In this episode we continue our hop down the Exuma island chain, taking care of some important to-do's as we go: A huge load of laundry and the ever present task of finding wifi good enough to upload a video! Theres no prettier place to take care of these chores though and it's always fun to discover new places - It's our favourite aspect of cruising (tied with making new cruiser friends :)). Now in mid February we are finally starting to see the occasional day with lighter wind forecasts and after MUCH anticipation have the opportunity to fly our new code zero. There's always a boat project going on in cruiser life, many unexciting, but upgrading our sail inventory to include this bad-ass, super versatile and easy to use gennaker on a furler was easily the best addition we've made in a long time (though arguably in line with our new windless!). Our boat only holds 20 gallons of diesel in the main tank so the having the ability to continue sailing in light air offshore is essential. Handing the sail is a breeze since we added a continuous line furler. After our two trans-Atlantic's we decided that having an expanded sail inventory was a top priority for us if we want to continue making long offshore passages (which we very much do) so seeing this project through it's completion and then having the chance to practice with our new sail in the beautiful Bahamas water has been fantastic. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Thanks to our Patrons! Saímos de Natal e fomos ate o Caribe. 6 meses navegando por uma das regiões mais bonitas do mundo. Depois atravessamos o canal do Panamá e seguimos em direção a Polinésia Francesa, depois Cook Islands, Tonga, Fije, reconhecidos como os lugares mais espetaculares do planeta. Daí tomei a decisão de passar a temporada de furacão abrigado na Nova Zelândia. Ao final da temporada, atravessando o Mar da Tasmânia o pesadelo de todo velejador aconteceu. Uma tempestade gigantesca nos atingiu e o barco capotou. Foram 48 horas lutando para sobreviver, com ventos que ultrapassavam 100 km/h. Foi o pior momento de toda a viagem! Durante a tempestade, só pensei em sobreviver e quando passou, o medo tomou conta de mim e depois de mais de 25 anos sonhando com a ideia de dar uma volta ao mundo, pensei seriamente em desistir. Da die schwedischen Schären im Juli extrem voll sind, verweilen wir nur kurz in diesem Irrsinn. Daher gibt es nur noch drei Stationen in Schweden bevor es zu den Ålands geht. Die erste Station ist Utö, die Ferieninsel der Schweden. Sehr schön aber auch sehr voll. Gut, dass wir in einer recht ruhigen Bucht an einer Boje hängen. Nach ein paar Tagen geht’s es weiter in den Norden bis nach Gräddö. Ein Hafen und Städtchen, was wir als nicht sehr schön empfunden haben und sicher nicht noch einmal anlaufen würden. Our friends from Prosail took us on a reef mission, unfortunately we had no time to get to sail on one of their 3 Maxi sailing yacht they take regularly on charter to explore the Whitsundays: https://www.facebook.com/Prosail/ Then we set sails for China, it was a good race, we made some great move and led for most of the race, but something unexpected came up.... you guessed it, COVID-19 virus. The race was diverted to Philippines and we lost our hard won lead in the final windholes in the lee of Luzon Island, but 3rd place isn't bad. The next race would take us around some Japanese Island near Taiwan and back to Subic Bay. That race didn't went well, we were missing pure speed (rudder alignment issue) and maybe the right rythm. Because of the virus, the race schedule had to be reshuffled, and the following race was a triangular race around some virtual marks around the South China sea, and we managed to get back on the horse and won that race! Como eu já tinha dito anteriormente aqui, a subida do Caribe impões um ritmo quase frenético para quem se dispõe a conhecer o maior número de ilhas possíveis e aproveitar ao máximo a temporada para conhecer as diferentes culturas e bandeiras dos países daqui. Por isso, a ideia de ficarmos ancorados por um mês (que depois viraram três) foi muito bem vinda. Nosso condomínio marítimo, a baía de Brewers Bay, chegou a ter quase 60 barcos. Em respeito à quarentena nós não interagíamos muito com os demais barcos, apenas entre nós (a reunião de mais de 10 pessoas era proibida). Mas era divertido observar nossos vizinhos em suas quarentenas privadas, fazendo dos limões da pandemia limonadas com seus veleiros que acabaram virando balanços com vela, cipós com adriças e coqueiros com redes improvisadas. Tudo ia muito bem, obrigada. Mas com os casos crescendo (de 3 para 51 contaminados com a covid-19) as praias foram fechadas. Ficamos sabendo no dia anterior à medida e na manhã seguinte fomos surpreendidos com um hammer e oficiais fardados (com aquelas camuflagens de deserto mais clara e bege) caminhando na praia para deixar bem claro que ninguém podia estar ali. Nem para passer com cachorro, nem para deixar o lixo. Ninguém podia pisar na areia, só para acessar à cidade se precisasse de algum serviço essencial. Quem precisa de praia (que nem era tão linda assim) quando se está ancorado em um fundo de corais maravilhosos? Eu e Sergio mergulhamos em cada centímetro quadrado dessa baía. Era uma caída, uma surpresa! Moréias, polvos, arraias, peixes, poliquetas e corais de todas as cores e formatos. Eu me apaixonei por eles e virei a brisalina dos corais. Sergio ia nadando e eu ia ficando pra trás registrando cada tonalidade diferente de esponjinha, parando pra tentar filmar com a GoPro o movimento delicado das anêmonas e o vai e vém das gorgônias. Nossos dias eram assim, um mergulho de 2h de manhã e outro à tarde. Até meu ouvido tapar. Hunf! Fiquei presa em casa e acabei caindo na besteira de acompanhar o grupo dos velejadores de USVI. Aff! Só má notícia chegando, minha ansiedade aumentando e todo mundo falando da temporada de furacões que, como avisam todos os anos: seria mais ativa do que o normal. Hora de recorrer ao artefato da maioria das quarentenas: dane-se a dieta! Bora cozinhar, fazer pão, fazer torta, beber e lidar com isso como dá! Funcionou! Troquei o snorkel pelas assadeiras e, claro, pra não virar uma jubarte, chamava todos os amigos pra fazer parte das orgias gastronômicas, sempre regadas à muito vinho e cerveja, já que álcool desinfeta! rs
