David Hows shares an update on his 72-foot expedition yacht project - Silver Fern, with details of the last 6-months including the Americas Cup, the 10-month certification process with Maritime New Zealand, big budget blow-outs on the refit. David dives into some of his early sailing adventure challenges on Silver Fern including; a forced lee shore anchorage in a heavy weather, being grounded for 10-hours on the mud in crocodile country, black water pipe problems and rigging and steering failures. David shares his thoughts on lessons learned in these examples and prioritisation and decision making at sea. After 2 years of development and testing the Lago 26 F is back on one of the most beautiful lakes of Austria: the lake Attersee. While waiting for one last boat part to arrive, we decide to do a little trip to Old San Juan. We visit two well known forts, Castillo de San Cristobal and Castillo San Felipe del Moro and spend the rest of the time wandering around the historical city. The next day we hike the muddiest trail ever, El Toro in the El Yunque National Forest. On our way home from San Juan we stop to do a large provisioning run before heading back to the boat. Once we receive the final boat part we need, we cast off the lines and leave the marina........... Brooke - "Where are we going?" Gary - "I don't know but we're not staying at this dock anymore!" Days like this make me wonder... Will I pinch myself and wake up from a dream? Powering through the seas 150 NM offshore we experience one of those days we wish would never end. We decide the conditions are ideal for some mid-ocean spinnaker action. We drag the huge sail out of the bow locker, drop the genoa, and set ourselves up for some amazing downwind sailing. Just as we think the day can’t get any better we get visited by a playful pod of dolphins that spend hours frolicking in our bow wake. Baby Nugs goes nuts and does a happy dance to celebrate! As night sets in we drop the kite and set sail for building conditions, which turns out to be a good plan as overnight the wind builds to 20 knots. We find ourselves powering through the seas with an incredibly comfortable motion and Taylor decides to try her Night hand steering skills in the building swells. By morning we find ourselves about 20 NM from Mexico and getting absolutely hammered by the current, but Delos is built for these conditions and powers through to the other side of the Gulf Stream. We were excited to do a wireless, full-HD live broadcast around the boat this morning. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. The Tobago keys of St. Vincent offer stunning, clear water for snorkeling in a remote location ideal for getting away to relax. We sailed from St. Lucia to St. Vincent, then on to the Tobago Cays after checking in. It is still complicated to travel between countries, but with vaccination and PCR test, travel to St Vincent is now possible without quarantine and endless tests during quarantine. What the opening day of the 44Cup in Cowes lacked in sunshine it more than made up for with close racing. The morning had started with just 8-10 knots of breeze and flat seas but, as the day played out a series of subtle changes took place that kept everyone from trimmers to tacticians on their toes. The two most notable factors involved the breeze building to a peak of around 15 knots and the tide turning in the middle of the day. Both helped to deliver some very close racing and revealed one team in particular that was clearly in the groove.

Tom Kneen’s JPK 11.80 Sunrise has sewn up IRC Two in this 49th Rolex Fastnet Race. The Devonshire team crossed the Cherbourg finish line at 1004 BST this morning. Sunrise’s corrected time of 4 days, 6 hours, 45 minutes 4 seconds has given Kneen IRC Two victory by a huge margin. As Sunrise finished, her closest rival was just past the Lizard with more than 120 nautical miles still to sail. After a hideous outbound beat down the Channel, when they never seemed to be in phase with the tide, Sunrise’s first break came after making the last minute call to go up the eastern side of the traffic separation scheme at Land’s End with Il Corvo as the majority of the frontrunners chose to go up the TSS’s west side. Rounding the Fastnet Rock on Tuesday mid-evening, Sunrise already had pulled out a 1 hour 12 minute lead under corrected time. But the key moment of her race came as, while she was forging past the Lizard, the wind utterly switched off for those astern as an area of high pressure rolled over them. “There was a big ridge chasing us at 10 knots, so we just had to go faster than 10 knots the whole way down there,” explained Dave Swete, Sunrise’s sole pro sailor. “It never caught us, but it caught the rest of the guys which I think went down to our fighting hard at the start and when we were fighting current for the first half of the race.” A jubilant Kneen shared his take on this: “The key moment was at the Scilly Isles when we were trying to hold on to the original wind to get us safely into the Channel. All of our weather routing said we’d be stuck in the light pressure, and we had chosen the sails that we believed we needed to deal with that.” From there, the crew kept their fingers crossed, while looking over their shoulders. As they arrived in Cherbourg having straight-lined it from the Scilly Isles, their competitors were still on a very different part of the chart. “We feel very fortunate to have made it here, arriving at a good time for the strong tides just before the finish,” said Kneen. “But there really was no relaxing until we actually crossed the finish line. Nothing is ever certain in this game.” #RolexFastnetRace

Highlights of what happened globally in the sport of Sailing in the last 7 days. For more Sailing News Subscribe, Like and hit Bell for Updates. It's been a big week with the bi-annual ROLEX Fastnet Race starting last Sunday from Cowes on the Isle Of Wight, and tracking around the Fastnet Rock off the coast of Ireland, and this time finishing in Cherbourg in France. Over 330 boats started into big head winds, and an angry tide in the Soulent. One of the highlights was the first outing for the big Russian owned, Club Swan 1 2 5, SKORPIOS which is 140 Feet overall. The French went south of the T S S, while the locals stayed close to the English Coast. Skorpios and George David's' Rambler 88, had a close tussle until after the first night when the seas calmed, and they sailed clear of the coast.
