I edited together about 3 days of footage of me crafting a new main boom. After spending some time at Liapari Island, we headed back to Gizo to dive the deep walls of the reefs around Kennedy and Naru Islands. We recount the story of PT109 that was hit by a Japanese destroyer and the rescue of its crew and commanding officer John F Kennedy, the future President of the United States.

When researching anchorages we always take safety into account. What are the reviews saying? What are other cruisers who have been there in the past saying? Checking the Caribbean Safety and Security site for recent reports. BUT we also follow our gut. If we find an anchorage with no reviews and feel off we will leave. If we find an anchorage and it has no so favorable reviews, then we make the call depending on the situation. And to be honest, if we let all the bad reviews keep us away from exploring each new place, we would have NEVER left home. What we don’t normally get is the ONE one ONE contact with the locals and business owners that are trying their best to clear their names of the smearing that one or two people with bad intentions have brought upon them. Most of the anchorages in the West Indies rely on the cruising community to bring in income for their businesses. And when one bad apple takes it upon themselves to ruin the whole bunch, it hurts the locals' livelihood and the cruisers who are missing out on a beautiful location full of kind people, great food, amazing conversation and possibly a DONKEY. We are happy we got to meet up with our new friend Curtis that showed us around his island and introduced us to what has become one of our favorite islands in the Caribbean. Follow our friends! 19 octobre, 6 heures trente, le reflet de Black Lion miroite sur l’eau étamée de la baie de Mikindani. La grand-voile est à poste pour au moins trois jours, elle devait l’être pour plus mais l’inconstance des vents, a encouragé mon capitaine à exploiter un nord-est pour poursuivre notre périple. La vie est pourtant douce ici, en Tanzanie mais le temps passe, la fin de notre visa approche et la fenêtre pour l’Afrique du Sud se fait attendre ! L’idée est donc de retourner à Mayotte pour pouvoir attendre l’établissement de la mousson de sud-ouest sans stress de date, en tirer les meilleures conditions et rallier le courant des aiguilles pour la nation arc-en-ciel sans inquiétudes. Dans la précipitation de notre décision, l’imprévu a mis sur notre route un charmant couple français d’une trentaine d’années, équipiers à bord d’un catamaran de voyage. Néophytes tous les deux en navigation, ils viennent de passer plus de trois semaines entre Mayotte et Zanzibar en cohabitation hauturière avec leur capitaine. Excellent exemple pour aborder le délicat sujet du vivre ensemble en bateau. La promiscuité, déjà pas forcement évidente à terre, peut devenir en mer, une vraie galère ! Et n’allez pas croire que cela ne peut pas vous arriver, en moyenne sur l’eau, huit fois sur dix, la situation clashe ! Est-ce le milieu marin, l’espace restreint ou l’intensité des éléments qui contribues aux discordes ? Dans tous les cas, sachez que l’atmosphère des grandes traversées est révélatrice de personnalité. Bien conscients de cette réalité et il faut bien le dire habitués à notre cocon marital, nous nous étions dit que nous ne prendrions jamais personne à notre bord lors de longues navigations ! Mais à l’évidence, il ne faut jamais dire jamais car figurez-vous que nous nous retrouvons à bord de Blacky avec deux bananas abandonnées ! Nous n’allions quand même pas les esquiver et les laisser à un sort de vagabonds d’autant qu’eux aussi retournent à Mayotte. C’est donc avec Anaëlle et Guillaume de leur petit surnom Lalou et Tarzan que nous avons organisé nos deux derniers jours en terre africaine. Avitaillement, clearance de sortie et tampon sur nos passeports ont remplie sans difficulté nos ultimes quarante-huit heures tanzaniennes. Presque trois mois et demi après notre premier ancrage dans ce fabuleux pays, sous entière dépendance de nos envies, nous reprenons le large dans l’unique but vertueux de changement. Le moteur bâbord tourne depuis trois heures, c’était prévus, Tchoupi est venu chercher le vent plus sud, les 10 nœuds annonçaient sont au rendez-vous, le gennak est envoyé, la machine stoppée et nos instincts peuvent s’extérioriser. Comme à son habitude, Cyril a privilégié la sécurité, un point largement développé lors du briefing d’hier soir avec nos invités. Ils savent par exemple que sur Back Lion, il est interdit d’aller faire pipi sur la jupe en navigation ou sortir du carré seul de nuit sans surveillance. Très attentifs à nos attentes et avec une furieuse envie d’apprendre, nos mousses s’adjoignent avec beaucoup de complaisance à notre binôme. Et si l’expérience est formatrice pour eux, elle est tout autant instructrice pour nous. Entre un atelier pêche, créatif de leurres Colgate et une fortuite visite de quelques dauphins, pour notre plus grand plaisir, la matinée passe en un rien de temps et quand par 10º21'090 S et 40º30'394 E, à trois milles de la frontière Tanzanie-Mozambique, la VHF grésille, il est déjà 13 heures 30. De l’autre côté de notre récepteur, c’est Men Skey, le bateau copain victime de nos plaisanteries, dont celle du vol de leur annexe. Ils sont partis quasiment en même temps que nous et à quelques milles sur nos traces, ils viennent de se faire aborder violement par un bateau moteur. Affolé et choqué, Philippe nous a appelé pour nous prévenir ! L’embarcation, qui s’avère militaire, a débarqué deux hommes armés à leur bord et nous poursuit à toute allure avec le reste de l’équipage dans l’angoissant but de nous rattraper. Sans certitude de leurs intentions, le dessein est relativement préoccupant d’autant que le contact radio avec nos amis est en stand-by. La vedette nous talonne de peu, une crainte machinale s’empare de nous quatre. À bord, le stress est à son comble ! Le vent augmente, et juste avant de passer la limite entre les deux pays, Blacky accélère. L’ambiguïté de cette affaire fait déborder notre imagination et quant à un mille de nous, nous voyons nos pourchasseurs faire demi-tour, nous sommes partagés entre notre soulagement et l’inquiétude de savoir Evelyne et Philippe dans une mauvaise posture. Unsere Reise geht weiter an der Küste von Italien. Wir umrunden den "großen Zeh" und segeln durch die Straße von Messina. Mit viel Strömung aber wenig Wind machen wir uns dann nach einem kleinen Halt zum auftanken bei Tropea auf zur Vulkaninsel Stromboli. Ein noch aktiver Vulkan vor der Küste Italiens. Durch eine Nacht mit zu viel Schwell an der Boje, brechen wir dann schon etwas verfrüht zu unserer Überfahrt nach Sardinien auf.
