Pour traverser les océans en #voilier, la navigation se fait en vent arrière. C'est moins éprouvant pour le bateau et pour l'équipage sauf pour le roulis. Les vagues arrivent de l'arrière et font incliner le bateau de droite à gauche en permanence. Et ce n'est pas du goût de tout le monde. Pour naviguer en vent arrière, comme nous n'avons que deux voiles: génois et grand-voile, nous utilisons le tangon pour bien ouvrir le génois. Cette traversée de l'île de St. Lucie vers l'île de Curaçao se passe plutôt bien. Il a fallu tout de même attendre deux semaines pour avoir du vent. Et devinez quoi ? On découvrir les Iles de Gozo, Comino et Malte. Des cailloux secs sans arbres mais La Vallette est un endroit où la vie fuse à toute vitesse, de la vie et mille endroits différents à découvrir. Ugo rejoind Margot en Sicile pour se retrouver deux semaines. On continue à naviguer avec Clément dans les eaux Maltaises, puis on engage la traversée vers la Sicile pour aller chercher Ugo que nous retrouverons à Syracuse. On pense partir vers Crotone mais un problème moteur nous fait faire demi-tour 3 heures après le départ. On reste bloqués 2semaines là bas en attendant les pièces pour réparer ça. Our friends David and George have never sailed through the Menai Straits so we decide to all go on Yacht Aquila. Just to make this fearsome passage more challenging we go trough and back in the same tide, the timing is everything. After a short rest we continue our journey south to Fishguard in south Wales. We have some lovely sails with bright sunshine and dolphins and some horrible sails in thick fog with no radar. The latter was a bit testing but we are here to share the tale with you. We have the opportunity to fly our cruising chute which is always a thrill and we meet up with our friends Rob and Jen on yacht Volupia. All three boats decide to set sail in company through the notorious Jack and Ramsey sounds. This week we reach Makemo atoll and sail to the middle of the island with our buddy boats from New Zealand and Italy. I’m at the helm and Kieran points out why we are so alert when sailing inside the atoll. Upon arriving to another stunning anchorage (we feel so spoiled now) we are greeted by three new friends. Three huge manta rays welcome us as we pulled in to the new spot. They came so close, we could not believe our eyes. Kieran flies the drown and gets even closer to the magnificent creatures (a must see). As the afternoon rolls on the convoy decided to have a drink on the beach. In this episode, we start where we left off… the end of day two of our 500 nautical mile test sail of the Kraken 50, in the middle of the Sea of Marmara. In true Mediterranean sailing style, the wind drops out… shortly followed by gusts! We get walloped with 30 knots of wind coming into anchor… very unexpected especially when we were wrapping up for the day! The next day we hoist the sails early again and much to Adams delight, he gets asked if he wants to drive the boat! Not only is this his dream come true but he then hits the highest speed record of the trip thus far at 12 knots… he is however racing himself. We have a fantastic morning of sailing and notice a few quirks of the Kraken that is quite unique compared to other boats! HOW CRAZY IS THIS? After 3 years of crossing paths we finally met at Sandy Island! This is the story of an incredible journey of two solo sailors almost meeting up several times during the last 3 years. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted.
