Barrett and I take the Javelina out to explore a new (to us) campsite in Anza Borrego State Park. We camp south of the 78, east of Julian. We took Pinyon Wash from the highway and kept going till giant boulders stopped us in our tracks. The end of this wash was the start of Pinyon Canyon, and a great hike up over the hill. We were lucky to have been out during a very full moon and were amazed by the moonlight shining on this cool canyon. We also ride our dual sports through Nolina Wash and hop over the 78 to explore Old Borrego Valley Road. Watch to the end to see me ride the Javelina! EP 164: fishin' in my pyjamas on remote islands After our 700nm journey from St Helena.. we had arrived in Ascension. Luckily for us the island hasn't been closed.. but it required a lot of paperwork to get on. Covid Medical Insurance.. that covered for medical evac. Had to do E Visas (which needed to get approved first) but we managed and we got on land! We were so happy to be on land (land sickness is real guys) We explored the island and got to meed the locals whom invited on instantly to come barbecue with them. We got down to fishing in the mornings...literally in our PJ's. The amount of fish life was abundant. We could live off of fish easily in Ascension. We met up with a guy name Tony who took us for some dives although it was recommended by locals not to because of the sharks... we later on saw why. See ya next week!! La petite ville est vraiment éloignée de tout et a fait sa réputation grâce à la précieuse pierre. D’ailleurs vous la retrouverez sur son écu, ainsi que la langouste et le poisson, ressources économiques principales de cette petite bourgade côtière. Autre élément qui rend cette localité célèbre : le Lüderitz Speed Challenge, un évènement annuel consacré à la navigation de vitesse en windsurf et kitesurf, dernier record enregistré, 53,86 nœuds ! Pas étonnant que nous trouvions le mouillage ventilé ! Le jour est choisi, avec très peu de vent aujourd’hui, nous pouvons espérer pédaler sans trop forcer pour rejoindre à un peu plus de dix kilomètres, Kolmanskop, la ville fantôme ! Elle est de celles qui sont tombées dans l’oubli, de celles qui ont eu leurs heures de gloires et qui, maintenant, sont une trace du passé… Nous sommes en 1908, il fait chaud, très chaud, le désert est rude mais le travail ne se refuse pas, Zacharias retire le sable qui ensevelit rapidement la ligne de chemin de fer en construction. Son chapeau sur la tête, il n’en peut plus, il a soif, avance lentement, mètre par mètre il progresse dans cet environnement où les mirages peuvent vite faire perdre la tête ! Il s’arrête un instant, boit un coup, reprend son souffle quand, une pierre étincelante attire son attention… Il vient de trouver… Un diamant ! La nouvelle de cette découverte se répand tellement vite, qu’en moins de quelques mois, une cité minière voit le jour en plein milieu du désert ! Dès lors et jusqu’en 1920, la ville de Kolmanskop connait un fulgurant essor, comptant jusqu’à 1200 habitants dans ce milieu hostile. Durant cette période de grande prospérité sont construits de superbes bâtisses, un hôpital, un casino, un bowling, un théâtre, un opéra, des commerces… Avec plus de cinq millions de carats en diamants extraient pendant les six premières années d’exploitation, les habitants ont le niveau de richesse le plus élevé au monde ! Mais après les années 30, la population décroit, des gisements de la précieuse viennent d’être découvert sur des plages, plus au sud… Kolmanskop se meurt petit à petit, le désert reprend ses droits… Mais s’il est vrai que l’ensevelissement est certain, il n’en reste pas moins que l’exploitation de diamants continue toujours dans la zone, zone qui s’est étendue à vingt-six mille mètres carrés, en débordant de Lüderitz à Oranjemund et surtout maintenant qui empiète sur l’océan Atlantique où le matériau naturel le plus dur au monde est extrait par d’énormes aspirateurs des mers … Agathe Beach fait partie de ses plages qui ont fait la fortune de certains. À 8 kilomètres du centre-ville, elle doit son nom aux pierres semi-précieuses que l’on pouvait y trouver en abondance. D’ailleurs, selon une légende, il était même possible à l’époque de ramasser les pierres de nuit grâce à la lumière de la lune qui les faisait briller ! N’étant pas des oiseaux nocturnes, nous tentons notre chance de jour, déjà parce qu’entre les falaises et la piste VTT, il faut arriver à trouver notre route et au vu des empreintes au sol, les diurnes animaux n’auraient pas de mal à nous prendre pour des proies ! J’aimerais vous relater notre fabuleuse découverte, vous conter ce 22 février… Imaginez ! L’air salin de l’Atlantique nous enveloppe, devant nous, la grève scintille, des milliards de fragments gisent à même le rivage… C’est beau, dans un soupçon de candeur, nous nous rêvons à croire, mais que cherchons nous vraiment… nous l’avons déjà notre diamant…notre bonheur ! Rien pour nous ne sera aussi beau… Notre bonheur ! Les flamands rose pausent, notre journée s’achève et la vie m’est belle ! Pour enrichir nos connaissances sur la ville de Lüderitz, une visite en sillonnant ses rues pavées ou ensablées s’imposait ! Et pour en avoir une vue panoramique, rien de mieux que les hauteurs de la Felsenkirche, cette église construite en 1912 sur les rochers. S’en suit, la maison voisine, Goerke, un exemple des palais construits lors de la découverte des diamants et pour rassasier notre soif d’inattendu, nous sommes invités à bord du Zeepaard, un catamaran moteur, à aller voir les manchots de l’île d’Halifax…

Leon Sefton is no stranger to professional sailing and the America’s Cup, however he is lesser known than the sailors or design teams. Joining North Sails in 1988, Burns Fallow is the lead sail designer for Emirates Team New Zealand and has been at the forefront of sail design for the Kiwi team ever since. He’s seen it all from hoisting sails mid-race in the IACC boats to hard wing sails on 72’ cats; for the 36th America’s Cup, Fallow was one of the central figures in bringing to life the twin skin mainsail concept. “For a sail designer, being involved with the America’s Cup is a dream come true,” said Marco Capitani, one of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli’s sail designers.
