After being kicked out of Kusadasi, Turkey we anchored off the coast for a quick nap before continuing south to Turkbuku. We had some beautitul sailing (motoring due to our broken rigging) this week as we sailed down the Turkish Coast in the Mugla province meeting a Tortoise who we helped along the way! That was before the Cat 5 Hurricane Irma targeted Virgin Gorda's North Sound with deadly precision in September, 2017. Despite the devastation, the Bitter End's long time owners, the Hokin family, were not deterred and progress is well underway to bring the Bitter End back better than ever. Richard and Lauren Hokin will be joining Peter to reminisce on some of Bitter End's good ol' days as well as looking forward to the plans to reopen as "Bitter End 2.0"

In this episode of the Art of Boat Building I begin fairing the hull. In this 3 step processes we discuss the method of hand planing followed by sanding with a slow speed rotary sander. The last step of long boarding is sanding by hand with a long board. As a part of the tool building series I talk about my criteria for the marine fairing board. Finding a donor tool at Harbor Freight I use the auto body sander to produce an improved tool that will be a flexible sander over the curves of the hull. The islands of Los Roques are known to be a great spot for kite surfing due to their steady winds often around 20+ knots. Our charter guests André and Manu as well as boat owner Micha were totally hooked and had finally talked me into getting on a board myself. It lasted three days...and then the fun was over for me, I hit my foot on the ground and was not able to walk anymore. Since our charter guests still had a full week ahead of them, I decided to wait until we got back to Curacao to see a doctor.
