We finally go sailing down the Wild Coast of South Africa using our marine electronics, to help us navigate, and get weather predictions, as well as ocean current models. We don’t want stormy weather, and we don’t want wind or current against us! We use the sailing app called Predictwind Offshore, to get weather at sea, including wind forecasts and current models, through the Iridium GO. We also use AIS, and our Raymarine chartplotter and Radar, and other marine electronics and Navionics charts to navigate safely as we sail around the Cape of Storms, in lots of current and wind! These marine electronics are so useful for offshore sailing Africa, and crossing oceans! Patrick Childress demonstrates tips and tricks for using the Monitor self steering vane while the crew battles seasickness for a solid 24 hours. We navigate in the dark and anchor in East London, South Africa, to rest and wait for less stormy weather to continue our offshore passage around Cape Agulhas and the Cape of Good Hope. In our quest to nail down great recipes and techniques for our Kimberley trip, Wendy makes pesto out of the Woolworth’s basil which began as little seedlings on Nutshell. This pesto will be put into a sterilised jar and covered in olive oil. We’ll see how it survives. Wendy continues with the dodger and sews in a clear. We head out to the Whitsunday Islands to Stonehaven Anchorage with our youngest daughter, Emily, on board and have a poke around with Peanut IV. We are testing out Nutshell and Peanut IV. We play a little beach cricket, because we can and Magnus fixes the cable on Wally so we have steering again, yay! Crossing the Gulf Stream can be quite daunting but with some planning and preparation, it's actually an easy crossing. Never leave unless the wind is from the south! The wind cycles around the clock so it's just a matter of being patient and picking your window. The Gulf Stream runs at around 3 knots so as long as it's in your favour, which it was for us, it can help to speed you across to the USA. We arrived in America at Fort Lauderdale and our marina in Hollywood is an hour motor to the south passing thru 3 bridges which all have to left before you can pass thru. This week the lockdown in Spain eased slightly with children being allowed out of their homes for short walks for the first time. Like the rest of the world, Spain is wary of a second wave of Covid-19 infections. We are unable to sail except within this inland sea. We have spent our days riding the cycle of weather, water shortages and needing more gas. This time I think we nailed the gas situation with two large bottles donated by Manny’s Bar. Thank you. Also, weather allowing, we have been able to go for some exercise on the deserted island nearby and Steve visited a wooden boat belonging to one of our patrons to check it was ok. Douzième jour de confinement au milieu de la grande bleue … Difficilement Black Lion lutte pour rester sur un cap Ouest mais les courants qui étaient jusque-là en notre faveur s’attachent à compliquer un peu notre croisière de rêve ! Ils ont commencé traitreusement à nous agresser en pleine nuit, agitant notre chambrée comme un shaker ! J’ai peine à croire que le rhum équatorien y soit pour quelque chose, 3 jours que l’océan en a eu sa petite giclée, nous sommes déjà le 2 avril, si son désir était d’en tirer un bon cocktail, il s’y serait pris plut tôt ! Plus sérieusement, les grains noirs qui se forment et déforment aux alentours ont des airs patibulaires, je serais prête à parier qu’ils entretiennent des relations étroites avec nos assaillants. Serions-nous juste une distraction pour ces « malmeneurs » ? En collaborant, ils se sont entendus à nous pourrir notre repos ! Et avant que l’un vienne désagréablement investir notre écran radar par son écho, l’autre s’est ébroué par trois fois à animer énergiquement son flux. Trois heures du matin est-elle une heure cruciale en mer, car bien sou-vent, nous avons remarqué que c’est justement à cette heure qu’il peut se passer quelque chose ! Je sais qu’il faut que nous restions sur nos gardes mais en sachant Cyril au poste de commande, je m’assoupie et quand mon engourdissement s’étend, j’attends au loin, mon capitaine me chuchoter à l’oreille qu’un puissant grain s’approche dangereusement de nous par l’arrière ! Illico, tel un suricate à l’affût, je me redresse et m’apprête vigoureusement à porter mains fortes à l’équipage et là, suivie de ses gloussements moqueurs, mon goujat amusé de ma réaction, se lance dans un sketch très largement parodié de mon comportement ! L’humoriste, prêt à tout pour détendre l’atmosphère, imagine sa petite femme, la tête dans ses épaules se préparant à l’abandon du navire avec sous les bras, sa cocotte-minute et son fouet de cuisine ! Nous n’avons pas eu à utiliser la chaloupe ! Tout va bien, l’orage a continué sa course vers le sud sans nous toucher mais tous ces caprices du temps nous font avancer qu’à 5,7 nœuds alors que nous faisions des surfs à 9. 136,8 milles depuis hier et nous voilà aux 1º29'101 S et 64º35'518 E. La force réduite de vent nous a permis de relancer le gennak mais la mer reste agitée. Pris entre nos deux voiles, l’air prend de la puissance et sans que l’on se doute de quoi que ce soit, un grand choc nous tire de nos occupations ! C’est la goupille de la poulie du gennak qui vient de casser. L’avarie n’est pas très grave, nous transmutons celle de tribord sur bâbord et faisons en sorte de réparer la souffrante avec un bout de dynema. Ce qui nous ennuis le plus ce sont les deux leurres encore emportés par nos proies, nous en sommes aux septièmes et en plus d’être dégoutés de n’avoir presque plus d’appâts pour nous nourrir, nous sommes contrariés de polluer involontairement ! Le soleil couchant d’hier nous a fait craindre que s’en était fini pour nos crépuscules teintés mais celui de ce soir impose ses belles carnations. En le regardant descendre sous l’horizon, nous nous sentons bousculés par les nouvelles qui nous viennent du monde. Notre incertitude s’amplifie…nous doutons !

Energy balls - Recipe Ingredients: • 90g (1 cup) oats • 30g (¼ cup) milled chia seed1 • 30g (¼ cup) milled flaxseed1 • 160g (2/3 cup) almond butter2 • 100g (¼ cup + 1 tbsp) maple syrup (or honey) • 60g (½ cup) dried cranberries3 Method: 1. Place a sheet of baking paper onto a baking tray or chopping board. 2. Add all ingredients to a large mixing bowl and stir to fully combine. 3. Lightly grease your hands with some vegetable or coconut oil and use your hands to mould the mixture into approximately 12-15 balls. 4. Place these on the pre-prepare baking paper and they are ready to eat immediately or can be stored in an air-tight container for sailing snacks!4 Recipe notes: 1 You can use any ground seeds here at long as they equal ½ cup in total. 2 Almond butter can be substituted for peanut or cashew butter. You can make your own if you are feeling very adventurous! 3 The cranberries can be substituted for any dried fruit, chopped nuts or chocolate chips but I would recommend sticking to approximately ½-¾ cup or the balls may not bind together, and note that this will alter the nutritional information. 4 If you are making them more a few days in advance, store them in the fridge for up to a week or you can freeze them for up to 3 months. They will become dry and crumbly as they get older so I would recommend making them as fresh as possible.
