We reluctantly depart the beautiful Papagayo anchorage for the better sheltered and more urban Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. I also need to put into Las Palmas for water and provisions for the long trip back across the Atlantic. The Port Authority, however, has me jump through a few hoops before granting me permission to anchor at Alcanaveras. In this episode we Sail in South Wales - Milford Have to Fishguard, through the notorious waters of Jack Sound and Ramsey sound. We are Andy, Melissa and Jack, a sailing family based in North Wales, looking for a bluewater sailing yacht to take us around the world. Miss Rosie is our Great Dane 28 Sailing Yacht. She is a beautiful full keel, heavy displacement cruising yacht with a transom and keel hung rudder. She has a Volvo Penta MD2B engine. The Great Dane 28 is, despite it's size a fantastic bluewater sailing yacht and many have circumnavigated the globe. Is she the boat that will take us around the world though? Who knows. The situation most skippers dread … being pinned on the dock by high winds. So what do we do? In our case we have a big cat behind us and the wind is blowing a steady 19-20 knots. Take a look to see. We also give a quick look at our failed Sterling Power Products external voltage regulator that literally caught fire. But I have to add that we think it shorted out internally and Sterling Power went to great lengths to get us a new one, even though it was a year out of warranty. And we didn’t even have to use our YouTube channel as leverage. They were very gracious about the whole thing, and were wanting the Island Water World marine chandlery to air ship it back to England for inspection. They said they’d never heard of anything like this in over 5 years of making that particular item. BTW, the replacement version has been going strong ever since without a hitch. Finally, we sail in 30+ knot winds up to Grand Case, on the French side of St Martin. This is the culinary center of the coastline, and it turns out to be a really cool little town. sailing videos, sailing, cruising, monohull, oyster, oyster yachts, sailing blog, sailing vblog, sailing vlog
We did what few recreational sailors do or even attempt to. We circumnavigated the island of Santa Antao. It was an epic six day journey beginning in the town of Tarrafal de Montrigo and ending back there several days later. It gave us time to make a short visit and take a sweet shower under a tumbling stream. And our friend Sidney finally caught fish for an afternoon delight. #circumnavigation #sailing #sailorfriends Some say it’s The Best Sailing Channel on YouTube! It was a potentially dangerous situation that our friend Brian on the boat next to us noticed first and sprung into immediate action. We were working on our electrical system and could smell that it was an electrical type of fire. Worried that it was us we quickly shut everything down on our boat and gave it a full inspection. It was on another boat, but it is a sad story. The owner of the boat had been preparing his yacht for a circumnavigation for five years. He was due to finish and launch this winter. Errant current in an undersized solar panel wire likely caused the fire based on our visual inspection. The good of the story, fellow liveaboard cruisers in the marina saved the day, and likely the boatyard with their quick response. 0:53 Trip Home We ran a few errands in Annapolis before heading home. We had to drop off our mainsail and #4 jib at the sailmaker to have an additional reef installed, reinforcements put on, and cut down the #4 to a storm staysail which would hank on our to-be-installed removable inner forestay. First, we had to return our borrowed jeep to our new friend and fellow Annapolis boater and boatyard neighbor Eric. Thank you!!!!! Then we picked up our rental car to make the 1000 mile road trip back to Toledo Ohio to see family and go to the Chicago Mackinac Awards party. 2:35 Chicago-Mackinac Race Finish A short clip of the finish of the 333 mile long 2019 Chicago to Mackinac Race. In July, we sailed aboard Jim Weyand's 1D35 Turbo sailboat Chico 2, hailing from Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit, MI. Kate was a driver and I was the navigator. For more about our experience on the race, see the link to our blog: https://sweetruca.com/routing-for-the-overall-win-2019-cycrtm/ 4:26 Chicago-Mackinac Trophy We traveled to Chicago to attend the awards party for the race in November at the Chicago Yacht Club. We were very happy to meet up with our friends from the Chico 2 crew and accept the 100+ year old Chicago-Mackinac Trophy along with the rest of the team. There just aren't enough good things to say about Jim and his team of amazing sailors. Official results: https://cycracetomackinac.com/results/details/2019/section 5:38 Mast Removal Our time in Chicago and home with friends was awesome, but now we had to shift modes from vacation and party mode back into boatyard work mode. We were doing some major re-fit work to our monohull sailboat in preparation of further offshore voyaging. First up was removing the carbon fiber mast and rig to install the Dyneema inner forestay. This would allow us to shift between a sloop and cutter rig as needed. It would also centralize the sail plan in big breeze if we were to encounter a storm in the ocean. 9:19 Rudder Removal Next up was removing the rudder. We had decided to replace the rudder bearings. Ours were serviceable as is, but knowing that we plan to put on 25000 miles, we found it prudent to do sooner rather than later. Bert Jabin Yacht Yard in Annapolis would make our work easier as well, rather than trying to do these major projects in a far-flung tropical island. 11:54 Rudder Bearing Replacement Part 1 After we had the rudder out, a major job requiring heavy machinery. It was time to remove the old bearings. They simply had to be pounded out. Before we install the new bearings, we first must change the bearing race on the rudder itself, from composite to stainless steel. This required quite a bit of cutting, grinding, and sanding. It is always nerve-wracking to cut into such expensive parts. #sailingvlog #CYCRTM #sail #sailing #sailinglife #sail #sea #boat #yacht #sailboat #yachting #travel #ocean About Us: So who are we? Well, we aren't Sailing La Vagabonde, Expedition Evans, Sailing Doodles, Sailing Uma, Gone With the Wynns, or Sailing Delos. We don't have a fancy catamaran, but we do have a pretty and fast monohull sailboat. Cruising catamarans like the Fountaine Pajot's, Leopards, and Lagoons can't keep up ;) We are Kate and Curtis, a YouTube sailing couple, with our sailing dog Roxy, aboard SV Sweet Ruca, a J-Boats J/46 monohull. We used to be sailboat racers on the great lakes, and our goal is to cruise around the world via the capes (the wrong way or the hard way). We will see if this will happen or not, as the "new normal" has put quite a damper on our travels. For now, enjoy our videos and join us on our journey via our YouTube Channel. 'Till Next Time :-)

This year my birthday was spent enjoying our last full 24 hours on our boat before we handed her over to the new owner and walked away forever. I could make this post all sad, and talk about how I was kicked out of my home on my birthday....but since I asked for this, I was just as delighted about it as I was sad. But yes, the moment has finally come where we hand Elements off to her new owner. After getting one last little trip in as we headed down the river and into the town of Falmouth, we had one full day left on her before packing up and walking away. And as many emotions as we had running through us at the time, we tried not to let ourselves think about it too hard. Not while we were still there. The good news is, passing her over to her new owner Brice, was so incredibly easy, and it was really nice to have a face to go with the long conversations we'd been having over the previous month. We know we've left Elements in great hands, and it's time for both parties involved to begin their new adventure. Much love from Cornwall! Jessica, Matt & Georgie Thank you SO MUCH to our Patrons. Singlehanded ocean racing is demanding and not for the faint of heart. It is a profession that requires a certain state of mind and a great ability to adapt. “It may not sound like much but being alone changes your state of mind,” says Clarisse Crémer, who is taking part in her first Vendée Globe. In addition to taking on all the roles on board and managing your mind, stress, sleep and the unexpected, you also have to accept that you are not always at 100%,” admits Kévin Escoffier, who is embarking on his first solo circumnavigation after many years as an ocean racing crew member. “If the wind is different from what is expected, you have to deal with it and choose sleep over perfection for a few hours.” Today, ocean racing has become much more competitive than it was in the early days of the regattas. Modern boats are equipped with an impressive technological arsenal that almost forces skippers to hide inside their boat and think about their strategy all the time. In this fourth episode, Loïck Peyron looks back at the history of sailors venturing onto the sea. This week’s special guests include Escoffier, Jean Le Cam, and Vendée Globe rookie Clarisse Crémer, who will soon be departing for the solo, non-stop, and without assistance competitive journey around the world.

Buon vento! For a few days we sailed to Kekova. On board my former colleague Jens and his Turkish wife Şeyma, who is working as a marine biologist. We expected to see some turtles in the sea but the spectacle we got was way more interesting. A huge seal was hunting - and finally eating - a stingray right beside our boat. It's very rare you see the monk seals in the Med because they are threatened with extinction.
I love Starbucks Egg White Bites and wanted to make them from home. But, I didn't want to make them boring, I wanted them to have good flavor, be manly and smoked and still have the things in it that keep it healthy. After a lot of experimenting, I have figured out how to impart good smoke into these egg white bites while still keeping them light and fluffy. Buying a new or used boat is a wonderful experience, and one of the biggest purchases that a person or family can make. David O'Rourke from Approved Boats talks us through the differences between boat sales companies - namely yacht brokers and boat dealers - and what's involved with boat ownership.
A boat that combines speed and comfort of a cruiser. This Cranchi Smeraldo 37 combines a dynamic sailing experience with incredible indoor and outdoor comfort. The exterior design is spacious and outstanding, both fore and aft, living spaces and a dynamic and powerful profile. Its access to the sea is immediate, easy and direct, a stern that marks the entrance of large spaces and comfort, with a cabin full of life to enjoy moments of leisure. It is simple and safe to move to the bow using the walkway that runs the entire perimeter. The bow produces a sensation of power and speed, being at the same time the ideal solarium. The surprising low deck welcomes you with a perfectly designed living room and kitchen to create a large space, a generous bathroom, and at the stern you will discover a bedroom that will be a gift for any guest or family member, the bedroom in the bow leaves nothing pending. imagination is the biggest prize for the owner of this amazing yacht.
