After diving Mary Island we head back to the mainland of the Russell Islands for more shelter befoe heading for Leru Island to do one of the Solomon Islands iconic dives, a long tunnel into the cliff face. We then move to an overnight mooring further to the east. On our way to drop off our dive guide, Johnny at Yandina we find an enormous length of rope from a F.A.D. floating in the ocean.

After over two months stuck in Saint Martin, we decided that the best course of action for us to escape hurricane season and reconnect with our sanity was too repatriate to Sweden. After being on the hard stand for a month working our butts off, it is hard to believe this day finally came. When we first rolled into the yard with holes and basically no rudder, we knew we had a mammoth task in front of us! After a slow start due to a little bureaucracy, we had only 3 weeks left on our visa to complete the repairs on time and we managed to launch Nandji a day earlier! Completing majority of the repairs our selves, it is a rewarding feeling to get our home back in the ocean and ready to sail once again. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed on our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! In this episode we make our way across central France via the River Marne and it's Canals. we start of in a nice little town called Chateau Thierry and end up in a little place in the Champagne region called Reuil. We have a couple of problems, a tree stuck to our boat and a slipping belt on our trusty Beta engine. Denver gets the diesel tanks ready for filling. We have to set the sensors in place and get them calibrated so he started off by emptying them completely - a pain stakingly slow job. We glad he did it because we found out that they we really dirty which would ultimately affect the engines. The tank lids were also short of the connection points to insert a fuel return line, so again the process was slowed down whilst we found some stainless steel tube and a company to weld those in place before we could fit the fuel return pipe. That done, he created a good gasket finish between the fuel tank and cork gasket below the tank lid. We are now ready to start filling the tanks and calibrating the sensors to give us accurate readings on our displays There are always jobs you finish, stand back and look at and think"damn... that could have been done better!" We peeled the paint and stipple off the wall behind Colben and Teagan’s bed so that Colben could fair the wall before redoing the stipple and paint. WHAT A DIFFERENCE, we looked at it for months wondering if it would be worth all the effort of stripping everything off and redoing it BUT it was so worth it!!!!! Almost all of the imperfections are gone! We painted our headboard and put it in place to see what it looks like and it definitely finishes off the room. We went with the colour Trade Winds because WHY NOT? 🤣 Colben sends the GoPro up on the halyard (because of our lack of a drone) to get a birds eye view of Saoirse while Sally just happened to pop past for a swim. Karen falls between the yacht and the dock, luckily she was able to stop herself from going under by catching herself on the dock but hitting her ribs on the way down. Her ribs are still very sore and it hurts to breathe or laugh so we are wondering if maybe one is broken but we are trying to avoid hospitals at the moment! Karen and Robin are finally able to head into Cape Town to pick up some much needed stuff to finish projects on the yacht! Finally after 80 days of lockdown! Whilst in lockdown in Santa Marta we finally got the time to sit down and reflect on where we are financially and how we can keep our sailing dream alive. We've had many setback which have really eaten into our cruising budget, and although a 2.5 month marina fee was one of them it allowed us to set in motion all the ideas we have, which may allow us to start bringing in an income. Time to get our YouTube Channel up and running: We wanted to start this channel as it’s a great way to document our trip to look back on in the future as well as share our experiences with friends and family and others who we may inspire to do the same and follow their dreams. We never realised how much work goes into video editing and production as well as story planning and construction. To say we have learnt heaps is an understatement! We spent weeks (seriously) learning video editing software, trawling for music, recording voice overs, watching and learning from our favourite channels and generally discussing how we wanted our videos to turn out. Content: We want to show the good, bad and ugly of our journey. Throughout making these videos we’ve been saying “I wish we had recorded the time we got caught in a fishing net”, or “we really should have had the camera running when we were sailing through that massive storm”. These are all instances when your first thoughts are not to grab the camera, for a number or reasons! But they are all part of our story. We don’t want to just show you the beautiful views, and places, we want you to have the full experience, be it fun, scary or frustrating. Equipment: This is another area we have fallen short. When we were budgeting for this trip, camera equipment was at the bottom of our list as “nice to haves” and sadly as many who own boats know, we are still working our way down the “nice to have list”. In fact I can’t guarantee we will ever get there! There is always something that crops up that needs replacing or fixing before we can splash out for “nice to haves”. At the moment our main cameras are our GoPro and iPhones. With equipment comes quality. There are been so many great clips which we have had to discard as the lighting wasn’t quiet right or the sound was terrible. Being on a boat we are almost always in the wind, which creates its own problems when trying to speak into the camera, or trying to edit. Music: We have spent hours trawling for good music. Music really does bring a video to life and gives it a personality. YouTube is so fussy these days that even when you purchase music you need to be 100% sure you can use it on YouTube. We’ve learnt this the hard way and have often completed a video only to have to go back to the drawing board as YouTube didn’t like our music choice! We’ve also noticed that in order to have a choice of good, YouTube acceptable music you need to subscribe to music library sites. Which when you are on a very tight cruising budget like ours is not something we took into consideration. Internet: Living on a boat, comes with many ups, but one of the main downs, besides not being able to take a long soaking bath is the lack and cost of internet. We sometimes feel like we are on a permanent quest for internet connection, whether it’s to transfer money to pay bills or just to find out where our next anchorage will be, internet has become very important no matter where you live. We obviously can’t buy an unlimited, super speedy, hard wired connection plan like you do when you live on land. So we have to rely on pay as you go mobile contracts, or coffee shops with WiFi. Finding a pay as you go SIM contract in a country where you don’t speak the language is sometimes challenging! So we try to upload from cafes, or local SIM cards which sometimes have very little data for rather large price tags. Hopefully someday the mobile phone companies will all realise how difficult it is to travel and get good WiFi and come up with an affordable solution. For now we will keep hunting, and perhaps paying when we can’t find, but we will stay connected to get these videos uploaded. In conclusion, the point of all of this is to assure you we are working really hard to improve. We are very proud of what we have managed to put together in such a short space of time.
