the proper course. As a Seamester student, you play an active part of that crew and will be responsible for standing watch alongside your staff. The crew is typically split into three watch teams. Watches run continuously from the time the vessel leaves port until the anchor drops at our next destination. The standard watch schedule is usually 4 hours on, followed by 8 hours off. Each watch team is paired with at least one staff member, and each member of the watch will alternate through the following primary duties to ensure the safe passage of the vessel. Helmsperson: On the helm, you are the ship's pilot, using compass and GPS navigation to guide the vessel along its plotted course. Bow Watch: At least one crew member must stand watch at the bow of the vessel. Serving as the eyes of the helmsperson, you'll look out for other ships and navigational hazards while occasionally being joined by some oceanic visitors. Boat Check: Lastly, it's of vital importance to monitor all vessel systems. Every hour you'll do a ship walkthrough, checking things like rigging, battery voltage, and fluid levels, and recording the vessel position in the ship's log. As a watch team member, knowing that YOU are in charge of the vessel’s safe passage across the world’s oceans gives you an incredible sense of responsibility and accomplishment, one that you won’t find with any other study abroad program.

The French fish stew recipe Bouillabaisse is one of many fish stews made in the Mediterranean, each region has a slightly different version. In Sardinia, fishermen make a stew out of fish, calamari, mussels, crab, or whatever is on hand, along with tomatoes, potatoes, celery, herbs, and important… wine, saffron, and hot chilly pepper. In this video, we start in Gibraltar and end up in Tanger, Morocco, after welcoming the crew that will sail with us to the Canaries.  We were not gonna take any crew on any of our passages across the Atlantic, but when friends of ours (who we met through these videos!) expressed their wish to acquire a little more offshore experience ahead of their own boat purchase and cruising life, we invited two couples to sail with us from Gibraltar to Lanzarote, and from Lanzarote to Cape Verde.  Our first crew, Linnea and Kelly, joined us just a few days after selling their apartment, packing their belongings in a bag-pack and leaving their hometown to go buy a boat and live the sailing life.  And it all starts on Polar Seal, where we set sail from Gibraltar!  The Strait of Gibraltar is notorious for its many shifting currents and the heavy ship traffic that goes through its narrow body of water every day. Water water everywhere and it is all salt water which does not do us any good (except to float on) UNTIL NOW! We recently installed a Rainman Watermaker (aka desalination unit) aboard our boat and can now desalinate salt water!!! Here is the link to the Rainman website for more info about the watermaker we installed. http://bit.ly/Rainmam *According to Rainman the output of this unit is 26-37gph depending on water temperature. We have been seeing the high side of this output scale in the warm Caribbean water. *Everything that we needed for install came with our rainman unit including valves, fittings, filters, filter housings and mounts, pex tubing, even hose clamps. The only thing that I had to get additionally was a sea water strainer and a short length of pvc hose. On the 28th October 2019 we moved Saoirse from the spot that had been her home for 8 years, back to the ocean where she belonged. It was a long and super stressful day that we will always remember fondly. We decided to get her launched when we did, before she was complete because we wanted to start living the dream . We also had to head back to Ballito for 2-3 weeks for Teagan and Colben's wedding and we wanted her settled in our new home before leaving. Each step in this journey, from the day we signed for her, each day and night spent working on her and all the forward planning, has been important but this step just seemed to surpass everything up to this point. This day seemed to encompass every possible emotion, in trepidation, excitement, sheer terror but overwhelmingly, a real sense of accomplishment. The sudden realization that we finally owned a yacht that was on the ocean and the world was now our oyster - 7 years of dreaming and planning had finally come to fruition.
