This week we spend some time fishing on the small powerboat in Gasparillo Sound at the Boca Granda Pass. The fishing wasn't great, but the friends were, the relaxation was great, and the planning and discussing the trip and work to get DreamChaser sailed across the Gulf was productive. We spend some time and talk about the work we are doing/having done on the Formosa 51 in preparation for the trip across. I am looking forward to doing it and getting nervous all at the same time. We found someone to do work for us on the boat and so far I have been pleased with it. Angie from Saltwater Marine in Mandeville, LA, has come highly referred from others that have boats in our marina. She is an electrical engineer by trade and has been helping out with electrical and other work as well. With a large northern cold front headed their way, Captain James, Captain Josh and Larry raced all night across the Gulf Stream. The crew starts in the Port Everglades and headed to south Bimini, where they anchored after a 12 hour crossing. With reports of the north Bimini channel being improperly marked and experiencing heavy shoaling, James braved the seas in the dinghy (Mrs.Kitty) to take a look at the current conditions of the channel entrance. Next task - clearing into customs and immigration. With the blow building, the guys caught & cleaned some conch and tucked in at south Bimini for the night. The next day the north swell increased to 6-8 foot seas with winds blowing 25 knots, forecasted to clock around from the east. With those conditions, north Bimini was out of the question for entry. The little hide out left them exposed to the east. So, they sailed south to Cat Cay and anchored up for the night on the south west side. The next day the guys all went for a dinghy adventure, exploring south Cat Cay and hunted the shallows for lunch. The following day the seas layed down, and with the wind out of the east, the crew sailed north and finally entered north bimini channel. They docked up at the world famous Bimini Big Game Club. They walked around and reminisced of past trips to this historic island, enjoyed the sunset on radio beach with coconut drinks. Followed up with dinner at the club and lots of stories. After a late night, the guys finally caught some sleep and awoke early for the crossing back to Florida. Thanks to Josh and Larry for the spontaneous adventure. After the pretty anchorage Fury Cove we continue further north to Sheerwater Marina and Get to sail Pesistance with full sails up. What a treat!!! We have a spare day to plan and the Captain lets me chose a destination, how exciting! I decide for the picturesque and slightly remote Kynoch Inlet which presents itself as a win in the lottery! Apart from hundreds of waterfalls and an impressive scenery, we get to see six grizzly bears on shore, three of them being cubs. I think this will go into the books as one of the most precious moments of my life! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. What a way to start Season 4... That was NOT intentional by any means. What we thought will be a simple few hours sail became one of the most challenging passage. All started well - friends saying farewell and we even got some wind, where for 3 months in Indonesia we had to motor almost all the time. We had beautiful views into the Singapore and felt elated starting new season and about to arrive to Malaysia. Singapore and Malacca strait - one of the busiest places in the world, so we didn't think it's gonna be a breeze, but did not expected this tuff navigation. And did not expected to be pulled over by the Police. In the beginning it was all jokes but after 2 hours we felt more and more uneasy and worried. Finally after 2.5 hours we were let go. It's sunset and we still have hour and a half to go to unknown territories into unknown marina... And we are the ones advising everyone not to sail at night... Oh well... Navigating in a busy place at night is no fun. Also no fun going under the bridge or arriving to marina after work hours in pitch dark, but we did all of this! Join us! EP 115 We finally test our sails on a yacht we built! We were so excited to test out our Spinnaker! It was magical and we were so happy to see her rainbow colors flying. We test out our Genoa, Inner Jib and our Main as well. Think she's good to go now and we have gotten her set up pretty good enough to start making our way to the Cape.
