There are now forest fires (10:35 ) all around us with holidaymakers even being evacuated by boats. The air is full of the acrid taste of smoke so we sail away and try our best to stay away from them. The wind is fanning the flames and our dinghy becomes one of the casualties ( 04:32 ) when a random gust flips it over and tears out the tow hook! Actually, the real question is `When to go?` My margin for getting to Amami Oshima ( an Island towards Okinawa from mainland Kyushu) is evaporating. The local experienced sailors are advising me not to attempt the passage this week due to the weather. I may be able to I can inch my way forward over the next 48 hours and then wait it out. Buenos días! In this video we’re joined by our friend Liam and we start off by sailing from Ibiza to Formentera. We get spoiled by some fantastic sunsets, and we drop the hook in the beautiful Cala Saona where the water is crystal clear. We take the dinghy and paddle boards to go and find some hidden caves we’d heard about and spend the afternoon swimming and jumping through the caves. Just need to dodge the jellyfish though. We say bye to Liam and make our way North, cruising along the atmospheric coastline in some bad weather. We arrive in a bay called Cala Benirras and go on an exploratory hike. En este caso al ser un stay volante (de quita y pon) la vela a montar debe tener garruchos para poder unirla al estay que en este caso es de acero. Últimamente he visto varios stay volante de dyneema y quedan perfectos. La calidad y resistencia de los cabos en los últimos años ha mejorado muchísimo, pudiendo equipararse a los cables de acero inoxidable. El stay volante va enganchado a un cadenote fijo de inox, que se encuentra a popa del poza de anclas, hasta tope de palo o mástil. Se deben usar dos cadenotes, uno para el stay volante y otro para triqueta o el foque que usemos para navegación con mal tiempo (en este caso la vela de tormenta). El cadenote para la vela en este caso será un cadenote articulado, que a mi parecer es mas cómodo pues queda acostado cuando no lo usas y así evitas darle un golpe con los pies (que no es nada agradable jajaja) Es muy aconsejable que usemos la vela mayor rizada al máximo cuando izamos la triqueta. Aportará más estabilidad, potencia y velocidad al barco si las usamos conjuntamente. Espero que este vídeo te ayude a ganar confianza y seguridad cuando tengas una navegación con mal tiempo o al menos hayas aprendido que existen velas para navegar con temporales. We wanted to try JB Water Weld to repair a busted pipe on our irrigation system. Due to the location of the repair, it would require extensive digging and connections. It should be easier to use JB Water Weld since it should just form a tight seal around the PVC while still creating a watertight seal. Let's go over the 3 times I screwed up before I got it right and fixed the PVC pipe. J-B Water Weld Epoxy Putty Stick - 2 oz - https://amzn.to/3pdfuE3 It was a complete failure in the first attempt! Before applying it to the pipe, I didn't knead it to an off white, sort of grey color. This failed so quickly, it filled the hole I dug with water before I got back to it. After the hole was dry, the JB Water Weld was soft enough to be peeled off by hand. After attempt number one, I learned a lot. You should moisten your hands as you work the JB Water Weld because it becomes sticky. The water weld did not stick to my hands and I was able to work much easier. The only problem I had this time was that I didn't have enough product. I used most of this on my first attempt to fix the pipe and plug some holes in our boat. I had to purchase more JB Water Weld after wasting all the product learning how to use it. Three times a charm, it seems. Everything worked! My wife was thrilled to see the irrigation system working. After almost three months of day trips along the Spanish and Portuguese coast, we prepare again for a longer passage: sailing four days and nights to Porto Santo and Madeira. We start relaxed: light winds, long waves and dolphins playing with Zeezot (and Anne’s feet!). But in the first night the wind increases, the waves become higher and things are starting to get more uncomfortable. In the second night a loud beep from the motor induces total silence; the engine dies completely and therefore we have no electricity anymore. With winds up to 30 knots, waves up to three meter and sometimes confused seas, the sailing varies from awesome to challenging. As we approach Porto Santo in the morning of the fifth day, we are happy and nervous at the same time. Approaching a new place without a working engine (and after four nights of hardly any sleep) is not something we look forward to. Watch us sail into the anchor bay under full sails!

We are still in Rote and loving discovering the culture and the different communities here. A small but very vibrant sailing group has started to arise over the last couple of years. This is because of Bruce, as he builds these little sailing tri-marans. There are 3-4 races per year with individual honours and an overall winner of the Triple Klown cup. This series is very informal and more of a social occasion but the racing itself is taken quite seriously. I was lucky enough to be at Bruces boatshed one windy day and Vice Kommadoor Andy took me out for a blast around the lagoon on his boat. Wet and wild!
