For additional details pertinent to this video please read the description below. Once you have become proficient at backing your boat in a straight line the next logical progression is to practice backing into your slip. Some of the advantages of your boat being backed into the slip: • Easier departure getaway, you are heading in the right direction • You have a pilothouse view of the marina surroundings • Your cockpit aft is facing the docks so you can be more social • Easier disconnect with shore power if you have it installed aft Backing, like most docking maneuvers, is better when you are operating at slow speeds. Make sure you have your fenders ready and spring line secure as you approach the slip you are going to back into. As the helmsperson it is your charge to position your boat correctly. You can really improve your finesse with a trusted crew member who can relay distances to surrounding obstacles (other vessels and docks). The trusted crew member should provide estimated clearance in measurements, example “Stern is 10 feet away” and not just tell you when to move forward, aft or stop. As the helmsman you need to be ready to change forward and aft directions immediately - but softly, no heavy throttle shifting, just ease the gear shift lever. Patience is important, thrusters can help. The alignment of your bow and stern in relation to being parallel to the dock requires the skipper to continually look forward and aft to adjust for orientation. Parking your boat stern-in has many advantages and is a worthy skill to master. When you are in position and can get your spring line connected the hard work is over. Handling dock lines and tying up at your final destination is the subject of our next video. After almost 4500 of race since Cape Town, having got more than 60kts o wind in the southern Ocean, we were not expecting for things to go wrong at that point... but Josh's bd cake got drenched by an unfriendly wave. Anyway, this did not broke the morale of the crew. See vlog 31 for our best dolphin footage ever :) On the 17th of April 2020 we left marina Port Ghalib in Egypt, heading south towards Sudan and Djibouti and finally Maldives. We will take it easy, enjoy the beautiful reefs of the red sea and keep an eye on the corona regulations of the ports we pass. Since many countries are closed we don't know where we will be allowed to go on land again, but we can survive 4 month without seeing anybody :) This journey is only a small part of our trip that started 2 years ago. This is the true story of the raft they built using 100% environmentally friendly New Zealand Flax to send that message during the Covid-19 lockdown. The wind and tides must have wanted Alex, Amelia and Bianca to receive the message because unbelievably it landed just 25m from their cousins house after the 5.7km unmanned sail from Te Atatu Peninsula to Coxs Bay. Catamaran Anchorage for Christmas Abaiang A Chilled out Christmas in Kiribati. Episode 64 This week we explore the crystal clear blue waters on the western side of Abaing atoll in Kiribati. It makes for some amazing Darren-tastic drone shots.... There are uninhabited, coconut tree covered sand islands, a small eco resort and not much else! After spending a very rolly night at anchor near one of the ocean passes, we seek a bit more shelter in front of Teirio Island Resort. This small eco resort has five local style bungalows, a communal dining area and a great outlook. Derek , the owner, makes us very welcome and introduces us to his only two guests ; Ken and Steve who are visiting from the UK. We share the same warped sense of humour and get along famously. We are even invited to join them on a snorkelling trip up to Manra island on the North western side of the atoll. In the blink of an eye , Christmas Day rolls around. After a kayak session and walk on the beach , we celebrate with a bit of a cook-up. We enjoy a magnificent lentil loaf with all the trimmings, followed by a lovely pineapple upside down cake.
