11th Hour Racing Team are applying the pioneering spirit of ocean racing to ocean science with the latest generation of scientific equipment onboard called the OceanPack. In this video, navigator Simon Fisher shows us how during a 14-day transatlantic crossing in August, the team used an OceanPack box to sample seawater 24/7 and transmit essential ocean data in real-time, for the first time. This is part of our innovative and pioneering science programme using onboard instrumentation to gather scientific data in some of the most remote places on earth. The crew aboard the IMOCA 60 racing yacht also deployed a Drifter Buoy in a target area where there is a gap in coverage for long-term real-time monitoring of ocean conditions, a particularly valuable contribution given the reduced opportunities to collect data and deploy monitoring equipment during the COVID19 situation. The Rolex Middle Sea Race always demands the highest standards in sailors of all generations, both professional and Corinthian. This year, the 41st edition, demonstrated profoundly the human endeavour required to succeed. Great resilience was shown by all involved. The organizers, the Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC), worked tirelessly to ensure a safe competition in the context of a global pandemic. The participants exhibited dedication and passion just to make the start line and, then, on the water provided thrilling competition which ended with last year’s overall race winner claiming a monumental back-to-back success. For understandable reasons, the number of entrants for the 2020 Rolex Middle Sea Race fell short of the record-breaking entries of recent editions. The 50 teams from 14 countries, diligently and rigorously prepared for the 606-nautical mile race, and illustrated admirably the values which underpin yachting through a display of fine seamanship in completing the complex challenge set by the course and prevailing weather. At the final prize giving today (Saturday), all crews were honoured and the victors celebrated for their accomplishments. Godwin Zammit, Commodore of the RMYC, expressed his satisfaction that the race had gone ahead, commending the participants, the club and its supporters, including longstanding sponsor Rolex, as well as Transport Malta, the Ministry of Tourism, Yachting Malta and the armed services of Malta and Italy. “This has been a very unusual year; so much has been disrupted and so many racing events have been cancelled. Nevertheless, the Royal Malta Yacht Club was determined that if it was at all possible the Rolex Middle Sea Race would happen even if without the usual hospitality,” he stated. To ringing applause Commodore Zammit congratulated all winners, but particularly Elusive 2: “Winning such an event two years in succession is an outstanding achievement. The RMYC is proud that such a momentous thing has been claimed by one of its own. Well done Elusive!” He went on to express his thanks to the RMYC team of staff and volunteers that had put in such an effort, continuing: “We are fortunate to have a club with suitable facilities, both within the building and on the waterfront, that are so essential to organising an event of this calibre and international reputation. It would be difficult to maintain this level of organisation with anything less.” Dr Ian Borg, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure & Capital Projects, attended the ceremony and gave a short address, acknowledging the event’s importance and standing in Malta. “I’d like to thank the RMYC and all its volunteers and those that have supported this event for holding the 41st edition notwithstanding the challenges,” he said. “A study released recently shows the importance of these events and how they bring in investment and finance. As Minister responsible for the Lands Authority I pledge once again our commitment to continue to support the club.” Overall victory: A rare repeat Winning a 600-mile offshore race once is a massive achievement. So many pieces need to fall into place for it to happen. Returning to conquer the same summit a second time is often even harder. After years of persistence and continual improvement, the crew of Maltese yacht Elusive 2 were emotional winners of last year’s race. Siblings Maya, Aaron and Christoph Podesta had been inspired to take up sailing through the enthusiasm and encouragement of their late father Arthur, a 35-time Rolex Middle Sea Race competitor. This year’s race posed renewed challenges. Preparation required the same methodical manner of previous years, but in complex circumstances. On the water, the conditions presented a contrasting examination to those of 12 months earlier. “This race is about physical endurance and mental toughness,” explained Aaron Podesta. “Last year was a mixture of the two. This year the light weather conditions made it mentally challenging at every corner of the race.” Harnessing their expert knowledge of the racecourse and vast experience sailing together, the team kept moving in the face of a frustrating breeze that never really settled into a pattern. The reward for their unwavering commitment was to set a corrected time which their rivals could not beat. Back to back success is a rare feat in yacht racing of this kind. #RolexMiddleSeaRace

Donna and I took the next step in our sailing training by completing Sail Canada's 5 day liveaboard Basic Cruising Standard course. This course is designed to take people with no experience - like us - and give them the skills they need to sail during the day in familiar near coastal waters. The skills required are broken down into ashore skills (otherwise known as knowledge) and afloat skills (otherwise known as practical abilities) and virtually ALL of them were new to us. But thanks to our patient and capable instructor Gord (check him out at starlightsailing.com) we were successful and are now Sail Canada certified skippers at the Basic Cruising Standard. We completed this course aboard Gord's boat "Starlight", a 32 foot Aloha boat built in Toronto in the 80s. If you're curious about this model you can find more information at https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/aloha-32. She may not be the newest or most luxurious sailboat on the water, but Starlight had everything we needed and by the time we were finished our course we had a definite soft spot for this beautiful boat. Living aboard for five days definitely helped us start to get some ideas of what we want in our own boat when the time comes. The weather was all over the map over the five days, with gale-force wind-driven waves on our first day all the way to warm, sunny, and dead calm conditions on our last. We learned SO much and saw SO much marine wildlife! We were both amazed at how fast the time flew by - and how tired we were by the end of our cruise. Our focus was on learning so we didn't record any of our actual lessons. I am also learning more about what camera equipment I need to record interesting video out on the water. The action camera I have now is fine, but it lacks the image stabilization of newer ones so I've already picked out a replacement for it. I also unfortunately tried using a poor quality ND (neutral density) filter to help with overexposure on it and while the video looked fine on the camera's screen, once I imported it to my computer I could tell that it is yellowish and hazy. I've thrown that ND filter away and will make some other adjustments in the camera to improve exposure. Finally, I've realized that I need something better than my phone to record wildlife video. I haven't quite figured out what will work best for me in that department yet, but I have a few ideas. Just like we're learning how to sail, we are also learning how to tell our story through video. We'd really appreciate any comments you have, whether they are words of praise or constructive criticism. We're SO excited about this new adventure in our lives and we want to share it with you in a way that is meaningful, so we thank you in advance for helping us to do that. Kévin Escoffier is about to leave for the Vendée Globe, the solo, non-stop race around the world considered the "Everest of the Seas." He already has a Jules Verne Trophy and two Volvo Ocean Race campaigns to his credit, including a victorious one in the last edition with Dongfeng Race Team, and he previously headed up Team Banque Populaire’s design office. A technology nut, this French sailor has already been part of the PRB team, playing a role in the construction of Vincent Riou’s Farr design for the Vendée Globe 2006. It’s at the helm of the VPLP/Verdier design launched in 2010 (the last PRB helmed by Vincent Riou), that Kévin will take on this mighty challenge: his first Vendée Globe! We asked Kevin to describe life onboard an IMOCA 60 in one word. The answer? Violent. With a massive sail area, these are the most powerful monohulls on the planet led by a solo skipper.
