This week we explore the south west side of Tahiti, snorkeling and surfing in Teahupo'o, Kieran’s dream comes true. Teahupo'o is one of the heaviest waves in the world, Kieran has watched pro surfers here since he was a child. The swell was not really here the particular day we arrived so we did a drift dive with our mate Devon from SV Pura Vida instead. An eel scares Kieran as he dives down to swim through a cave in the middle of the reef. I see so many different kinds of fish all in different colours, what a beautiful world we do live in. Kieran catches a few waves at a pass a bit south of the world famous break as I enjoyed the stunning views around. The following day we head into the town of Taravao, in search of a good Wifi and some fresh herbs and greens. After a few weeks of waiting, we finally found a good weather window to sail to Madeira. In preparation we went out for a shake out sail and to clean the hull however with strong winds approaching, getting back to the dock and typing up was a lot more challenging that we anticipated! The next day and with the weather behind us, we decided to head off. We donned our new life jackets and outlined some rules of when we'd like to wear the vests that we thing are pretty reasonable! During the passage I recorded a very ominous VHF call of a fisherman reporting to the Coast Guard that he had just seen a plane lose its wing and spiral down into the sea. Wow another lockdown! I know you guys understand how frustrating that is for everyone! Well it was for us too, we travelled to England spent time with family and friends over Christmas got some little jobs done for the boat and some new bits to take back including a decent sander 😉 you'll see that in action next episode! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. Over four of the most difficult days of racing in 44Cup history, an impressive seven races were still held at the 44Cup Calero Marinas Lanzarote frequently in 5-6 knots wind, conditions, frankly, in which most other yachts would have been unable to race. The schedule for the final day of racing, off the blackened alien landscape of Lanzarote’s south coast, was brought forward by two hours to 1000 UTC. PRO María Torrijo had made this call in order to provide the best window of opportunity to race given the forecast of a fourth day of light winds in this usually windy venue.

This week a shallow depression centred due west of Gibraltar has effectively shut down the famous trades, which typically provide 20+ knot winds at this time of year in the Canary Islands, making it world renowned as a water sports mecca. With a light-to-no wind forecast for the penultimate day of the 44Cup Calero Marinas Lanzarote, the weather gods did tentatively oblige and after more than an hour’s wait ashore, a race did get going but was abandoned when the wind dropped away. While the forecast didn’t look hopeful, the nine RC44 teams were patient and the race committee persevered and eventually were rewarded with one successful race when the wind filled in to 6-7 knots. In this it was the immaculate Team Aleph that led around the top mark. But Nico Poons’ Charisma took the lead on the first downwind and then defended well to gain the Dutchman’s team its first bullet of the regatta. “It felt good,” said Nico Poons once returned to Puerto Calero. “We had some bad ones, so we needed that.”

Arrivée aux Açores à Horta après 3000 milles et 21 jours de mer. On passe les tests Covid avec succès et on demande une place à quai pour le bateau pour entreprendre une remise au clair : grand nettoyage et petites réparations. Tout d'abord, des montagnes de linge à laver et nettoyage complet de l'extérieur du bateau, puis entre autre, révision du vit de mulet, montée au mât, nettoyage des stores à l'eau de javel qui s'avérera être le plus efficace (mais pourtant interdite à bord par le capitaine à cause de la coque en aluminium du bateau), consolidation de la housse de l'annexe,... et c'est en rangeant les placards et les coffres que l'on s'aperçoit que l'on a des parasites qui se sont développés et ce malgré toutes les précautions que l'on prend. Ce sont des mites alimentaires qui se trouvaient dans un paquet de céréales acheté aux Bahamas..... On prend également le temps de découvrir la jolie ville de Horta à Faial et de se faire quelques petits plaisirs (bars, restos, concert...)

So far we have sailed our 37 foot sailboat from Brighton to Gosport, Gosport to Beaulieu, Beaulieu to Limington, Lymington to Cowes and now Cowes to Chichester! We have had some incredible experiences so far and have really tested our sailing abilities! We had our first night sleeping on anchor! We definitely tested ourselves on this last leg.... we were against wind and tide and well lets just say, it took us 14 hours to sail from Chichester to Brighton! Wir sind diese Woche von Porto Santo nach Madeira aufgebrochen (30sm), um uns die nächste Zeit diese wunderschöne Insel anzusehen. Bei anderen Seglern fiel die Entscheidung gegen Madeira, da uns hier längere Zeit Südwind bevorsteht. Davon wollten wir uns aber nicht stressen lassen und direkt auf die Kanaren segeln. Wir denken, dass wir Ende November weiterziehen können und bis dahin schauen wir uns hier auf Madeira um. Hier gibt es unfassbar tolle Orte und Strecken zu erkunden. Davor stehen aber noch kleinere Reparaturen an. Erstmal kümmern wir uns aber um unsere Manatee. Was wir machen seht ihr in diesem Video. Endlich, offene Grenzen! Wir können es kaum erwarten und segeln nach St. Vincent. Das segeln in der Karibik läuft, bis auf den Motorausfall kurz vor dem Ziel, problemlos. Ohne Motor wird das ganze noch zu einem Segelabenteuer und wir müssen die letzten Meilen am Wind kreuzen. Am Ziel stellt sich heraus das unser Impeller kaputt ist! Das tauschen des Impellers ist kein großes Ding. Blöder ist hingegen das wir unseren Termin für den PCR-Test verpasst haben, aber wir machen das beste daraus und am Ende hat sich das warten echt gelohnt. Wir machen einen kurzen Ausflug zur Blue Lagoon und nach Kingstown. Endlich an einen neuen Ort reisen, es ist traumhaft! Wir wünschen euch viel Spaß bei unserem Abenteuer Karibik.
