This episode continues to share the reality of passages, the reality of the day in and the day out of continuous sailing to destinations days or more away... We get some great winds that give us awesome speeds, but the seas continue to keep us on our butts lol! Day trip Island hopping throughout the Windward a Leeward islands of the Caribbean does not compare with passages that include 3 or more days, let alone the month long passage it takes to cross the Pacific Ocean to that first landfall. Trade winds of the Caribbean are a wonderful thing for longer passages, if you can handle them. Please consider supporting our videos on Patreon. Well the first set of locks in the Panama Canal were EPIC! It's time for round two! In this episode we cruise through Gatun Lake, then the Culebra Cut and into the second set of locks, the Pedro Miguel and the Miraflores Locks. But we get caught up in a crazy storm while transiting! What an adventure! Help us keep the videos coming with a little support on Patreon Click the link to show your support; https://www.patreon.com/c/triotravels Our Sailing Catamaran is a 42 foot Fountaine Pajot Venezia. We purchased it in Florida. It had been neglected and forgotten. In Florida we did an extensive re-fit and refurbish getting it ready for blue water sailing and thousands of miles. Of course along the way and in many different countries we did many more upgrades and improvements to our sailing home. Take the time to go back and see what we did and how we did it as we sail over 30,000 Nautical miles in Saltair 3.

In this episode Trio Travels along with some of our best friends as crew transits the Panama Canal from the Caribbean to the Pacific. We transit the first lock in the dark and with a 38' monohull sailboat tied to our side and we spend the night in Gatun Lake tide up to a huge floating cement mooring ball. The video might be a little long for some, but the transit was just too epic not to include the footage I did. Cheers Friends and Followers!

In this episode we leave the bay islands of Honduras and start our 5 day passage for the Panama Canal, and what a brisk passage it was! Big seas, strong winds and some great sailing with fast speeds, but zero Pirates! The area off the coast of Honduras and Nicaragua is known as the Honduran Banks, but to every sailor cruising through these waters heading south, it is known as the Pirate waters of the Caribbean. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live on a sail boat in the tropical ocean? Watch and learn how we did it for almost 8 years on our 42' Fountain Pajot Catamaran in the Caribbean Sea, the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez... Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live on a sail boat in the tropical ocean? Watch and learn how we did it for almost 8 years on our 42' Fountain Pajot Catamaran in the Caribbean Sea and beyond... In this episode we continue our journey towards the Panama Canal with a stop at the Bay Islands of Honduras. A quick provision on the island or Roatan, then we're off to the small island of Guanaja where we check out with customs and immigration and Cole catches a Big Mahi Mahi fish!

Krista; "How's it going... Are we gonna sink!?" No one ever wants to see water flooding the floor boards of their boat let alone when you are miles off shore without land in sight, but that's what happened to us on our way to the islands of Honduras. Never mind that this area is known for Pirate activity against sailboats, but this night sail to Honduras is full of storms too! But as always, the crew of Saltair3 pulls it off and the skies turn blue as we arrive at the island of Utila and then onto the island of Roatan. Next stop the PANAMA CANAL!!! If you want to know the full details of why we were sinking and so much more, consider joining us on Patreon patreon.com/triotravels and ask us anything you want to know about our adventures. Cheers! The Rio Dulce or "Sweet River" is an approximately 25 mile long winding fresh water river in the Guatemalan jungle that leads to the Caribbean Sea. It is an amazing place in the world and an extreme privilege to explore if you live on a boat. We spent a of couple months living on our 42' catamaran 'Saltair3' in this jungle paradise. For Sailors/Cruisers the Rio Dulce has been called the "Velcro River" and for so many good reasons. Basically it's hard to leave because of it's beauty and being a safe harbour. But it's mid December and time for this sailing Trio to say a fond farewell. We are off the dock and making our way to the Panama Canal! Good bye to the town of Fronteras. One last cruise down the gorgeous Rio Dulce "Sweet River" of Guatemala and out to the Caribbean sea, but first a stop at Tom the riggers place in Texan Bay to exchange a main sail batten. As far as Fireworks for Protection goes... when we sail for the Panama Canal we will have to navigate through the Pirate waters off the coast of Honduras. We don't carry weapons onboard so should we be chased by pirates... one line of defence (among others) is to toss large fireworks (what look like mini dynamite sticks) at our attackers. It's paranoia at this point, but defence just the same. Getting 1st world sailing supplies in a 3rd world country can be challenging. In this episode it's December and we’re provisioning in Rio Dulce Guatemala, we share our thoughts on and give a short tour of the marina that we kept Saltair3 in, we get a new awesome Mantus anchor, and we share this Sailing Trio's season's plans of "where to next" for us. In order to get back to our catamaran "Saltair3" in the Rio Dulce of Guatemala, you must first fly into Guatemala city, (the capital) and then you take a crazy and long 8 hour bus ride (8 hours if you're lucky) back to the Rio, where the marinas and our catamaran are. But before returning to "Saltair3" in Rio Dulce Guatemala, where we left if for Hurricane season, we spent a few weeks in the ancient city of Antigua learning Spanish in an immersion school. While we were there we did an EPIC and exhausting hike to the top of the Acatenango Volcano. There are 37 Volcanoes in Guatemala and 3 are in the Antigua area. 2 of the 3 are active! It was a 5-6 hour hike to the top 13,044 ft at a consistent 45 degree angle of incline! At this altitude we experienced altitude sickness for the first time. It's a real thing! In fact aviation requires the use of supplemental oxygen at altitudes above 10,000 feet. The tour company that guided us up the Volcano, keeps a camp at the summit and this is where we slept for this 2 day and one night insane hike up, and boy it was COLD up there! P.S. We had to carry food and water for our meals. Cole led the group right to the top, and Brad and Krista brought up the rear. LOL! An Amazing Experience for sure... Hurricane season is coming to an end and we are back on Saltair3 in the Rio Dulce of Guatemala. In this episode we prep SA3 for another epic season! Un pickling the water maker, putting the sails back on, minor repairs and some fun in the fresh waters of tropical Guatemala. Stay Tuned because we are leaving the Caribbean and heading for the Pacific! That means transiting the Panama Canal...

It's been almost 8 years since we sold almost everything we owned, moved onto a sailboat and set sail to see the world on our Catamaran Saltair3. That was 2014 and Cole was just 8 yeas old. We're now back on Vancouver Island. Many of you won't even remember where or when the adventure started for this sailing Trio... This is a hybrid video of where we came from, why we did it and some fun footage of our time in one of our favourite Caribbean nations, the Dominican Republic. We have since sold Saltair 3 and moved back to our home on Vancouver Island where we have our summer food truck business and a tiny home in Cassidy near the Nanaimo airport. Instead of a sailing catamaran we now have a small power boat, an airplane and motorcycles both off road and street cycles, all to try and satisfy our adventure adrenaline habit Lol! Cheers, Brad, Krista and Cole

In this episode; Sailing exploration doesn't get better than this! We're at anchor in Cayo Quemado up the Rio Dulce of Guatemala and we've made friends with a local Guatemalan family. Off the back of SA3 we bought some of their crafts and they invited us to see their little river home (Casa) up a maze of estuaries connecting to the River. So the following day after a nice breakfast we follow them in our dinghy through gorgeous back waters leading to their home. This is what exploring by Sailboat is all about! It doesn't get better than this! Enjoy the show. Get more by joining us on Patreon. In this episode; Ever wondered what it would be like to explore an exotic Central American Jungle River...? In this episode we leave our catamaran at anchor and set off exploring in the dinghy. The Rio Dulce (Sweet River) of Guatemala holds a maze of off shooting estuaries that are home to small tight nit communities of Guatemala people living off the land and the water. These people don't have much more than a 12 volt car battery or two for power and live a simple life. With gifts and cookies in hand we set out to share with them some of what we have and some of what we no longer need aboard our floating home, catamaran Saltair3. Enjoy the show.
