Wow what a night sail! We left Rota near Cadiz, had some great strong winds and sailed through the night past Trafalgar to Gibraltar. As the sunrose over the beautiful misty mountains we reached the straight of Gibraltar. After exploring Gibraltar and La Linear we picked up some English bits from Morrisons... woowoo for PG Tips tea bags ;-D and a spanish pilot guide as we were all out of maps and books. We had a very busy two days and sailed on to a rolly but lovely peaceful anchorage for the night and a bit of rest before we go on to explore the Costa del Sol.... WE have reached the MED!!! We cook up the worlds wobbliest nachos and sleep to the song of the whales echoing through the hull at the astonishingly beautiful Wathumba Creek. All the while keeping a keen eye out for those pesky dingos, we have been chasing down for weeks now.

Februar 2020 - Französisch Polynesien Unser Segeltörn hoch am Wind von Hao in den Tuamotu nach Gambier. Drei Wochen haben wir auf Hao auf das richtige Wetterfenster gewartet und dann stimmte die Vorhersage trotzdem nicht. Die Folge ist Gemecker wie von den beiden Alten aus der Muppet-Show. Wir, Joachim und Sabine, sind die Crew der Atanga. Wir sind am 01. Juni 2014 in Hamburg gestartet. 2015: Kanarischen Inseln 2016: Kapverdische Inseln, im Februar 2016 unsere Atlantik-Überquerung nach Französisch Guyana. Dann kleine Antillen und noch einmal die Guyanas und Suriname mit der Nereid’s Rally. 2017: ABC-Inseln (nur BC), Mexiko und Belize. In Mexiko haben wir eine dreiwöchige Rundreise im Landesinneren unternommen. Im Anschluss kamen Providencia und Kolumbien Festland (ebenfalls mit einer dreiwöchigen Rundreise) und die San Blas Inseln in Panama. 2018: Wir wurden im Januar in Panama vom Blitz getroffen. Die Reparatur dauerte drei Monate. Nach der Passage durch den Panama Kanal haben wir den Rest des Jahres in Ecuador verbracht und fünf Wochen das Landesinnere erkundet. 2019: Osterinsel, Gambier, Tuamotu und Gesellschaftsinseln. 2020: Die Corona-Krise hat uns in Gambier (Franz. Polynesien) erwischt. Wir werden sehen, wohin der Wind uns treibt und wie weit wir kommen.

Soon I will be sailing solo across the North Pacific, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and I am going to be on the lookout for Nurdles! They sound and look cute, but in fact, they are anything but. As lightweight building blocks for the Plastic product industry, they often get lost in transport. 250,000 tons a year find their way into the world's oceans. I am going to join the Great Hurdle hunt and send my data to, Fidra, an organization in Scotland who is gathering detail about Nurdle concentrations and hot spots. Currently, only California names Hurdles as a pollutant so data will help other governments around the world and companies to do the same. Already through the work of, petrochemical companies are improving their methods of packing and shipping to avoid loss. Hubert Lemonnier, Race Manager Duty Officer, is a key part of the race management team of the Vendée Globe. Hubert's role is very similar to an air traffic controller — except instead of managing planes in the sky, he and his team manage all of the sailors and boats. During the race, Hubert checks in with sailors every day to ensure their safety. In this second Harken interview leading up to the 2020 race, we ask Hubert about first-time Vendée sailors, his daily discussions with skippers, the race start, and the spectacle of the race village (and how it's been impacted by COVID-19).

Jonathan McKee is among the United States' most experienced short- and single-handed ocean sailors, with a Mini Transat and Barcelona World Race to his credit. We traditionally use pitch to seal the seams we've caulked on the ship. However, there is one exception where we don't use pitch to seal the seams, but instead use linseed oil putty. And that's in the hull of the ship. Pitch is our top choice when compared to linseed oil putty, due to it's durability and waterproofness. So, the reason why we use linseed oil putty on the hull is purely aesthetic. If we use pitch, it will be difficult to paint it without black stripes being visible and that is something we don't want.
