Seuls, nous nous consolons de la péripétie de ce matin, en voulant croire que nous sommes le premier bateau à faire escale près de cette côte. 50 La récompense est là, un mal pour un bien ! Immobiles, insolites, des dizaines de pirogues ont encerclé le bateau. Grands-parents et en- fants attendent sur le rivage de Maliaba. Nous savons que ce moment est unique, il est juste à nous. Jonathan ne voit pas l’événement de la même manière, la sollicitude qui nous est portée l’embarrasse. Les jeunes l’encerclent comme une bête curieuse. Le village tout entier se presse à nos côtés. La parole est donnée à notre avis au détenteur de l’autorité. Sans broncher, nous écoutons, même si nous ne com- prenons absolument rien. Le pas est donné, mêlés à l’assemblée, nous avançons, on ne sait vers où mais nous y allons. L’intrigue est prenante, nous nous sentons figurants d’un reportage sur une chaîne documentaire. Nous avons rejoint le centre d’une grande place. Tout autour, des cases pittoresques montées sur de frêles pilotis nous indi- quent clairement que le progrès n’a pas encore contaminé ces terres d’un autre temps. La scène est désopilante ! Assis tous les trois sur une grande table, en plein milieu de l’espace de vie des autochtones qui nous accueillent, nous nous demandons à quelle sauce nous al- lons être mangés ! Il ne faut pas oublier qu’il y a encore peu d’années, le cannibalisme était une pratique courante en Papouasie. Les dents maculées de la teinte émise par la noix de bétel, nos hôtes pourraient avoir des airs d’anthropophages. Ne soyons pas suspi- cieux, la préparation masticatoire est certes peu engageante mais la population n’a rien de menaçant. Elle ne tarde pas à nous en apporter la preuve. À tour de rôle, chacun s’empresse de défiler devant nous les mains pleines de fruits et de légumes. Highlights of what happened globally in the sport of Sailing in the last 7 days. Please look to Subscribe, Like and Share. We Start with the scariest footage we have seen in our 13 years at the World on Water. Featured on Sailing Illustrated last week, it clearly shows how close it was to being a life ending moment for the skipper of a yacht on the starting line, as the starting alert device was pointed along the line at the boats, not in the air away from the action. We can report that the skipper is OK. The Chicago to Mackinac freshwater race was on last week and over 240 boats started. The First to finish just before midnight Chicago time, on Sunday July 18, was Eagle One, with Timothy LaRiviere of Grosse Pointe Michigan, at the helm. In the Transpac the finish was a close one with Roy Disney's Volvo 70 Pie-wacket, cresting the line first after roaring past the whole fleet. They set a new daily distance record of 506.4 miles, at an average of 21.1 knots of speed in the process. The Class 40 division in the coming Rolex Fastnet Race has seen a big increase in starters. The race starts on Sunday the 8th of August and this year it finishes in Cherbourg France. It's Olympics time again and UK Sailing's Ian Walker is in Tokyo and after his report we have World Sailing's class standings in the sailing action on Days One to Four. Last week we saw British Round The World Solo Sailor Pip Hare install the foils on her new Medallia sponsored, IMOCA 60 yacht, and this week she launches it, and steps its mast. To finish this week's show we have Day 5 of the Aegean RODOS Cup, where on the last racing day, the weather was a tailwind and not very strong. Overall In the IMS category the first place went to Favorit Plus, Second was MARIA ELECTRA, and third BLUE SHARK.

During our search for the next cruising sailboat, there have been only a few that have gotten Tambi really excited. The Kadey Krogen 38 is one of those boats. The size, layout, storage, galley and staterooms are all things that are highly important to Tambi. Me on the other hand, I'm more concerned about rigging, steering, structural integrity, mechanical & electrical systems. The Kadey Krogen 38 seems to deliver on most of these important aspects. One way that the Kadey Krogen 38 falls short is that they all seem to have one particular achilles heel - they leak like sieves! This is evident by the rotten wood beneath port-lights, inside cabinetry, and inside the wooden knees that engage with the chainplates. So do the advantages of the Kadey Krogen 38 outweigh the drawbacks? I know Tambi really loves the layout, storage, and cabins. A huge component of successful long-term cruising is owning a boat that makes the woman happy. Based on that fact alone I think this sailboat could be a solid contender for our future boat. All Systems are GO! We took Aqualibrium out for the first cruise of 2021. After a couple of years (thanks to COVID) our daughter visited from Alberta, so we were thrilled to see her and host her on board!! At first the intention was just to test out the engines, make a stop for a pump out and a top up of fuel, and then just explore the 1000 Islands a bit and scout out a few spots we hadn't been to before. Well, that turned into an impromptu stop at Endymion Island, where there was free dock space! After a couple of friends of ours showed up in their boats, and after a quick tally of our supplies, we decided to stay the night! - Food? Plenty! - Drink? More than enough! - Fresh Water? We didn't really have enough, but our friends loaned us 4 liters to get us through the day (and coffee the next morning!) - Batteries? That was the big question. I was running with two G31 batteries (which I had isolated), and we didn't know how long one would last...however, we had a number of battery-powered lanterns and flashlights and fans, so we minimized our use of the 12V system. Endymion has a number of snakes, and Chloe had absolutely no idea what to make of those wiggley, slithery things! She could smell them, she saw and followed them, but her Schnoodle-brain couldn't process what they were. I would have filmed the encounters, but was laughing too hard! So, a quiet evening with friends. A swim or two around the dock. A lovely dinner and drinks. And then sleep. The next morning was odd because the smoke from forest fires in Northern Ontario gave the sun a red colour. There was fog as well. I was up very early and managed to find every spider web from the dock to the park toilet. With my face. It was a bit creepy. After breakfast, and a chance for Jacqueline to try out an inflatable kayak, it was time to go back to the marina, and then home. What fun!! I will say that the National Parks are lovely, well-cared-for, and worth paying to stay at. The 1000 Islands are an absolute treasure!
