On 19 November 2020, we did something crazy. We moved onto a Leopard 44 and we had no idea how to sail! Over the past year, we have experienced a very steep learning curve. It's been the most difficult and rewarding year of our lives. And, we are so thankful to pass this milestone with the boat still floating and in great condition. We have learned so much in a year - so much about the boat, but also ourselves and how we handle stressful situations, how to work together to complete projects, how to slow down and enjoy nature. In this episode we have arrived in Fiji and begin to explore Savusavu on the island of Vanua Levu. After stretching our legs on a fun hike, we snorkel split rock and set sail for the Yasawa Islands, stopping at Nabouwalu Jetty for a quick dive and overnight anchorage. Conditions off Lanzarote’s moon scape south coast took on a different character for day two of the 44Cup Calero Marinas Lanzarote, with much improved sailing conditions albeit with the 8-12 knot wind blowing either along or off the shore. For most, the day was one of mixed fortunes, none more so than Pavel Kuznetsov’s Atom Tavatuy on which Evgeny Neugodnikov calls tactics. In today’s first race the Russian team nailed the right, Lanzarote side of the first beat, which proved a winning move. The Russian team went on also to claim today’s third race, but punctuated their otherwise excellent day with seventh and eighth placed finishes.

Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. Bereits 2018 starteten wir Richtung Wien, doch ein Motorschaden in der Straße von Messina zwang uns, den Überstellungstörn abzubrechen. Am vierten September kamen wir in Wien an, 980 Seemeilen und 2120 km über die europäischen Wasserstraßen lagen hinter uns. Seitdem liegt Squib in der Wiener Kuchelau, der Refit hat bereits begonnen. Really this was my 2nd sail. I went the week before but I lost all my footage as I lost my old GoPro whilst capsizing about 8 times! True to form, there was absolutely no wind today so I decided to tinker with the boat a bit and then put the electric outboard on and learn how the boat feels. It ended up a really great day because it taught me a lot about how the Mirror Dinghy moves and handles. I definitely ended the day with my brain understanding all the twitches, pitching and rolling a lot better.
